UNLV has fired football coach Mike Sanford after five losing seasons, a 15-43 record and no bowl appearances. Sanford's firing comes after a 45-17 loss to Air Force on Saturday made the Rebels ineligible for a bowl game. Having a bye week before the final game of the season is usually not a good thing for a team that is no longer in the hunt for a bowl game.
However, after learning that head coach Mike Sanford had been fired hours after a 45-17 loss at Air Force on Nov. 14, the week off couldn't have come at a better time for the Rebels (4-7, 2-5).
Sanford, just 15-43 in his five seasons at UNLV, has agreed to stick around and coach the team's Senior Night game against San Diego State on Nov. 28.
