Miami used to take victories over Duke for granted. Now the Hurricanes look at them as milestones.

The day after the Hurricanes put away a 34-16 win over the Blue Devils with a 21-point fourth quarter, coach Randy Shannon talked about the significance of his team reaching the eight-win level. Five of the wins are in ACC play, Miami's top total in league play since 2005, when it was 6-2.

"It was big for us," said Shannon, whose Hurricanes were a combined 6-10 in conference play over the previous two seasons. "Finishing 5-3 in the conference is better than we have done in a long time."

The clinching outburst, which featured a 73-yard touchdown return of an interception by linebacker Darryl Sharpton that capped the scoring, made the win over Duke look a little easier ...More
