Coming off its best season in more than a half-century, Cincinnati entered spring practice looking to retool rather than rebuild. With a load of talent returning on both sides of the ball, the Bearcats' focus has been on the search for a starting quarterback.
Ben Mauk, who passed for 3,121 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, is awaiting word from the NCAA on his latest appeal for another season of eligibility. If Mauk is denied, head coach Brian Kelly has indicated that senior Dustin Grutza likely will be the starter, but not without competition.
Grutza, the Bearcats' starting QB in 2005 and '06, will be challenged by Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones. Junior Tony Pike, and redshirt freshmen Zach Collaros and Chazz Anderson are in the mix as well. "If Ben Mauk ...More |
