No. 21 Wisconsin beats Michigan 45-24

Preview | Box Score | Recap

MADISON, Wis. (AP)—For long-suffering conference rivals looking to throw some grief back at the once-dominant Michigan Wolverines, now’s the time.

Have at it, Badgers.

No. 21 Wisconsin became the latest Big Ten team to get the best of the reeling Wolverines and coach Rich Rodriguez, winning 45-24 Saturday behind four touchdown passes and a TD sneak from quarterback Scott Tolzien.

“Scotty had a big grin on his face walking off the field,” Badgers coach Bret Bielema said. “To beat Michigan is a big deal.”

It was sweet redemption on Senior Day for the Badgers (8-2, 5-2), who watched last year’s promising season unravel after blowing a big lead in the Big House last year. Wisconsin has regained momentum in what is shaping up to be a better-than-expected 2009 campaign, winning three straight after consecutive losses to Ohio State and Iowa.

It was the sixth straight conference setback for the Wolverines (5-6, 1-6), whose miserable Big Ten season just keeps getting worse—and with a potential bowl bid slipping away, Ohio State awaits next Saturday.

“There’s no question we’ve got one more chance,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve asked the team to be extra focused. We’ve been focused all year, but this is the biggest game of the year. Our guys know that.”

Wisconsin’s 45 points were the most the Badgers have ever scored against Michigan.

After the Badgers blew a 19-point lead in a loss to Michigan last year, Badgers defensive end O’Brien Schofield said he wasn’t comfortable celebrating the win until the clock hit zero.

“I didn’t want to think about that,” Schofield said. “Because last year, I was like, ‘We are killing these guys, these guys are terrible.’ … That was bad. I had to eat my words.”

Tolzien was 16 of 24 for 240 yards with an interception despite spending much of the game under pressure from defensive end Brandon Graham, who had a pair of sacks and forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown to give the Wolverines a 17-14 lead just before halftime.

But this time, the second-half letdown that has become this Michigan team’s dubious trademark actually began just before halftime, when it allowed the Badgers to drive for a 1-yard touchdown by John Clay.

“We’ve got to stay focused on what we need to do,” Graham said. “Most of the games we were out of our gaps and let big plays happen. It’s been killing us.”

Nick Toon caught two of Tolzien’s touchdown throws for the Badgers, who went to the air early on after putting together monster rushing performances in their previous two games.

Leading 21-17, Wisconsin received the second-half kickoff and marched to the Michigan 15-yard line, where Tolzien threw toward Toon in the end zone. Toon, son of former Badgers and NFL receiver Al Toon, jumped and came down with his second TD of the day despite being interfered with on the play.

Tate Forcier was a solid 20 of 26 for 188 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, but it wasn’t enough. After a 4-0 start to the season, the Wolverines are reeling heading into their biggest rivalry.

“If I have to spend 10 hours this week watching film, I’m going to do that,” Forcier said. “We’re going to get the seniors to a bowl game. We’re going to come out and do what we need to do to beat Ohio State.”

Forcier kept Michigan in the game after Toon’s acrobatic touchdown catch, converting a fourth-and-9 play to set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree that cut Wisconsin’s lead to 28-24 midway through the third.

But the Wolverines defense just couldn’t get the stop it needed.

With Wisconsin facing third-and-7 at the Michigan 19, linebacker Stevie Brown burst through the line and Tolzien got rid of the ball just before taking a crunching hit, delivering a 12-yard pass to tight end Garrett Graham to set up first-and-goal at the 7. Tolzien threw a touchdown to tight end Lance Kendricks two plays later, putting Wisconsin up 35-24.

The Badgers were coming off impressive rushing performances in victories over Purdue and Indiana but had a hard time finding yards on the ground against Michigan’s defense early on. Michigan held Wisconsin to 53 yards rushing in the first half but couldn’t keep it up, as John Clay got 109 of his 151 yards on the ground after halftime.

“Defensively, we are reaching to find an answer to stop people,” Rodriguez said.

WHAT? Wisconsin tied OSU in 1999? Something's not right. They DID finish with two losses (Thanks a LOT, Cincinnati and Michigan)

The 1999 Wisconsin Badgers blasted OSU in Columbus, handing the Buckeyes possibly their worst ever loss, 42-17, scoring 42 unanswered points. The Badgers ran the table, Michigan fell flat on its face after an ugly win in Camp Randall, but pushed Wisconsin into the Big Ten Title with a win over Penn State. Penn State lost out after going 9-0, Wisconsin won out after a 2-2 start, and OSU fell out, finishing 6-6. Plain and SIMPLE. The 99 Badgers did NOT lose to Minnesota, winning 20-17.

    Hans, Hans, Hans...

You just don't get it do you? What did Michigan do with all those blue chip prospects since 2006? The answer is NOTHING. Lloyd could coach those guys, but RR lost 9 games and is well on pace for 7 more losses. MAybe it's the offense, maybe it's the defense. But the coach has to have SOME of the blame. Thanks for ensuring Bielema stays Wisconsin's coach. RR may not be so fortunate; back to back losses to MSU, Penn State and Purdue aren't exactly grounds for keeping coaches at Michigan...

I got some bad news for the past dwellers. The bcs and bowl bids don't look at what you DID do, they look at what your doing. Truth is, michigan sucks this year. The big ten isn't great. RR system will NOT work here so as long as he is there, michigan will continue to be one of the doormats here. I hope for a good showing for the big ten in bowls but face the facts, whosever team wins, the other person will say they got lucky. Maybe its because the other team is better??? Ya, thats it. OSU will get smashed by whomever they play in a bcs bowl this year, Iowa will keep it close but if its a high powered offense they face, it might get ugly. Penn St could do something special if clark plays well. Wisconsin actually has an alright D and a decent offense to play an sec team Janurary 1st, Northwestern can even surprise a team. Purdue, if they win out, can play with anyone-they shoulda beat oregon. Noone here cares about the past. If my team is playing well right now, thats something to be proud of. If your team isn't, better luck next year. The big ten in general NEEDS to win a majority of their bowl games to get some respect back.

The Ohio State/Michigan game will be played with the thought, I feel sorry for our once-proud rival "The Wolverines". No more! They did hired the low life of the college football world, Rich Rod, and have not just lost games, but have hurt the pride of the Battle. How Sad that college football has come to this very low level.

It is supposed to be in the event of a tie, the head to head result decides, however in the event of a three-way tie, the team that has not been in the game for the longest period of time goes. In the BCS era you don't need to win even a share of the Big Ten title to go to the Rose Bowl. If the league champion is playing for the BCS title the second place team or someone else goes. Illinois went in 2008 and actually finished 3rd in the conference behind OSU and Michigan. 3 games have had no Big Ten representative in recent years as well.

actually wisconsin has 3. they went to 3 rose bowls. u had to win the conference title or share the title to go. as for the 98 roses being michigans, ohio state also shared in the title, by beating michigan the very next weekend. i guess that would make those roses property of the buckeyes according to ur argument. nice try tho

I am done, as I have proven you and Cheese Whiz University both unworthy. Enjoy your bowl, I will still root for ALL the Big Ten teams in the bowls (even OSU)- no sour grapes here! The Big Ten could use some good press, hopefully the SEC stinks it up as well!

cooper did coach at osu during that 15 year span. i was giving u something to celebrate. since the sweater vest arrived on scene in columbus, michigan is his b1tch. rich rod was hired to bring pryor, but the vest got pryor. now with rich rod, michigan is everyone's b1tch. keep living in the past. u seem to think i am saying wisconsin is the new michigan. r u a retard? ive said that wisconsin is on par with ohio state and penn state. they are able to compete on an even level. if that makes them dominant in ur eyes, its only because um got their a$$es handed to them. stop twisting my words. i have not once claimed any form of dominance for uw. over the last 15 years they have become a team to reckon with. michigan is no longer guaranteed wins against anyone on the schedule. the big ten has parity. wisconsin dominated the game with ohio state offensively, but could not put it in the end zone. that doesnt make wisconsin dominant, but osu fans are smarter than michigan fans, because they knew wisconsin could play. u seem to believe that the only reason anyone can beat michigan is because michigan sucks right now. they lost before these last 2 years tho. wisconsin beat them before rich rod. michigan is not that team. they wont ever be that team again. no team in the big ten will ever have that dominance. ohio state is a great team, but its no longer the big 2 and little 8. its not even the big 3 and little 8. its the big ten(eleven). true parity. i know ur going to somehow twist my words yet again, so have at it homo

A medicated reality is not real, just like your delusions of Wisconsin being great! You threw out the last 15 years span, not me. in fact Wisconsin has only TWO Conference titles in that span to Michigan's five. The only reason that Wisconsin was in the Rose Bowl in 1999 was because Michigan was there the year before, so they back doored themselves in on the 1961 rule against back to back appearances. Michigan rolled to victory in the head to head game 27-10, the roses were rightfully theirs! John Cooper also coached OSU within the last 15 years as well, so he's open game by your rules, you just keep digging your hole deeper! I suggest you limit your discussion to the past 15 weeks instead of years, or you will lose every time! This all just a small speed bump of losing for Michigan, much like the speed bumps of winning Wisconsin experiences every couple of decades! Now get back on the porch doormats! You are a funny guy! You make me laugh! You are very amusing! Please hit your call button so your nurse can bring you some more happy pills!

btw hans it was 33 straight. now its 2 in a row missed. i was putting it in perspective of wisconsin going to 15 of 16. in that same span michigan is 14 of 16. is that better? did i wound ur little ego? dude grow up. michigan was a dominant program. WAS!!!! that era has ended. i was simply showing that wisconsin was on a level to compete evenly with michigan. u can live in the past, but i wont. as long as u look at wisconsin as another win on ur schedule, u will continue to get beat. in fact wisconsin is on a level playing field with michigan in basketball and hockey too. wtg msu hockey. guess um is little brother in this state now in all sports

oh btw i have not once said wisconsin was a dominant team. i said that michigan wasnt and will not ever enjoy the success they had in the past again. the big ten over the last 15 years has changed everything. wisconsin 3 rose bowls, penn st 2, michigan 4, ohio st 1, purdue 1, northwestern 1. keep the blinders on and deny that other teams can actually beat u regularly. for now u may want to stop watchin live games and continue to watch espn classic. the era of michigan is over. thank god for educated fans from schools like ohio state and penn state. they at least acknowledge that wisconsin has built a top tier program. kick that a$$ osu

take a look at the fall of michigan over the last 15 years. ur bowl streak is over so is ur dominance of the big ten. i suppose if u want to live in the past, u could bring up michigans dominance over ohio state during the cooper years. i have simply pointed out that michigan fans are the ignorant ones. they live in past glory while denying that their fall has been a long time coming. 14th in recruiting? they used to be top 5. if recruiting were everything, wouldnt michigan be better on the field? as for bielema being the worst coach in the big ten, how is it possible that he wins with such weak talent? keep trashing a team that won by 3 touchdowns. maybe next week u can replay past glory when osu kicks that a$$. im living in reality. michigan is just not that team anymore. they will never be that team again. wisconsin, iowa, illinois, michigan state, and apparently even indiana, northwestern, minnesota and purdue have closed the gap. wake up! michigan doesnt go to the rose bowl and lose like they used to. michigan doesnt win national championships. eventually the top talent wont even look at michigan because pro teams dont run the spread. the michigan teams of the past look nothing like the version on the field now. welcome to the 21st century. it wont be as kind as the 20th.

History cannot be manipulated just to suit your needs! So you found a 5 year span in a 113 year history where Wisconsin may be better, wow your dominant! Your arguments simply don't hold water!

i love how all michigan fans live in the past. over the last 15 years a lot has changed. rich rod is the don morton of michigan football. those numbers that u spout off were mostly built up before 1950. in the last 60 years michigan has 1/2 of a national championship. wisconsin has 15 bowl appearances in the last 16 years. michigan has 14 in the last 16 now. in the last 5 years wisconsin is 3-2 against michigan. times have changed. back in the day michigan was dominant. those days are over forever. michigan is just another football team now. rich rod will hopefully build them into another version of the 80s northwestern teams.

christian_atheist you just can't keep your pie hole closed can you? I wasn't going to put you in your place, but you started it and your just too frickin' stupid to realize that you are an ignorant putz! First off UW sucks and will never become a traditional Big Ten power.....EVER! Wisconsin just doesn't have the balls so I guess that is why your pull for them, you being a unich and all! Lets compare the tail of the tape shall we?
    Head2Head Michigan 49 Wisconsin 13 tied 1
National Titles Michigan 11 Wisconsin 0
    Big 10 Titles Michigan 42 Wisconsin 11
Heisman trophies Michigan 3 Wisconsin 2
All Americans Michigan 77 Wisconsin 21
NCAA HOF Michigan 33 Wisconsin 9
current NFL Michigan 43 Wisconsin 31
Final Score Michigan 258 Wisconsin 87
Nope, sorry you lose across the board!
Recruiting is the real gauge of a teams prestige, which is why Michigan is 14th and Wisconsin is 60th! Michigan could lose for more than a decade and the badgers would still a lesser team than Michigan is now! Michigan should of won the Alamo Bowl that year as they did a million lateral kick return at the final gun, Nebraska ran on the field thinking the game was over, a Nebraska player from the sideline made the TD saving tackle at the Nebraska 10, and the refs blew the call, later apologizing. Enough said, you will simply never rise to level of the Wolverines.....ever so why even try!
A Michigan hater from Michigan, what an idiot!

in response to ur last 3 posts, harbaugh will never be allowed to head the michigan football post. he made comments that incite hatred from former players and fans. the way the les miles situation was handled should have been a warning to anyone even thinking about the job. bill martin is running a mickey mouse operation in ann arbor.

as for boren, he made a good decision to abandon ship. rich rod is breaking ncaa rules. under most circumstances, u break them to gain an advantage. maybe thats why they were 4-0. when they practice according to the rules they go 1-7. if he gets caught, what will the ncaa do? not allowing them to go to a bowl is pointless because rich rod cant get them there anyway. sanctions would kill recruiting tho.

michigan doesnt even qualify for a bowl. i didnt say wisconsin would be playing in the alamo bowl. i said they would be playing on new years day. u may want to check urself.

when its all said and done rich rod will have set michigan football back so far that they will no longer be the winningest program in ncaa history.
