No. 19 Penn St. holds off Indiana, 31-20

Preview | Box Score | Recap

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Most teams don’t win games after four turnovers in one half, let alone one game.

When those turnovers come against Indiana though, anything is possible.

Linebacker Navorro Bowman returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown, tailback Evan Royster scored twice and No. 19 Penn State overcame its four first-half miscues—including two fumbles on special teams—to defeat Indiana 31-20 on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten), who still have an outside chance for a Bowl Championship Series berth, averted a disastrous upset on Senior Day thanks in large part to two top juniors—Bowman and Royster.

“It was an emotional game, a game of poise,” said Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who notched his 392nd career win. “We just didn’t play very well in the first half.”

Luckily for Penn State, the defense bounced back after getting caught off-guard against Indiana’s no-huddle offense to fall behind 10-0 in the first quarter.

It was a familiar theme for the Hoosiers (4-7, 1-6)—hanging tough on the road before slipping up late. They have led at Michigan, Northwestern and Iowa this season before finding ways to lose down the stretch.

It happened again Saturday in Happy Valley.

“Playing hard and competing the way we are, that needs to be the norm,” Indiana coach Bill Lynch said. “That’s the expectation, and we’ve got to make the plays within it.”

Instead, it was Bowman who made the momentum-swinging play.

After Collin Wagner’s field goal bounced off the right upright in the third quarter, Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell engineered a nice drive into Penn State territory—until his screen pass was tipped in the air by running back Trea Burgess.

Bowman snatched the ball at his own 27, then rumbled down the field with an escort of blockers for a touchdown to give Penn State its first lead, 17-10 with 6:54 left in the third quarter.

The junior said he’ll consider skipping his final year of eligibility to enter next spring’s NFL draft. He’s already got quite an impressive highlight reel, including a 91-yard fumble return for a TD earlier this season.

Compared to that return, his 73-yarder was easy—though he was still winded Saturday.

“You can only get better,” said a grinning Bowman, who finished with 12 tackles. “God is working with me, cut down the yards for me.”

Later, tailback Royster and his backup, Stephfon Green, softened up Indiana’s Big Ten-worst defense on the ground before Royster had a two-yard TD run for a two-touchdown lead with 14:57 left.

Royster finished with 95 yards on 17 carries and 39 yards receiving on four catches.

Indiana responded with a nice drive to the Penn State 21, but the Nittany Lions’ defense came up big on third down when safety Nick Sukay leveled receiver Mitchell Evans at the goal line, forcing the Hoosiers to settle for a field goal.

Royster thanked the defense for playing well and allowing the offense to find its traction.

“They shouldn’t have to do that, but the fact that we have a defense that can do that is a blessing,” Royster said. “We need to get better as an offense in these last two games if we want to win.”

Senior quarterback Daryll Clark finished 17 for 28 for 194 yards and a 13-yard TD pass to Royster just before the end of the first half to inject confidence into the offense. He also ran for 29 yards and a score on seven carries.

But Clark also threw two picks—including one on a tipped ball—in his last home game didn’t look sharp before regaining some rhythm in the second half.

His defense had to adjust, too, after having trouble early with Indiana’s no-huddle attack. Ben Chappell’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Damarlo Belcher midway through the first quarter gave the Hoosiers a 10-0 lead.

“We weren’t worried, we were happy. We were thinking, ‘Oh, we can move the ball on these guys,”’ Chappell said. “We had to continue to fight, which we did. And continue to make plays, which we didn’t do.”

Chappell finished 32 for 51 passing for 298 yards, plus one interception and two TDs, while Belcher had nine catches for 95 yards.

Penn State tried to help Indiana by fumbling away two punt returns in the first half. Defensive end Jerome Hayes also fumbled a short kickoff return to start the second half, though the ball was recovered by Penn State near midfield.

Still, the 100,000-plus fans packed into Beaver Stadium let out a collective groan as they witnessed more special teams mistakes, a season-long theme. The Nittany Lions shored up its porous punt coverage only to have setbacks in other areas.

Bowman, though, provided a game-changing play to send the Hoosiers home with another disappointing road loss.

“Indiana has been a really big first-half football team,” Paterno said. “They’ve been down a little bit, might need a few more people. All’s well that ends well.”

I don't understand the Clark bashing. The O Line and Special teams are awful this season. Its not ALL on the QB. He is the best PSU QB since Kerry Collins PERIOD. What you want Morelli or McQuery or Mills back? MRob had one solid year but ran WAY better than he ever passed the ball. His team also lost the big Michigan game that year. Also Clark , against a USC D that had everyone drafted, played very well even with Royster and Green hurt. PSUs D just got abused by Sanchez and his WRs in that game.

Yeah they won big FREAKIN deal.I am still not happy. No championship is to be won for the Nits so there is no reason to watch them this year anymore. HOW THE HELL DO YOU LOSE AT HOME TWICE THIS SEASON?!?!?! TWICE??????? This offense is anemic. Oh I can't wait until Clark is done as QB. What a failure that became.

Penn State is ranked about where they should be. Can't win the big games will be the footnote to Darryl Clarks's legacy. Games against Iowa and OSU, the offensive coaches of Penn State retreated inside their shell like scared turtles. Decided not to lose the game by being conservatice while that's exactly why they lost. Open the playbook. From where I sit, I haven't seen the spread HD offense in a few games. That's the date that brought you to the dance, that's the one you should still be with. Big Ten conference has four ranked teams. After all the crybabies that say it is such a weak conference and the SEC is supposed to be the best, I look and don;t see the SEC as that strong this year. I really think they are down and PAC 10 is up. But, Boise St, Cincinnati and TCU are as good as any team from the big Four conferences. The whole BCS thing is just the continuation of a joke of picking the best team by corrupted voters. We really do need some playoff system. Let's have 1 play 4 and 2 play three at the end of the season with the higher ranked team being home. Then have the championship game played at a neutral site. I mean NEUTRAL too. USC playing in the Rose Bowl is a home game for them. This should NEVER happen. Let Ohio State, Notre Dame or Penn State play a home game agaisnt the SEC or PAC10 in Dec or Jan and let's see how well they do. We will miss our seniors at PSU. Great job guys!

Although the record won't reflect it, IU has had a turnaround season. This is a team in the past years who've not even been able to compet with most of the Big Ten. However, this year, they've led or been right in the game with most of the conference's better teams. Just need to add a few more players to get over the top.

Just how bad is it to say that IU can't even win the Big Ten Conference in football in over 40 years. Not asking for much... just beat out 10 other teams!

Pretty sad when the basketball team can beat out the rest of the country 3 times from 76, 81, and 87!

Result is the same. Another loss for IU. The script is almost the same. Strong in the opening half. Performance begins to tail off. Fumbles and interceptions that led to another loss.
When you review the season, it is very clear that there is a smal core of good players but the team lacks the depth and really good athletes to last an entire game. Some players simply are unable to play the full 60 minutes at the same intensity because the legs are not there.
It gets back to the reruits for next year. You have got to have better quality atheletes coming through the system. Until your squad is at least stuffed with 3/4-star rated athletes and not based on walk-ons, the late game losses will continue to show up. I do not have anything against the walk-ons athletes. In fact, I admire their courage and determination to stick it out. This is IU's traditional problem in football.

    #7 (Brian) is right!

Indiana is 4-7 right now, but...

    ---

9/26 - Loss 33-36 AT Michigan (Indiana was leading halfway through the 4th and might have won but for a blown interception call)

10/24 - Loss 28-29 AT Northwestern (Indiana was leading 28-3 halfway through the 2nd and might have won but for giving up 26 straight points including a blocked punt safety which turned out to be the difference maker)
(Also, Northwestern was the team that finally toppled undefeated Iowa two weeks later.)

11/7 - Loss 28-31 VS Wisconsin (Who beat Michigan in a lopsided 45-24 win today, and shut out the Purdue team [that Indiana will face next week] 37-0!)

    ---

If those three losses alone had been wins - Indiana would be 7-4 right now heading into the Purdue game.

    Now consider:

10/31: Loss 24-42 AT Iowa (Indiana was leading 21-7 at the half, and 24-14 at the end of the third, before giving up four straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Iowa was undefeated at the time, ranked #7. Indiana hasn't beat a team ranked that high since when?)

11/14: Today's Loss, 20-31 AT Happy Valley (Indiana was leading 10-0 with three minutes left in the 2nd quarter - tied with the Big 10 powerhouse Nittany Lions at the half. Final Score, Penn State 31, Indiana 20. Not exactly a blowout, considering Penn State was at home.)

If Indiana could have escaped with one of these two games, and the three close losses above, they would be 8-3. If (improbably) they had beaten Penn State AND Iowa, they would be 9-2!

What if the Hoosiers had been able to keep Kellen Lewis, who was extremely valuable for them the last few years, under control, and converted him to a wideout like they had wanted? Difference maker? Could have been.

The point is - it has been a long time since Indiana has, week in and week out, competed with other Big 10 teams. Look at last year's record - Indiana was blown out in almost every conference game. The year before that, they made a bowl game, although against a much easier schedule. The years before that are the same - most of the conference matchups were blowouts. It's true that this year's Big 10 is a little bit down overall, but not significantly so. Despite what the national analysts say, the Big 10 is always a formidable conference.

These Hoosiers aren't afraid anymore. Hopefully they can get a win next week and bring the Old Oaken Bucket back to Bloomington and then shock and awe the country

How come none of the "good" Big Ten teams can blow out IU? IU has been a few key plays away from winning just about every game. It's only a matter of time until they'll be winning those games.
