Dalton leads No. 6 TCU to 55-12 win over SDSU

Preview | Box Score | Recap

SAN DIEGO (AP)—TCU rolled over San Diego State to stay in the perfect position for a stretch run to a BCS bowl.

Behind Andy Dalton’s two touchdown passes and a pair of TD runs, and its top-ranked defense, No. 6 TCU ran its winning streak to 12 games in a 55-12 rout of San Diego State on Saturday.

The Horned Frogs (9-0, 5-0 Mountain West) remained in the chase for their first BCS bowl with a dominating performance.

“That’s the big thing,” Dalton said. “Our ultimate goal is to end the season undefeated. We have a lot of potential but we have to keep going out and playing like this.”

Dalton led an offense that scored on five of its first six possessions and gained more than 500 yards for the second straight game. The Horned Frogs were ahead of fellow undefeated Boise State, from the Western Athletic Conference, in last week’s BCS standings.

The Horned Frogs jumped in front with touchdowns on five of their first six possessions in the first half. Dalton scored on runs of 13 and 7 yards as TCU held a 31-6 halftime lead. He also hit Ryan Christian on TD passes of 44 and 29 yards.

“Early in the season on the road, we didn’t start out fast,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “One of the things I think we are finally doing, especially on offense, is that we are starting faster. That’s what you have to do in the last half of the season. You let people hang around, anything can happen.”

San Diego State (4-5, 2-3 MWC) struggled against TCU’s top-ranked defense, managing just a 30-yard TD pass from Ryan Lindley to DeMarco Sampson and two field goals by Lane Yoshida.

“That was a long day,” Aztecs coach Brady Hoke said. “I haven’t been in one of these in a long time. They’re a good football team. We got beat in every phase.”

TCU’s 11-game winning streak is the nation’s third-longest behind Florida’s 18-game and Texas’s 13-game streak. Iowa had won 13 straight before losing to Northwestern earlier Saturday. The top-ranked Gators took on Vanderbilt later Saturday.

The Horned Frogs have outscored their last four opponents, 178-25. TCU, which gained a season-high 578 yards in last week’s 41-0 win at UNLV, had 551 against the Aztecs.

“Right now, we are a confident team,” Horned Frogs running back Joseph Turner said. “We feel that no matter what play the coaches call, we are going to be successful.”

Turner led TCU with 79 yards on nine carries and scored on a 4-yard run. Ed Wesley added a 5-yard TD run and Matthew Tucker scored from 30 yards.

Dalton, who left the game late in the third quarter, finished 14 of 20 for 239 yards. He also rushed for 44 yards on five carries. Christian had three catches for 106 yards.

“We have so many athletes on this team,” Dalton said. “It makes it easy to get the ball to different people and let them do their thing.”

TCU ran the ball for 312 yards on 53 carries. It was the second straight game the Horned Frogs topped 300 yards rushing, the first time since November 2000, when LaDainian Tomlinson was a senior.

The Horned Frogs’ defense, ranked first in the country in total defense, produced four turnovers that led to 13 points. The Aztecs, who had their two-game winning streak snapped, gained just 279 yards.

Lindley completed 16 of 34 passes for 164 yards.

Hey 19 -put down the crack pipe. Ranked #1? You think they will beat Tex. Fla. or Ala. I'm not a fan of any of those teams ,but know enough about college ball to say That's crazy talk!

I am a Boise State fan, and I will be rooting for them to get into the BCS. With that said, I hope TCU also plays in a BCS game. I would love to see TCU get a chance to play for the National Championship. I have watched most of their games, and I think TCU could play with, and beat, any team in the country. Good luck TCU, take care of Utah this week.

That would be funny if Alabama and Florida both drop a game before the season's end, and TCU plays Texas for the National Championship.

Actually, it would bring back a legacy Southwest Conference rivalry - the SWC folded in 1997 when Texas, T-Tech, A&M and Baylor bolted and joined the legacy Big 8, forming the Big 12. Along with those four teams, the SWC had TCU, Rice, Houston, SMU and Arkansas (Arkansas fled to the SEC in 1991).

I'm sick of the crybaby fans from Boise saying how good they are and how no one wants to play them. Sorry little broncs, but you don't let a team you should drub score 35 points on you. TCU on the otherhand is a very good football team and well coached. I'm a Longhorn, but I think TCU will give anyone a game, including anyone in the SEC. Hey, they're Texas boys! Keep it up Frogs! You're good for college football. Boise, Cincy, Iowa, all posers. TCU, the real deal.

If you take out LSU, then there isn't much there. Plus they needed the assistence of the zebras to beat Arkansas. But how can you honestly say that their schedule is that much harder than TCU and BSU with teams like FIU, Troy, Charleston Southern (Who?), and Vanderbuilt on their schedule?
Or Texas' is that much harder with UTEP, L-M, UCF, Baylor, and Colorado?

    Swampthing,
I think that your post made me realize that TCU plays a tougher schedule that UT, which is hard for me to admit, but look at their schedule...

    Sat, Sep 5 Louisiana-Monroe W 59-20 --
    Sat, Sep 12 at Wyoming W 41-10 --
    Sat, Sep 19 Texas Tech W 34-24 --

Sat, Nov 14 at Baylor 12:00 pm --
Sat, Nov 21 Kansas TBA --
Thu, Nov 26 at Texas A&M 8:00 pm

UT-has just as many cupcakes as TCU because of their out of conference games, also their conference is pretty weak this year. Best wins come against OU and OkSU, only OkSU is still in the top 25.

TCU- best wins, away at Clemson, now #24, away at BYU in top 25, and home at Utah.

I have to agree with Michael now, that TCU is the best in Texas.

The reason TCU doesn.t play any SEC conference teams is that most, if not all the teams in the Sec are afraid to schedule TCU

I live here in Ft. Worth and have never cared for TCU, because they typically choke (see SMU) when everything is on the line and their fans are Football Boneheads that don't watch any other teams and therefore know little about the potential competitiion. However, I have watched them play this year and I must say that this team is for real. Defense is outstanding, Offense is outstanding and Coaching is outstanding. This is the best team in College football and no other team wants to play them. They will beat Texas, Florida, Bama or anyone else they may play in the BS... BCS. I really hate to admit that, but it is a fact. It will be fun to watch them beat the "Elite" teams.

Enough said... You must play someone through out the year to be in the BCS...... TCU does not play anyone but UTAH. So you win one game and you get a shot.. Read this schedule and type something like you belong in the same breathe as Florida and Alabama and Texas. The schedule is a who's who of nobodies in college football. I think Utah has a good program and I think TCU is a good team, however they do not play the schedules that the others in the top ten play. I thought UTAH proved that they are the best trap opponent in the country. How do you get your team excited to play Utah. You win and you beat UTAH? You lose and it was a hang over loss to the SEC championship game following you not playing for the NC. TCU and UTAH should change conferences if they want respect. Good luck where ever you play a bowl but it will not be a NC game.

As a Boise State fan, may hat's off to TCU on an amazing season. They should be ranked #1 in the nation and if they win out should play for the National Championship. They'd certainly beat any of the teams rated ahead of them. I doubt that they'll be allowed to play for the National Championship, however, just like I doubt that Boise State will also qualify for a BCS Bowl if they remain unbeaten because of the way the BCS monopoly is arranged in favor of the so-called power conferences who are sorely overrated.

    Michael,
I think that you are forgetting about UT. The highest TCU will finish this week is number four (behind UT, Florida, and Bama). Hopefully with that narrow win over UConn, the Frogs will jump Cinci, and be number four (They were in the Coach's poll last week). Then Bama or Florida will loose in the SEC Championship. While I like UT, I think it would be great if they lost to Baylor, A & M, or the North. That would put the BCS in a precarious situation, and might place in a position to put TCU in the Championship game. (Assuming that Cinci will loose to Pitt).

With Iowa losing, and Oregon out of the picture after dropping a second game, TCU should move up to 3 or 4 in the rankings (between the Horned Frogs and Cincinnati Bearcats) with Boise State moving into 5th. Now..........if Florida could just drop one......perhaps to Alabama in the SEC Championship game.
