Northwestern upsets No. 8 Iowa 17-10

Preview | Box Score | Recap

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—With Ricky Stanzi watching from the sideline on crutches, No. 8 Iowa ran out of magic.

Dan Persa threw a touchdown pass and Marshall Thomas recovered a fumble for another score, and Northwestern dealt a crushing blow to Iowa’s national championship hopes with a 17-10 victory Saturday.

Stanzi was knocked out of the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter on the play in which Thomas scored the Wildcats’ first touchdown.

“Anytime you lose your quarterback, that’s not good,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said.

The Hawkeyes (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten) have been living dangerously all season, making a habit of comebacks and close games. Still, they were good enough to be fourth in the latest BCS standings, hoping that with a slip or two by Florida, Alabama and Texas they could end up in the BCS national championship game in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 7.

Now that their 13-game winning streak—second longest in the nation—has been snapped, the Hawkeyes’ focus can shift to the other big game in Pasadena. Iowa can still win the Big Ten and land in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 for the first time since the 1990 season.

It was the first win over a top-10 opponent for the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) since knocking off No. 6 Ohio State 33-27 in overtime in 2004. It also ended the nation’s second-longest winning streak.

Ferentz said Stanzi had a “severe” ankle injury. Freshman James Vandenberg was just 9 of 27 for 82 yards and couldn’t lead the Hawkeyes to any points after Stanzi left the game.

Ferentz said that while preliminary X-rays on Stanzi’s ankle were negative, he’ll likely be out the next couple of weeks. That’s not a good sign for the Hawkeyes heading into next week’s game against Ohio State in Columbus. Iowa finishes up at home against Minnesota.

“Right now we just have to take the approach that he won’t go, and if he does that’s a bonus,” Ferentz said.

Northwestern scored twice off turnovers in the second quarter. Thomas’ fumble recovery made it 10-7. Drake Dunsmore caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Persa after another Iowa miscue.

Brandon Wegher had 63 yards rushing for Iowa. Stanzi was 4 of 9 for 134 yards with a touchdown, an interception and that costly fumble. Iowa committed four turnovers.

“It’s hard to win football games against good, competitive teams, and that’s basically everybody in our conference, if you’re going to turn the ball over,” Ferentz said. “If you do that week in, week out, you’re not going to win many football games. That’s what has allowed us to be successful. We have to get back to that formula.”

Vandenberg, a native of Keokuk, Iowa, who holds the state high school record for career touchdown passes, had thrown three passes entering the game.

His inexperience showed and after the Hawkeyes won four games by three points or fewer this season they finally had a hole too deep to climb out.

Northwestern’s Stefan Demos hit a 47-yard field goal with 13:29 left to give the Wildcats a 17-10 lead. The Hawkeyes had a chance to tie the game after taking over with 2:04 left on their own 17, but an incomplete pass on fourth down sent the Northwestern bench erupting in celebration.

Stanzi watched from the sideline in a warmup suit with crutches. He was taken to the locker room after being drilled in the end zone by Corey Wootton with 11:46 to go in the second quarter.

“Obviously it was a big momentum play. Not only get the sack to cause a fumble but you also get the touchdown,” Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said of the hit that knocked out Stanzi. “It was greatly important from a momentum standpoint.”

Vandenberg’s first pass was intercepted by Quentin Davie, and Northwestern took advantage. Persa’s TD pass to Dunsmore gave the Wildcats their first lead, 14-10.

This was a huge win for Northwestern, which just last week got drilled by Penn State 34-13. Starting quarterback Mike Kafka left that game with a hamstring injury, and he and Persa split the snaps before Persa left in the third quarter with an apparent hand injury.

Before the injury to Stanzi, it looked like the Hawkeyes might finally have an easy game. They needed three plays for Stanzi to find Marvin McNutt for a 74-yard touchdown catch to make it 7-0, and Murray’s 39-yard field goal pushed the lead to 10 midway through the first quarter.

But a week after committing six turnovers in a win over Indiana, Iowa turned it over four times in the second quarter against the Wildcats. Northwestern took its 14-10 lead despite gaining just 109 yards of offense in the first half.

The Hawkeyes honored former coach Forest Evashevski, who died last week at the age of 91, with a helmet decal and highlights on the scoreboard. Evashevski coached at Iowa from 1952-60, leading the Hawkeyes to three Big Ten titles and two wins in the Rose Bowl.

These Hawkeyes still control their Rose Bowl hopes.

“There’s no time to hang our heads,” Vandenberg said. “We’re in a race with two other good teams and it’s all going to be about getting back to work.”

psu is in the SAME conference. miked just reinterated a pt i made in other posts. arizona hasnt played any of the good teams in their conf yet. psu has never been worthy of a top 10, maybe top 15 rating all year. they have beaten nobody good. now the hawkeyes, who once were in title hopes, now are fighting for the capital one bowl... again. im not here to bash the hawks, im just tired of hearing how "tough" ur schedule is and how good ur football program is. back to reality hawk fans, iowa is a WRESTLING school.

I understand what your saying and you are correct. Thats not the point im trying to get to. What I want to see out of Iowa and it has not happened for hundreds of years is for them to beat a ranked team when the team is actually ranked. Yes im looking for that "attention". Look at some games like USC / Ohio st, Miami / Oklahoma, Oregon / Boise st, Georgia / Oklahoma st, Michigan / Notre Dame. All these games are "outside" of conference and at the time a big game with two ranked teams going at it. I dont give two sh##'s that Iowa beat Arizona who 9 weeks later cracks the top 20. Plus Arizona still has to play Cali, Oregon, and USC so bye bye to your Hawks sos at the end of the year. And then I can say Iowa has not beat a ranked team outside there conference at all this year. That includes before, during and after the season.

219, thanks for explaining to that dumb azs moron miked! Guess he doesn't understand that being ranked at the end of the year is what counts and shows the strenght of the team you beat. But being he is only an eight grader, I can understand, lol. Whats your team there miked the jerky boy?

    miked,

It doesn't matter if they were ranked when you beat them or if they were 0-3 when you beat them, if they are ranked at the end of the season is all that matters. Thats what affects the SOS at the end of the season so you're an idiot if you think it matters. It only matters that you get more attention for beating them when they are ranked vs. not ranked.

agian you cant read!!! Wow this is the third time I have to explain to you that the only Big Ten team to win against a ranked team at the time they played them is Michigan. Arizona was NOT ranked when Iowa played them. Wow your stupid.

Hey 214 miked, your the moron dumb azsss! I read good, guess you can't see straight! Arizona is ranked so guess they had a winning record when Iowa beat them. What does it matter dumb buttt, you don't make the rankings anyway, lol. Your just a dumb azs who thinks he knows football. But doesn't! I'm a Florida fan and we rule you! I just don't like to see teams get ragged on by morons like you who can win 13 straight games and not get credit for it. If Iowa had a QB like our Tebow, they would be National Contenders. Surprising how well they have done with a QB that throws 50/50 TD/Int . Whats your team loser? I'm sure we could find something to bash on it, lol. Surprising also how teams with one lose fall below teams with two loses. Ahhh, yes, politics I'm sure. It will be funny if Arizona beats USC and goes to the Rose Bowl, lol. Florida has the HOTTEST Cheer Leaders by far!

    206. That's hilarious, an eye gouge on the football field is WAY worse than drunken driving, or drunk and disorderly fighting with non-athletes in bars? Not only funny, but one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Cheap shots happen in every single football game and it's not like he was going to blind the guy. Even the guy it happened to laughed it off. On the other hand drunk drivers kill people every day. Picking fights with smaller, weaker people in bars usually ends up in broken jaws, noses, in the case of some of the PSU fights, near death. But yeah, an eye gouge is worse. On top of that, the guy got suspended for a real game; Ferentz suspends his guys for some practices and a few for the spring game. Wow, nice twisted measuring stick you use.

    #126 T Stewart,

    WOW, guess you cant read!

I said no one except Michigan has beaten a ranked team OUTSIDE the conference. So , Wisconsin, and Penn St dont count moron. And as far as Arizona they were not ranked at the time and must have the same schedule as the hawks. Because they some how won some games and are ranked now. Not then.Teams get better, teams get worse. Again, Michigan is the only big ten team to win a ranked game outside the OVERRATED big ten

The hawks never play anyone good. They could have gone undefeated and still would never get my respect. They are losers

Very, very, VERY disappointing loss to freakin' Northwestern yesterday. The Hawkeyes were chugging along just fine until Ricky Stanzi got hurt. It appeared to me that all the wind went out of Iowa's sails once Mr. Stanzi got injured. It was all downhill for the Hawkeyes after that. Personally, I have NO DOUBTS that had Ricky Stanzi not gotten hurt, Iowa would have gone on to CRUSH the Mildcats, but they didn't so now they'll be licking their wounds on the way to Columbus where, I'm sorry to say, I'm afraid they're going to get creamed. Without Ricky Stanzi I just don't see how the Hawkeyes are going to be able to beat the Buckeyes, especially in Columbus (actually, I'm not sure the Hawkeyes would have beaten the Buckeyes even with Ricky Stanzi, but without him I think they have very little chance). Iowa's probably my favorite Big Ten football team (along with Penn State's) but I think they're going to have to set their sites on a bowl other than the Rose Bowl for after this season.

Iowa is a great football program. Sure they wouldn't be ranked 25 th with a 3-3 record. And Cincinatti who have they played? Iowa beat PSU, Arizona, MSU, Michigan. If they were to beat Ohio State well that will be quite a statement. The Big Least will be defined when Illinois knocks out Cincinatti. Sure the Bid Ten isn't what it used to be but at least they played some good opponents. Psst here is a liitle secret every majot college football team has sleazy skleletons in the closet. It a big buck business. Let's quit pretending it has anything to do with academics.

The other great thing is iowa only loses about 6 starters next year . talk about looking forward to next year!! and what about the bowl game this year wherever it may be. alot of people will be healthy by then . great for recruiting. No matter how much iowa gets bashed by the media ,if the offence can pick it up and stand out like the defence does , I say lets play. The sad thing about these posts is that some jackass with a computer can poke iowa fans with a stick and try n get a responce . really sad. instead of being on their own schools posts they have to come to iowas. really really sad.

    210. No I'm just making fun of the idiot that thinks Ferentz is such a good coach he'd walk into ND and win NCs every year. Pretty funny for a coach who can't even win the Big 10 with what are hyped to be top ten recruiting classes and a few years of senior laden teams that were supposed to get over the top and never even came close. Iowa has accomplished nothing in 50 years. In the last 15 we've seen Illinois, Wisconsin, even freaking Northwestern win the Big 10 along with the usuals of UM, PSU, OSU. Iowa has been losing to Indiana and Northwestern regularly. But we do agree on one thing. ND is a freaking laughing stock and should already have 5 losses. They will get crushed by Pitt, lose to Stanford and have their hands full with UConn. I'm not bashing the Hawks, just bashing the idiots that deify their coach who is far from a saint. And no, Iowa does not have higher academic standards than anyone else. That's a joke. UM, Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois are all far higher ranked schools academically in their own conference. Actually, ND is one school that has recruited with higher academic standards than most other schools, but not Iowa. Quit making stupid junk up.

Yeah yeah , ok lets talk Iowa football . Why cant iowa develop their quarterbacks. it seems like the same old song and dance the past 3-5 years. The freshman was totally lost out there, didnt the coaching staff know that if stanzi got hurt iowa was screwed. when you have 4-5 receivers that could be all conference (djk, moeki) .what does that say about the coaching staff (especially the offence). I personally think that okeef sucks for many reasons. Im happy the hawks are 9-1 but I dont think its too much to exspect more for what they get payed. replies??

Iowa is a great team period! 9-1 with one of the hardest SOS in the nation. Northwestern has Iowa's number and Congrads to them they earned it. Now for some of you homers and haters that have nothing better to do then jump on and post junk (Dan G, GayLyn, David S and others) I'm surprised many of you can turn a computer on. Here is part of an article I really liked by Olin Buchanan, Rivals.com:

" I've often compared SEC football fans to a beautiful woman who's painfully insecure: No matter how many times she's told she's beautiful, it's never enough. She needs constant validation. And if you have the audacity to say someone else is beautiful, too, she throws a tantrum, slings dishes and slashes your tires. That's SEC fans in a nutshell, with the emphasis on "nut." "

Have a good day everyone and be proud of your Hawkeyes!

    204. Iowa has a higher academic level than NCAA standards is what 187 is saying. Say what you want about the arrests that have been made. Drinking happens at all colleges. But the eye gouge that he was talking about was worst than any drinking crime that they may do. That is purely uncalled for and for Urban Meyer, the D*ck of all coaches to suspend him for a half is a joke. Urban just wants another National Championship and nothing will get in his way.

    201. That's pretty funny too. Between '03 and '06 Iowa was lauded as having monster recruiting classes and given top 10 preseason rankings at least twice, only to wildly underachieve. That shows lack of development and coaching. Likewise, dozens of players have had off-field issues over the past few years, with little or no discipline, showing a lack of control. Funny how you Iowa fans don't even know your own team. Maybe that's why people are enjoying riling you to hear your ridiculous replies. But sure, Ferentz would just walk into ND and win an NC. pretty funny statement considering Ferentz has had better recruits and a softer schedule than ND and still hasn't even come close to winning his own conference.
