DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP)—Cedric Hickman’s 12-yard touchdown run with 9:15 left gave Winston-Salem State its first lead, and the Rams held on for a 16-10 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
The Rams (1-6) padded their lead on Landen Thayer’s 36-yard field goal with 5:29 to go.
Bethune-Cookman (2-5) had an opportunity to tie the score, but the Rams stopped Androse Bell at the 1-yard line on a fourth-down play from the 3 with 19 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead when Bell scored from the 1 with 3:29 left in the second quarter.
Winston-Salem State cut the lead to 7-6 before Bethune-Cookman took a 10-6 advantage.
Hickman had 97 yards on nine carries.
Bell led the Wildcats with 71 yards on 23 carries.
Bethune-Cookman, which controlled the ball for more than 39 minutes, was 9 of 18 on third-down chances. The Rams failed to convert any third-down opportunities.
