No. 14 Penn St. stifles Minnesota, 20-0

Preview | Box Score | Recap

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark was so impressed with Derek Moye’s stretching catch at the side of the end zone, he watched the replay on a stadium video screen for another look.

The officials took a second glance, too, and what they saw changed their minds.

Moye’s toe-dragging, 12-yard grab just before halftime was overturned from an incomplete pass to a touchdown that gave the 14th-ranked Nittany Lions’ stifling defense more than enough cushion to work with in a 20-0 victory Saturday against Minnesota.

“I was just impressed with the catch. Then I saw the referee rule incomplete,” Clark said. “We looked at it on film and I celebrated. He was in, touchdown definitely.”

Evan Royster ran for 137 yards and Navorro Bowman had eight tackles to lead Penn State’s league-leading defense to its first shutout since November 2007.

“We did move the ball well, but we didn’t do a particularly good job when we got in the red zone. I think the penalties hurt us,” Paterno said. “Overall, it was a good performance.”

Buoyed by the return of star linebacker Sean Lee from a sprained left knee, Penn State (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) held a foe without a first-half touchdown for the seventh straight game. The defense held Minnesota star receiver Eric Decker to one catch—a 42-yard reception late in the third quarter.

The shutout warmed the homecoming crowd bundled in parkas and winter coats after a storm dumped more than 6 inches of snow the previous day. Penn State said the 37 degrees at kickoff at Beaver Stadium was the coldest on record for homecoming at the school.

The university closed grass lots around the stadium because of the snow, and asked fans to limit tailgating to conserve space.

The blue-and-white faithful celebrated anyway—both outside and inside the stadium—though the Nittany Lions overcame an uncharacteristically high number of mistakes and penalties.

Penn State held decisive edges in total offense (464-138), first downs (21-7) and time of possession, holding the ball for 41:59. It was the longest Penn State held possession in a game since 1991.

“To be a good defense you have to handle adversity well, and in some situations we didn’t do that,” Minnesota linebacker Lee Campbell said.

Penn State also had nine penalties for 76 yards, though Royster and Moye helped give their defense more than enough cushion over the struggling Gophers (4-3, 2-2) in chilly Happy Valley.

“We’re really frustrated because we felt like we had a great opportunity, especially in this kind of environment and this kind of weather we felt we had the opportunity to do something special,” Minnesota quarterback Adam Weber said. “Very frustrated. This game hurts.”

Clark overcame a middling start to finish 21 of 32 passing for 287 yards and the touchdown pass to Moye. He also scored a 1-yard TD run to give Penn State a 20-point lead in the third quarter.

Moye, who finished with six catches for 120 yards, made several pretty receptions, including the TD catch in which he barely managed to keep his feet in the end zone before falling out of bounds.

It was the second review that went Penn State’s way on a drive that gave the Nittany Lions a 13-0 lead late in the first half.

“I’ve always been for instant replay,” Paterno said. “I think instant replay is a good thing for everybody.”

The Gophers’ offense finally found traction early in the fourth quarter, driving to the Penn State 1. That didn’t go well either after running back Kevin Whaley was stuffed on fourth down on a sweep left by Bowman and cornerback A.J. Wallace just short of the goal line.

Weber felt pressure from Penn State’s front line most of the day and finished 10 of 22 for 101 yards and an interception. Decker had his second straight sub-par game, after catching three balls for 50 yards the previous week.

Lee hadn’t played since Week 3. The defensive captain played mostly on passing downs, finishing with two tackles on a unit that shut down a Minnesota offense that was averaging 27 points a game.

“This game really was a game from the start we thought we could dominate this team,” Bowman said. “We weren’t going to let this team get anything, we weren’t going to give them anything.”

0 points in a college football game, Dan G. How do YOU live with that? Get educated. Air Force RUNS the football in an option offense (flexbone)...much too complicated for you to understand. Top 10 rushing team in the nation for the last 20+ years. If you need help, watch tapes of Colorado, Nebraska, Air Force back in their better years. Not much passing there either. They were top ranked teams...where was Minnesota? Shoveling snow during bowl games.

    Patricia, Gimp

I just looked at the boxscore, TWO total passing yards in the game against Wyoming?

LMFAO this argument is officially over.

    20-13. Icing on the cake.

Patrica - please refer to AF-Wyoming blog. I'll give you TCU but Utah and BYU? Come on. Maybe a challenge in the Mountain West but that's it.

Have you learned to love 20-13 yet?

    Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Dan G, for someone who thinks he knows college football sure sounds uneducated in his posts. The AFA has played a ranked team. TCU. Maybe if you would read the papers and columns you would find them in discussions for a potential BCS bowl. They played TCU a lot closer than the Ground Hogs played Penn State. In fact, did the Hogs even show? 0 points in a college football game? That sucks.

I don't know...I think I would be happier shutting out an unranked team than being shut out by a ranked team. A win is a win, and a loss is a loss. Besides...what does being a ranked team really mean, anyway? Iowa was unranked and had no problem beating a then #5 Penn State.

Patricia - 20-13. Have a nice day. Play a ranked team, then flap.

Michael - nobody cares about your ignorance. You have insecurity issues and it's obvious.

#31 - TD was on 3rd down, but you're right, probably not a game changer. Interference calls were pretty terrible, lot of feet tangiling and it wasn't the only time it was called.

You're an idiot. 13 points??? LMFAO. Wrong. Explain how the officials helped Harvin blow by 8 guys en route to a kickoff TD. Please enlighten me how Sidney Rice was assisted on a TD pass from Favre, or Greg Lewis's catch with 2 seconds left was the result of a bad call? That's 21 points you clown. 6-0. Eat it up.

Haha Dan G, complaining about the officials in a blowout ( this game), but can't admit they were the main reason the Vikes beat the Niners and are 5-0, in a game that came down to the last second, the officials gave the Viqueens 13 pts that game, and they only won by 3...and that TD was a good call, he had possession, and maintained possession while dragging his feet...and a Golden Gonad fan wants to cry about that and somehow with their poor and biased vision can't agree, then call it a make up call on the phantom holding call on the play before that took the TD away from Royster, beeoootttchhhh

That interference call was correct. If you look closely at the replay, contact cause the receiver to stumble. They have to call that.

The TD overturned replay surprised me a little because I'm not sure the receiver had the ball. But its not like that was 4th down, probably not a game changer.

Any 1-AA school would have more pride than MN. Maybe the fan base in Minny should try to imitate Iowa's fans, rather than chanting about how much they hate them while playing Air Force.

And speaking of Iowa, wasn't 2002 fun? Have they found those goal posts yet?

If I have to explain to you why MN fans won't renew, you're not paying attention. When you see the crowd for MSU, you'll understand.

Oh and that TD doesn't even matter, how about the BS taunting call (that 99% of players do after every play they make) that gave them 3 pts, or the weak defensive holding call that gave them their 1st TD and AP's only good run, or the missed block in the back (that was RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REF) on a punt return that lead to another 3 pts?....But anyways, I did read you and your buddies comments, did you really think the Gophers had a chance? I think my favorite play was the 4th and goal where the Minnesota guy was running, and probably thinking to himself "Wow, finally we might actually score some points", then BOOM, he was denied! lol

Yeah i saw that fumble, Penn State recovered it anyways, he actually saved Minnesota 5 extra yards because they spotted it where the guy went down, not where the other penn stater recovered...nice try though...the gophers do suck, 20-0 has nothing to do with the officials, 464-138 total yards has nothing to do with the officials....and what was the spread? lol, i love the first couple of comments on here, just noticed them

Shut up MDK, there was no where NEAR enough evidence to overturn the TD. Also it was convenient that the officials missed a key fumble at the 2nd half kickoff. Like I said, Gophers were horrible but in addition to playing PSU's stout defense they had to play the officials as well.

PSU's offense didn't look that good. We lost the Iowa game fair and square and need another win against a good team before I even think Penn State is big bowl worthy.

Don't even give me the officiating crap, would have been a blow out anyways (it was nice to see the refs actually decided to make the CORRECT call on a replay, unlike the BS during the Iowa game)....but being a Minnesota fan you should be used to crappy officiating going your way (see the Vikings Vs. 49ers game, proof enough)

Jeff D, Dan G, you're on crack for sure. And Purdue just beat the schmuckeyes. So much for PSU's Big Ten Champ hopes being dead! Looks like PSU will do very well if they can beat Michigan at home and OSU at Beaver Stadium. After Purdue beating the schmuckeyes, I'm licking my chops. Nov. 7th could be a very satisfying meal for the Lions! For the Glory, baby! You Gophers are gonna get a @#$% slapping. Watch and see!

    1. You have to win at least 6 games to go to a bowl. Do you know anything about college football?
    2. The Gophers no longer play in the Dome. If you haven't heard they play at a new stadium. ON CAMPUS
    3. Iowa...Hisss
    4. Yes why wouldn't fans do that?

I recommend learning about college football before trashing another team. Just because your I-AA school sucks doesn't mean you need to post ur insecurities on the web.

It's nice to see a POS like you from St.Paul talking trash about his home team. You are fair weather so why don't you go find a home elsewhere. You are not wanted here. Every body knows the Gophers program is being turned around as we speak. This will not happen over night so get your cheap shots in while you can. Any retard could talk trash about a team that has struggled for years. Wow. You are real tough. I would like to see you talk your little trash to actual fans at the games. You would be crying like a little bitc.h.
BTW: The Gophers are still 4-2 as of right now. We have great fans considering the mediocrity we have put on the field.

    GO GOPHERS!!!!!!!
