HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP)—Warren Smith threw two touchdown passes and Maine took advantage of seven turnovers to defeat Hofstra 16-14 on Saturday.
Hofstra outgained Maine 533-311, but couldn’t overcome the turnovers, which led to 10 of Maine’s points.
Smith was 15 of 25 for 189 yards and threw touchdown passes of 5 and 18 yards as the Black Bears (3-3, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) built a 13-0 halftime lead.
Hofstra (3-3, 1-2) cut the lead to 13-7 on Everette Benjamin’s 1-yard run with 8:18 left in the third quarter, but Maine’s Jordan Waxman hit a 28-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 16-7.
The Pride scored with 2:22 remaining on Cory Christopher’s 4-yard pass to Aaron Weaver.
Smith finished with 82 yards on 16 carries.
Miguel Maysonet led Hofstra with 95 yards rushing and Steve Probst rushed for 91 yards.
