WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP)—Willie Carter scored the game’s only touchdown and Howard held on to beat Winston-Salem State 7-3 on Saturday.
Carter, who had seven catches for 116 yards for the Bison (2-2), scored on a 20-yard pass from Willie Haigler in the third quarter. Haigler was 18-for-44 with 193 yards.
Winston-Salem State (0-5) got on the board with 8:45 remaining on a 45-yard field goal by Landen Thayer.
The Rams, which have lost five straight for the first time since 1975, recovered a fumble at the Howard 14 with 3 minutes remaining but could not convert. A bad snap led to a 14-yard loss for Winston-Salem on first down and Howard’s defense registered a sack on second down, leading to the Rams turning the ball over on downs.
Howard had opportunities to pad its lead early, but the Bison missed a field goal and Haigler threw an interception deep in Rams’ territory in the second half.
