Pittsburgh rolls past Buffalo 54-27

Preview | Box Score | Recap

AMHERST, N.Y. (AP)—Bill Stull threw three first-half touchdowns to Dorin Dickerson, and Dion Lewis rushed for 190 yards as Pittsburgh defeated Buffalo 54-27 on Saturday.

Lewis’ had a 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and capped his day with an 85-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Stull was 21-for-30 passing for 172 yards. His longest TD pass was a 23-yarder to Dickerson and Stull scored on a 3-yard rollout, which put Pitt (2-0) up 34-14 before halftime.

Dickerson finished with eight receptions for 71 yards and the three TDs.

Buffalo (1-1), playing its first home game since winning the Mid-American Conference title last season, got four touchdown passes from Zach Maynard, who threw for 400 yards in his home debut as a starter.

Maynard completed 24 of 35 attempts and connected with Naaman Roosevelt on scoring plays of 67 and 54 yards. He also had touchdowns of 24 yards to Jesse Rack and 12 yards to Brandon Thermilus.

But four Buffalo turnovers led to 27 Pittsburgh points. Mario Henry fumbled twice and Maynard lost the ball on a pitch, which Pittsburgh’s Greg Williams returned 50 yards for a score.

Down 40-27 in the fourth, Maynard had the Bulls driving in hopes of a comeback. But on the Pitt 14-yard line on second-and-4, the Panthers’ Adam Gunn sacked Maynard for a 6-yard loss and his next two passes were incomplete.

Maynard also was intercepted late in the fourth quarter by Elijah Fields, who returned the ball to the Buffalo 2. Ray Graham scored on a 2-yard run for Pitt’s final points.

Though Buffalo had 500 yards of total offense, only 67 came on the ground, while the Panthers rushed for 209 yards. Pittsburgh was a perfect 5-for-5 in the red zone, but also had 11 penalties for 119 yards.

    s.lowe99, kudos for your knowledge concerning UB football, but I think there are some very good Buffalo-area recruits that, if they attended UB, would have changed the team's fortunes against BCS foes

    Here's a list of just Buffalo- area guys that did not chose UB, off the top of my head:

    Currently at BCS programs;
    Doug Worthington (Buffalo St Francis) - Starting DL, Ohio State
    Mike Williams (Buffalo Riverside) - Starting WR, Syracuse
    John Urshal (Buffalo Canisius) - Freshman OL, Penn State
    Curtis Underwood (Lackawanna) - RB, NC State
    Adam Rossner (Depew) - OL, Syracuse

    Recently Graduated from BCS programs;
    Dan Gronkowski (Williamsville North) - Started at TE in 2008, Maryland [Drafted by the Lions in 2009]
    Jahuu Caulcrick (Clymer) - RB IN 2008, Mich. State, recently cut by the Jets
    Derek Kinder (Albion) - Started at WR in 2008, Pitt
    Mark Rubin (Amherst) - Started at Safety in 2008, Penn State

    Roosevelt's only FBS offer was UB. Before Gill recruited him, his only offer was New Hampshire. Starks was not heaily recruited either and played DB until Gill came in and switched him to RB. These guys flew under the recruiting radar, UB gave them a shot and Gill's staff developed them into the studs they are now.

    I think today's game is going to be an indication of the type of year UB is going to have. Good passing attack, below average running, and dreadful defense. Zach Maynard has looked good at QB the first 2 games and Namaan Roosevelt is one of the top 8 wr's in college football (it's unfortunate no one knows who he is except nfl scouts). The loss of James Starks, who was a preseason Doak Walker nominee, has made UB pretty much one dimensional on offense as both Thermilius and Henry are simply not in his class as runners and are both turnover prone. Defensively, UB simply does not match up well against other mid major and majors. They are way too small on the DL and LB positions and are in for a long season. As for comment #3 by Phil, I hate to break it to you man but WNY and NY State in general isn't exactly a breeding ground for top tier D1 players. I am still amazed that both Starks and Roosevelt ended up at UB. For UB to make the next step, Gill and Co. need to start recruiting more players from out of state in places like Florida, Texas, Cali, Ohio, and Pennsylvania., They must improve their size up front and overall team speed to be able to compete with teams outside of the MAC.

    This game article is super short. What did the AP writer have to take his kid to martial arts or soccer
    practice? Anyway Pitt puts up 54 points....I can't remember the last time Pitt scored 54, even in the pass happy Walt Harris days. So we might have to go back to the Alex Van Pelt as QB days to match that. The defensive play calling was strange, knowing that Buffalo had to pass since they couldn't run and they were behind by 20 points, they were content to not put much pressure on a first year starting QB ?
    And the D got burned several times on long passes. I am a little concerned since NC State's QB is alot better than this Buffalo QB . Of course this is not to overlook Navy and their Triple Option offense. Perhaps Pitt's D was looking towards stopping that next week and did some reps against that.
    Let's hope that was the case. 2-0 Hail to Pitt !

    Not bad for a sophomore QB in only his second start. UB played a respectable game, and, if not for some really BAD fumbles, the game would've been even more interesting.
    I kinda always liked Wanstadt, but Gill has defintely found a home at UB. Now, if some of the great local high school talent would stick around and play for him, UB could have an impressive team.
    Go Bulls.

    That's the problem...our defense isn't that great. I beleive it is more coaching than the talent as after we went up 40-20, we sat back and barely blitzed. That kid from Buffalo is a great runner and when they rolled him out, he was unstoppable. Our DB's didn't do much and the LB's looked slow. Have to blitz and get pressure on the QB's because they stuffed the run. Navy should be interesting as they almost beat Ohio State. Stull needs to read his progessions too. All the time he was looking at his receiver the entire time. A good DB will read that every play. Either they played to win and slowed down any momentum, or they are just not as good as advertised. Either way, they will need to play tougher in the Big East or it will not be a good outcome.
