Michigan Team Report
INSIDE SLANT
Apparently, when the University of Michigan announced its “All In For Michigan” promotional campaign in mid-August, not everyone signed on. As another disappointing football season came to a close, there were more signs that forces in and around the once-hallowed program are not only lacking the commitment to be considered “all in” but even tugging in the opposite direction.
In his postgame remarks following a 21-10 season-ending defeat by rival Ohio State, Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez addressed publicly for the first time what had been a very active topic behind the shroud—that people inside UM are hoping he fails.
Rodriguez is just 8-16 after two seasons, and went just 1-7 in the Big Ten this year. As he overhauls the program and converts Michigan to the dangerous spread offense he ran so well at West Virginia, inexperience, lack of depth, and not having the right players for the offense have hurt. What hurts more, Rodriguez said, is having to fight internal forces, as well as everything else.
“I just think there’s a faction creating a negative type of environment that wants to create drama and wants to see people pointing fingers,” Rodriguez said. “There’s nobody in that locker room that’s going to point any fingers. Everybody in that locker room is all in.”
Well-placed sources have said repeatedly that some in Michigan’s brie and burgundy crowd have never accepted the choice of Rodriguez to replace the popular and grandfatherly Lloyd Carr, saying Rodriguez was not “a Michigan man” and even sniping about his Appalachian accent.
Rodriguez, 5-7 this season, would not divulge specifics on the campaign of negativity, saying he gets “overtones” and messages from people about it. Senior punter and team captain Zoltan Mesko was not as diplomatic.
“There are people out there who don’t want us to succeed or the coaching staff to succeed,” Mesko said. “I could write a book about it. There are a lot of guys that don’t see what goes on inside the program of how much love there is for the players. It’s a shame they don’t see how close we are to being one of the best programs in the nation.”
Michigan moves on, into a recruiting season that will be vital to Rodriguez having success in his third season, and saving his job. But Wolverines fans are left to wonder if great recruiting and more hard work will be enough to overcome the powerful, nameless entities that are not “all in” and never will be.
NOTES, QUOTES
Game Of The Year: Michigan 38, Notre Dame 34—With only 11 seconds left on the clock, the Wolverines saw freshman QB Tate Forcier, in just his second start of his career, hit senior WR Greg Mathews with a five-yard touchdown pass to give Michigan the win.
The Wolverines ran up 430 yards of offense and improved to 2-0 with the win over No. 18 ranked Notre Dame. Michigan displayed its power running game with 190 rushing yards, led by senior RB Brandon Minor who carried 16 times for 106 yards. Forcier gave Michigan fans plenty of reasons to hope for a huge turnaround in 2009 after the disastrous 3-9 campaign the previous season.
The athletic and gutty young quarterback went 23-of-33 passing for 240 yards and scored three touchdowns—two passing and one carrying the ball.
By beating a ranked team in dramatic, comeback fashion, the euphoria was back in Michigan football. The win over the Irish was part of a 4-0 start that had Ann Arbor awash in optimism.
Player Of The Year: DE Brandon Graham—The senior from Detroit was a standout performer who was unfortunately somewhat disguised on a weak unit. Graham finished the season with 10 sacks, and ranks second all-time at Michigan in tackles for loss with 53. At times, he was virtually un-blockable, and while the defense struggled as a unit, Graham made all-Big Ten plays with regularity.
Fast Forward: Michigan had 18 players make their final appearance in the maize and blue in the season-ending loss to rival Ohio State. Since they are all holdovers from the Lloyd Carr era, many of them do not fit the mold of the type of player needed for the style of play preferred by current UM head coach Rich Rodriguez, but several were major contributors this season.
Without question DE Brandon Graham and P Zoltan Mesko are headed for careers in the professional ranks and thus will leave big holes for Rodriguez to fill. Otherwise, the losses hit hardest along the offensive line, where David Moosman and Mark Ortmann depart.
With an NCAA investigation over alleged violations involving practice time still hanging over his head, Rodriguez pushes on, well aware that Year Three must be markedly different. He will need to improve the raw talent on hand, and recruit well to achieve a winning season and secure a bowl bid, which seem to be the minimum standards for hanging on to his job.
Recruiting Trail: Michigan needs a lot, starting with more of the right parts for its spread offense, and a bunch of help on defense. The UM defense could not stop anyone this season, so the most-pressing need is there.
Rodriguez might have locked up defensive help in the best manner possible—by stealing premier Ohio kids, and thus keeping them away from rival Ohio State. LB Antonio Kinard (6-4, 200) from Youngstown is a speedy and explosive tackler, while DB Courtney Avery (5-11, 170) from Lexington has sprinter’s speed and solid coverage skills.
While Kinard and Avery are just two of the pieces needed to upgrade the UM defense, Michigan looks to diversify and strengthen its offense with homegrown QB Devin Gardner (6-4, 205), and a pair of fast receivers from Ohio—Jerald Robinson (6-2, 180) and D.J. Williamson.
Quote To Note: “It’s a very, very competitive profession, but there’s nobody on our staff, and I don’t think there’s anybody at the university, that is daunted by the challenge.”—Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
Players To Watch In 2010:
QB Tate Forcier—The freshman had a rough end to his baptismal season, throwing four interceptions against Ohio State, but he vowed to come back stronger and more prepared in 2010. Forcier started all 12 games for UM, passing for 2,050 yards and 13 touchdowns.
QB Denard Robinson—The speedy second option for Michigan proved to be a valuable weapon running from the shotgun. Robinson had 351 rushing yards in a limited role, averaging over five yards per carry and scoring five touchdowns.
RB Vincent Smith—Michigan has big plans for the Florida product, who was pressed into service in 2009 when injuries culled a couple of veterans from the lineup. Smith moves into the lead role at running back for 2010.
WR/KR Daryl Stonum—The sophomore was one of Michigan’s best field position weapons as he set the Michigan single-season records for kick returns (39) and kick-return yardage (1,001). Stonum takes on a bigger role in the passing game for 2010.
Pro Prospects:
• P Zoltan Mesko is a semifinalist for the Ray Guy award for a second straight year after leading the Big Ten in punting and ranking sixth nationally with a 45-yard average. Mesko has the distance and hang-time to excel in the pro game. He had 15 punts over 50 yards, 15 for fair catches and 13 downed inside the opposition’s 20-yard line. He has punted 43 times for 1,934 yards, including a 66-yard season long punt against Western Michigan
• DE Brandon Graham is projected to go in the first two rounds of the NFL draft, even though his future in the pro ranks might be as a rush linebacker instead of as a down lineman. Graham has the speed and quickness to be a major disruptive force and shed blockers. In his Michigan finale, he had four tackles for loss against Ohio State to end the year with a Big Ten best 25.
Roster Report:
• OL David Molk missed most of the season due to injuries, with a knee injury doing the most damage. He is undergoing rehab and is expected to see limited contact in spring, but be ready at 100 percent for fall camp.
• LB Jonas Mouton inherits the role as the leader of the UM defense, and his strong 11-tackle performance against Ohio State only enhances a solid resume.
• QB Denard Robinson is surrounded by rumors that he might seek a transfer, since Robinson lost out to fellow freshman Tate Forcier in the duel for the starting job. Robinson might be the fastest player in college football, but his one-dimensional skills make it tough to find a regular role.
• WR Roy Roundtree came on late in the season and posted two 100-yard receiving games, and will assume the role as Michigan’s go-to guy on the outside. As the spread offense gets more and more tuned in, Michigan will find creative ways to get the ball in the hands of its best athletes, like Roundtree.

Rich Rod and Greg Robinson can only do so much. RR has lost enough games because of his stupid play calling but give him one more year. Putting in Denard for the last drive against Iowa lost that game. Letting Tate throw on the first possesion which turned into the strip 6 and allowing him to throw on second and 5 for the interception in the end zone where terrible mistakes by RR. He needs to learn that these are freshman and will make mistakes.
Fans you need to give him one more year and hope that he gets it turned around. Support the players and coaches until then. If he does not win 7 games then he goes.

Michigan has dropped so low so fast, Bo himself couldn't restore it's pride, pride comes from wins and the fear seen on the face of your oponet every saturday.. We have schools lol at us, while we stumble to come up with excuses as to why RR should stay... Point blank, if 1-7 and 2-6 or as I like to add them 3-13 over the last 2 years is OK with the Admin at The U of M, then the entire group should be thrown out....
Hey RR, what's your excuse gonna be next year, when you go maby 6-6, you gonna bench 2 SO's QB's to start another Fr ?? I can't wait to hear it, By the way do we have any RB's going the team?? I mean any that way more than 195lbs?? Sure hope they enjoy trying to play the d-line of Wisc, OSU, MSU PSU or Iowa next year...
OK one good note, Michigan your D was very solid this last saturday, great work, ??? Where you been??? Also to Tait whateveryournameis, it is ok to 1. secure the football in the ready to throw or the tuck position.. 2. some time just throw the ball away when your reciever is double or triple teamed, and 3rd just run it the 10 yards that is open right in front of you... and lastly, please unless only you man is wide open and no one anywhere near him should you ever try to throw the ball all the way accross the field, esp when you are running in the other direction. I understand you coach never taught you these 4 keys, so I'm trying to teach them to you now, alright then...
Also coach in shoestrings is such a fast runner, how about using him as a decoy on an end around, or reverse, with 2 qb's in the back field... Seems like a good coach could have come up with a game plan....

1st and goal and we can't punch the ball in, we have to try to pass it to score, how about we just score.. Ok spread the D I got it good idea, now run it in, use a screen pass, how about a sweep with the wr's blocking the DB's. Nope we got to try some RR B/S. Yep another Interseption, trying to throw the ball accross the entire field... U c coach the reason others don't play this style is it constantly places the ball in danger of being taken away by the other team...
RR should go, why?? 2-6 n 1-7 in the big ten, forgetting all other stats can anyone remember a Michigan team at anytime that was that bad??? I look at 58 fr n 32 so's on this team, we have a RB that is 5-9 and weight's 170lbs, come on really... 170lbs, unless he runs the 40 in 3.9, he'll get killed the first time he plays... RR one of your kids?? yep, how about OL at 278 and 280lbs, ok now I understand why we can't run the ball on 1st and goal, PSU and OSU d-lines outweight us.. I see a DE at 6-5 great, but he weight's 223lbs, come on half the RB's in the big ten well run him over, damnit what part of RR's brain is so damaged he doesn't get it... We have to compete against smashmouth football teams in conference, this spread b/s is fun to watch, but I say it won't win d@ck, in big ten country....
Truely would we have allowed Carr to stay or Mo, if there record was 2-6 n 1-7 against Big Ten teams?? Would we??? Then why the hell is it different for RR, why?? He has zero understanding of these systems, 2 years under his belt, n I still don't see any passion towards beatting the crap out of OSU... Listen I want a coach that says, here's the date Michigan n OSU play next year and we will beat them at the shoe, mark my words, the U of M over OSU period... I don't see that in this man, I see someone whose ego is bigger than his ability to coach... OK some of you are upset with me, fine I got it, just win, that's it win, let's not talk history lets make history win the football game....
N Tom, I hear you, but shouldn't we at least compete in big ten games... I mean 25pt spread against 2 teams. That's not one or two plays, thats a problem with the coaches system...
Again, someone give me reason why 2-6 n 1-7 in conference is good enough to keep your job.... anyone, got it, that's what I thought, I can't hear you ttttooommm, 1-7.. way to go coach....

Know why everyone hates Michigan so much? Cause the fans are all a bunch of arrogant cry baby whiners who are pathetic when their team isn't winning. They think that they own some birth right to be better than everyone else just because they wear a blue and yellow shirt when 95% of them have never went to the school or played for the team. And when their team is down, all they can say is "we have the most wins in college football history". You know who says that kind of crap? Losers! I love Michigan and I support the school and all the teams but the more and more I read from these so called Michigan fans, the more embarrassed I get.

There were 2 types of fans there for the Michigan game. The Michigan fair weather fans that were too busy texting during the game or the fans that were screaming for their team and willing them to score but they were all wearing red and grey.
What made me want to walk out of the game (like all the losers that left with 10-12 minutes left) was when the sea of red started doing that @#$%ot O-H-I-O chant and it was way louder than Hail to the Victors.
This is almost all due to the fact that Michigan fans are all a bunch of spoiled cry babies and most of them sold their tickets to Ohio State fans online because they're too pathetic to go and support their team.
You all want to ride Les Miles, Brian Kelly, and Jim Harbough's jocks then get rid of your maize and blue and go cheer for their teams. I don't think I going to another game in Ann Arbor for a while, I'm just going to go to away games so I can at least hang with the real Michigan fans.
Seriously, back in August, did you really think Michigan was good enough to be a national contender again or even in the big ten. Nope, everyone predicted 6-6 or 7-5. Well, they're only 1 or 2 games off of that but those kids have to be dragged through the dirt by you jerks because they don't meet your expectations. Get over it. It's a good thing those kids play for their teammates and their coaches because, after witnessing the so called "fan base" on Saturday, I wouldn't care about the fans that don't care about me.
Really funny thing is I'm predicting Michigan is going to go at least 9-3 last season. I'll say it right now. And when they do, I'm sure you'll all be your die hard Michigan fans again. You all suck.

I'm not the world's biggest Rich Rod fan either, but he is Michigan's coach, he will be Michigan's coach next year, so we may as well stop the crying. This is what happens when you have mostly freshman and sophomores on your roster. This is what happens when you take big, slow players(who were recruited by Coach Carr) and try to make them run a new, faster system. If RR had anything to do with the defense, then I may feel differently. But we have had 4 DC's in 4 years, so maybe we should give this one a chance? I'm still going to be patient. I'll admit, it is getting harder and harder to be patient with every loss, but let's be straight...Michigan football fans have been spoiled for a very long time! No other team in the country can boast as much. I remember when Ohio St., USC, and Florida weren't the elite. I remember their "down years". We haven't had many of those here in Michigan. It won't be long until we're on top of the Big Ten once again. It won't be long until we're on top of the college football world again...which is more than Notre Dame, Miami, Florida State, or Nebraska (who have been reloading, rebuilding, retooling, etc. for years) I still feel lucky to have seen some great football here for a long time. There's plenty more to come. LET'S GO BLUE!!!
It's great...to be...a Mi-chi-gan Wolv-e-rine, It's great...to be...a Mi-chi-gan Wolv-e-rine, It's great...to be...a Mi-chi-gan Wolv-e-rine!!! It's great...to be...a Mi-chi-gan Wolv-e-rine!!! Beat the Bucks! Go Blue!

I feel sad to break it to ya, but a good coach adjusts his style or system to the players he has, a great coach utilizes those talents to beat stronger teams. I hear ya, he doesn't have his players yet, I understand however what he also doesn't have is the ability to adjust his system to the Big 10.
At what point due you say this doesn't work, I have to adjust.. or can't he do that, look we have a 17 point lead in a game and we go 3 and out punt, 3 n out punt, fumble, 3 and out punt, interseption. and the clock moves only 8 min's. Thank god the other team ran the ball otherwise it wouldn't have moved at all...
Face it, he's a weak coach that had a couple of gifted players in a weak conference so they won a few games... That doesn't make him a great or even a good coach..
Let's compair this to Standfords caoch, a team that was weak when he arrived, that has developed a strong confidence under sound football play. Can you say the same thing about this Michigan team now, YOU CAN'T... If this ship isn't corrected right away it will hurt Michigan not just last year, this year ,but for the next 3-5 years to come... MSU, WSC, OSU, n PSU will gobble up all the strong players for years, and we'll become the new and improved illi football team north, otherwise named the U of M...
Think I'm wrong ask Zook how easy it is to win in the Big ten, with those strong fast little guys...
Coach RR listen, you have a system that's fun to watch, however this system put's the ball all over the place with too many possibilities of mistakes, slips trips and falls.. That will never work up north, the big ten is smash mouth football, that little RB that weight's 195 will get killed, or as you see worn out. Also if you don't practice against smashmouth football you D-line will never be strong enough to stop it when it see's it... Why is this so difficult to understand, really r u just stupid or what?? Bye the way how many National Championships has a RR team's won?? I mean his system is sooo great, right, so how many??? yep that's what I thought.... I hear you, the fat lady is singing, n it's not Hail to the Victors, plz fix this mess NOW...
