Iowa Hawkeyes

10-2 (6-2), 2nd Big Ten

Iowa Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Kirk Ferentz has never openly campaigned for a spot in the BCS, so he’s not about to start. But he doesn’t mind pointing out a few facts.

Iowa’s 12-0 win against Minnesota in the regular-season finale was the Hawkeyes’ 10th victory of the season. Even in the anemic Big Ten, Ferentz believes that should count for something.

“To win 10 games in any conference is significant,” Ferentz said. “To play the way we played this year, we’re seven points and three points away from having a perfect year. That’s something I’d point out, too.”

Iowa lost to Northwestern by a touchdown when quarterback Ricky Stanzi was injured, then lost at Ohio State by a field goal.

The Hawkeyes have battled injuries since before the season started, when starting tailback Jewel Hampton was lost for the year with torn knee ligaments. Injuries to key players on both sides of the ball ensued, but the Hawkeyes continued finding ways to win. The end result was Ferentz’s fourth 10-win season, and the third time Iowa did it in the regular season. Now it will await its fate—either as an at-large in the BCS or a Capital One Bowl appearance against an SEC team in Orlando, Fla.

“For us to win 10 games this season, with all the things that we’ve faced,” Ferentz said, “it’s just absolutely amazing.”

NOTES, QUOTES

Scouting The Offense:   Freshman QB James Vandenberg played well in replacing Ricky Stanzi, but Iowa fans have to hope his time as the starter is over. Vandenberg has a strong arm and showed nice mobility at times, but Stanzi has shown a knack of delivering big plays—particularly in the fourth quarter. He is the leader of an offense that has sputtered without him. Stanzi’s return brings TE Tony Moeaki back in play, as well as WR Marvin McNutt. Stanzi and McNutt seemed to be developing some chemistry before the injury. Stanzi also opens up the running game. Without him, defenders stacked the box to slow Iowa freshmen tailbacks Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher.

Scouting The Defense:   The Hawkeyes are 10th in the nation in rushing defense and 11th in points allowed. DE Adrian Clayborn is one of the best and most underrated pass rushers in the country. LB Pat Angerer is always around the ball and S Tyler Sash is the big playmaker in the secondary. That’s one star on every level of the defense, and that’s a good way to have a great defense.

Quote To Note:   “Iowa is definitely on our short list. We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t think so.”—Larry Gautier, a representative from the Orange Bowl committee, in the Dubuque (Iowa) Telegraph Herald.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Next Game:   Bowl game, TBD—Iowa’s hopes for a BCS bid appear to be on life support, but still beating. The Hawkeyes are hindered by the Big Ten’s reputation and the fact they didn’t earn a share of the league’s title. It would benefit the Big Ten’s image to have Iowa slide down to the Capital One Bowl, and in essence have all the other Big Ten teams slide down a notch in the bowl’s pecking order. Perhaps that arrangement would give the conference a better shot to improve on last season’s dismal showing, when it won just one bowl game. If Iowa moves into the BCS, it’s at least another $10 million for the conference, but it forces everyone else up a notch the bowl food chain and could result in the league’s middle- and low-tier teams being fed to the wolves.

Players To Watch:

• QB Ricky Stanzi—Kirk Ferentz is hopeful the time off will heal Stanzi’s high ankle sprain, allowing him to practice and play in a bowl game. His stats can be hideous, but Stanzi is the clear leader of the offense.

• LB Pat Angerer—Ended the regular season with a team-high 135 tackles. Should he just meet his season average of 11 tackles in the bowl game, he’ll finish third for the most tackles in a single season.

• TE Tony Moeaki—Stanzi’s security blanket has disappeared from the offense since Stanzi left with the ankle injury. Moeaki had just three catches in the final three games. After his six-catch, 105-yard day against Michigan in early October, Moeaki became more difficult to find in the offense. He can pose matchup nightmares for defenses, particularly those not familiar with Iowa’s offense.

Roster Report:

• RB Adam Robinson left Iowa’s season finale against Minnesota in the first half after re-injuring his sore left ankle and did not return. The offense, as a result, shut down. Robinson is crucial to Iowa’s success, and hopefully with a month off, he’ll be healthy and ready for bowl season.

• QB Ricky Stanzi missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain, but he is expected back for the bowl game.

• LB Jeremiha Hunter and Jeff Tarpinian dressed and went through pregame drills in the finale, but neither played. Hunter is a key to Iowa’s defense and should be back for the bowl game.

First this team has more heart then I have seen from any team this year.... I hope they can draw TCU or Boise State....... With a few good weeks of solid rest, this team is going to come out looking to do a little shake and bake! And how about the 7 first team big team honors...

Great season hawks, finish strong and shut some mouths,....I hate to say this but I can not wait to see what next years team brings, they should be out $%^&ing standing!!

Things look great in Iowa City. Stanzi is on the mend and may very well be ready for the Bowl game. If not then a talented and quickly improving QB named Vandenberg is showing us a promise of a great career at Iowa. Last Saturday he did the smart thing and played well enough to win and did not press beyond his present ability, and did not lose the game. The Defense stepped up and we got a win. The Hawkeyes are still a young team with most coming back next year. Last year 12 points kept the Hawkeyes from going 12-0. This year 10 points was the difference in the 2 losses. Next year looks very, very promising. Stanzi is not ready for a shot at the Pro's and has unfinished business in the BIG 10. He will be better then ever. Next year I expect he will get an early lead in games and give Vandenberg lots of 2nd half playing time............... Niceeeeeeeeeeeee! Iowa football should be a top performing team for several years. If you are a HS recruit interested in playing for a winner chose IOWA balck & gold. Roses would have smelled lovely but Oranges taste sweet too. ; o )))))))

And by the way, Vandenberg and the rest of the offense looked like @#$% against Minnesota! Where was Moeaki? Where was McNutt? But what the hell, a win is a win. Even though i was extremely embarrassed by the offensive play against a horrible Minnesota team.

Whoah Noah! Michael may be misguided and more than a little bit silly and ignorant, but i'm assuming he is one of the few Iowa State fans that doesn't suck guys off! Good luck in whatever tiny bowl 6-6 teams go to, Mike!

I see the Pac 10 power house of Oregon just slide by Arizona in two over times. Hummm, didn't Iowa spank Arizona without an over time, by 10 points? Guess Iowa wasn;t such a lucky team after all, lol.

In the home-stretch and it is IOWA 9-2 playing at home against a struggling Minneota team who has to still be smarting from a tough loss to the Hawkeyes last year in the old Metrodome. Just the thing to fire a team up and try to finish on a positive note. However I doubt Coach Ferentz and the Hawkeyes will get caught napping. Yes the Hawks are a much different team without QB Stanzi in uniform but the young QB Vandenberg showed poise and confidence in last weeks game, delivering more then most of us expected but what we had hoped for. His preformance last week gives us a glimpse at a bright future for the Iowa Hawkeyes. This week if the Iowa defense stands up and does what it has done most of the season and Vandenberg remains steady and patient we should get the "W". 10-2 or 9-3 either way is a fine season for any D1 team. Injuries happen and they do hurt but still a great season and the promise of a trip to Florida in January. How many BIG 10 teams will get Bowl invites? 5 for sure, 6 if Michigan State beats PSU at home and Minnesota at 6-6 might get a nod. Send the Gpophers some where just so those guys can get some warm sun in January. GOPHER FANS, YOU HAVE TO STAND UP AND BUY THOSE TICKETS OR YOU WILL NOT GET AN INVITE. THINK SUNSHINE, WARM WHITE SANDY BEACHES, EMERALD GREEN WATERS AND A COLD MARGAHRITA.

Nate C, you are not a college football fan... you are someone who jumps on and off band wagons. Saying that iowa would get destroyed in the pac ten, just makes no sense... we beat arizona, who is still in the running for the pac ten title. Also we should have beat ohio state, so does that mean ohio state is going to get destroyed as well????? Also does a mediocre team lead d 1 in interceptions???? o those are probably all luck to... what team do you like..... o wait i bet its florida, or maybe alabama... get off boards where you dont belong....

    To the haters:

How is a QB that rallies from behind to win games worthless? You must not understand the fundamental goal of playing an opposing team. However, if it's not obvious enough, I'll gladly tell you -- the object is to win, even if you've played badly. Those are in fact, the most satisfying wins -- teamwork in SPITE of adversity.

So we wish you the best with your interception wagers and all the other irrelevant criteria that have nothing to do with the games or the teams. Especially when you consider how much better all the other teams' skill players are (your opinions, with which I agree), IA's lack of depth at skill positions (we're not Illinois or Mich St or whoever), you should come to the conclusion that this team of overachievers, with good fortune and favorable rolls, etc., is an exceptional TEAM.

Stanzi might not have a gun or exhibit the best judgment, but his poise is unparalleled. It doesn't matter if you've got wheels like Michael Vick or a gun like Dan Marino, if you can't keep your composure. That's Stanzi's true talent. If you like the objectivity to see that, who really cares what your opinion is? It's just emotional tribal identification.

Please Nate C......get over yourself. Iowa was the beneficiary of a few calls this year.....like any team. They also got shafted on a few calls that should have gone their way. In the end it all evens out. Sorry, but mediocre teams don't win nine games and as far as luck goes, you make your own luck. Good teams make plays to win games and that was what they did in their close wins. No shame in that. If it's embarrassing for the Big 10 what "would" happen to Iowa in the Rose Bowl, what do you call what happened to OSU in two of the last three national title games? Sorry, but your opinion of what "might" happen is meaningless.

Finally this mediocre team is shown for what it really is, a mediocre team that had extraordinary luck, mixed with a LOT of calls that went their way. Face it Iowa, for the good of the Big Ten it’s important that you’re not allowed to go to the Rose Bowl. The beating would be extremely embarrassing not only for you but the entire Big Ten. Better to send a team that can keep up like Ohio State then send a team that should have (and would have had it not been for some very suspect calls) lost half the games they played this season.

Congrats to both teams. College football is often a game full of mistakes. So what. Both teams played well. Everyone was glued to their tv until the last minute. I think it was one of if not the most exciting game on Saturday. Lots of drama, lots of big plays, some suprizes and as they said on ABC's Widw world of Sports: "The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat". Hey, Iowa stepped up their game and never quit. OSU did not "SMOKE the Hawks" like some predicted. Iowa did everything but win and OSU managed to survive a scare. IOWA vs OSU...........it beats watching the Pro's on Sunday. Go HAWKS! Go BIG 10!!!

Actually, Vandenberg looked decent for being thrown to the lions like that. You can really only hang the 2 picks on him because that OT hail mary was going to be picked anyway. Heckuva better QB than Stanzi..he should wax Minnesota next week, so 10-2 is doable, providing Iowa's receivers hold on to the ball.

And Tex, you might want to look at Iowa's history with QB's under Ferentz. It hasn't been pretty...mediocrity most of the way. And while you can have a top 5 running game and defense, a mediocre QB isn't going to get you to the promised land. Vandenburg is and always has been the better QB this year. If you think your 15-interception scrub should be the starter, then you're not playing with a full deck. Oh wait, he's not!

Go Vandenberg! 5 TD's against the GoHomes next week and ol' Ricky Bobby can ride the pine when Iowa goes bowling.

michael, who claims to know everything about college football (see post 73) clearly does not understand the Rivals rating system. The number of stars awarded to recruits does not indicate skill level, it is a measure of Division 1 (D1) readiness. Thus a 5 star recruit is deemed likely to make an immediate impact, whereas 2 and 3 star recruits (which make up the VAST majority of Iowa's roster) are predicted to not be quite ready for D1 play, as they require practice with a college team, and some play during "trash time" before they are ready. So "parking" these freshman like michael is whining about is actually the intelligent thing to do in order for these players to develop properly. Maybe someone who actually knows a little bit about football would realize that.

Wow a yahoo article who even admits to the questionable calls. I'm just glad the Hawks had class when it came to not calling out the officials there are only so many plays that are questionable its up to the team to get it done the rest of the plays. Though it stands to wonder that after our RB had such a tremendous play they stayed away from the running game so much. I know that they were behind but they still had plenty of time. Though then again it always goes back to my question of why a coach would call a naked boot in the end zone when we have such a great punter and a 10 point lead. The hawks shot themselves in the foot on this one. Though would have been nice to get that run since there really wasn't holding on that play, but oh well on to the next game and concentrating on hopefully beating OSU. Just remember (especially this season) anything is possible.

    Playoff?

Keep the BCS. Use it to seed the top 8 teams for a playoff.

    Everyone is happy.

There was a huge article about it last year, laying out the potential money the NCAA would pull in from an 8 team playoff or even a 4 team playoff. The numbers were astronomical. So why don't we have it? Because of 2 or 3 conference that do no believe in letting the BCS busters like Boise State, Cincy, TCU, Utah, etc, have a shot.

It'll happen eventually. The sooner, the better.

As far as the game goes, yep...it shut the homers up. Finally. I never wish injury no any player and I hope Stanzi bounces back and is not hurt too seriously. But my point was, when you are early in the season, you play those freshman studs so when THIS happens, they aren't coming in like a glassy eyed doe. It's the only knock anyone has ever had against Ferentz and this was probably the biggest hit he's taken about it.

And yes, Vandenburg is a stud. He set most Iowa high school records at Keokuk in his four year there, came in as a very highly touted QB. He should have been starting behind center a lot earlier this year. And next week, he gets Ohio State, who will be coming at him with BBQ sauce and paper bibs.

    9-3 anyone?
