Illinois Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

With a ninth-place Big Ten finish already in the bag—and a bowl berth out of the question—Illinois continues the longest regular season in school history with Friday’s game at No. 5 Cincinnati before finishing with the Dec. 5 home game against Fresno State.

After taking Thursday through Saturday off during their bye week, the Illini began to tackle the Bearcats on Sunday. Coach Ron Zook claimed his team is treating these last two weeks like bowl practices—which suggests they’ll get their reserves lots of work in preparation for the 2010 season—but Zook didn’t mean bowl practices in the traditional sense. He plans to get his veterans their usual work and keep them in their usual roles.

What does that mean? Senior Juice Williams, if his ailing left ankle is OK, will regain the starting quarterback job from redshirt freshman Jacob Charest.

“I think we owe it to these seniors to do whatever we can do to win these next two games,” Zook said. “Obviously we’re going to play the guys we feel give us the best opportunity to win. When Juice can go, Juice is going to go.”

Illinois’ best use of its time might be to put its secondary under all types of pressure. Cincinnati’s passing attack ranks No. 7 nationally in yardage and No. 1 in passing efficiency, which could be a problem considering Northwestern just riddled the Illini for 305 yards and a touchdown. Illinois’ secondary has been in flux much of the year as senior safety Donsay Hardeman has missed the equivalent of three games with a neck problem, junior safety Garrett Edwards has missed a game or two with a neck injury and sophomore cornerback Tavon Wilson’s inexperience has been exploited.

Zook hopes undefeated Cincinnati’s status will encourage his Illini—at every position—to try to rise to the Bearcats’ level.

“They’ve got an opportunity to play an awfully good football team and still make a name for themselves,” Zook said. “Let’s see if we can be what we thought we could be.”

NOTES, QUOTES

• Illinois’ awkward 2009 schedule has drawn criticism from several corners, but its peculiar finish with two non-conference games after Thanksgiving can be attributed to factors both in and out of the school’s control. The Illini were stuck with the final-week bye on the Big Ten schedule. Coach Ron Zook initially scheduled Fresno State for Nov. 21, but moved the game back to Dec. 5 once he realized the Illini would be playing on short rest at Cincinnati on Friday (while the Bearcats would be coming off a bye week).

Illinois could have avoided that whole rigamarole by scheduling a non-conference game on Sept. 19, but Zook preferred to have a bye going into the team’s Big Ten conference opener at Ohio State. Zook does say there’s a plan in effect. “The whole thing here that we’re trying to get done,” Zook said in the Daily Herald, “is we’re trying to get 7 or 8 home games in this stadium. To do that, sometimes you maybe have to do some things that you’d rather not do. The schedule is what it is. You’ve never heard me complain about the schedule. It’s just the way it is and we’ve got to play it, you know?”

• Illinois’ offensive line, which includes true sophomore Jeff Allen at left tackle and true freshman Hugh Thornton at right tackle, will be tested by a Cincinnati defense that ranks third nationally with 3.2 sacks per game. It’s not a good matchup for the Illini as they rank 103rd nationally with 2.8 sacks allowed per week.

Series History:   First meeting

Scouting The Offense:   Illinois’ spread-option offense averages a Big Ten-worst 20.2 points per game, though it has been a little better in recent weeks. Senior QB Juice Williams figures to make his 43rd career start, but redshirt freshman Jacob Charest should make an appearance. After a sluggish beginning when he made his first career start on Nov. 14 against Northwestern, Charest led the Illini to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Illinois boasts two tackle-busting runners in sophomores Mikel Leshoure and Jason Ford and several potentially game-breaking receivers, though those receivers (including Arrelious Benn) don’t seem to get as many touches as everyone would like.

Scouting The Defense:   Illinois has one of the most generous defenses in the nation, especially through the air. That’s not a good sign when the Illini are facing the nation’s No. 7 passing attack in Cincinnati. Most opponents choose to pick on sophomore CB Tavon Wilson, though they also like the way Illinois’ safeties stay in the middle of the field. Northwestern was among the teams that found big yardage throwing to the deep corners. To prevent this scavenging, Illinois needs its blue-chip defensive line (including DE Clay Nurse, DT Josh Brent and DT Corey Liuget) to get after Tony Pike.

Quote To Note:   “The whole idea is this would be a great time to stay focused on what we had to do and get better.”—Illinois coach Ron Zook telling Gatehouse Media about the team’s practice strategy for the final two weeks of the 2009 season.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

This Week  ‘S GAME: Illinois at Cincinnati, Nov. 27—Nothing can salvage a 2009 season that was supposed to end in a bowl, but the Illini would feel better about themselves if they shocked the undefeated and fifth-ranked Bearcats in the first meeting between these schools. Both teams will be operating on two weeks’ rest, so you’d like to think Illinois would be ready to bring its best effort.

Keys To The Game:   Illinois ranks ninth in the Big Ten and 85th in the nation in pass-efficiency defense. Cincinnati, especially with QB Tony Pike healthy again, boasts one of the nation’s top five passing offenses. Moreover, the Bearcats rank among the nation’s top 10 teams in fewest sacks allowed. This suggests Illinois’ linebackers and secondary are going to have to bring their finest effort of the year in order to keep the Illini in the game.

Players To Watch:

QB Juice Williams—After missing a game for the first time in his career on Nov. 14 against Northwestern, Williams is on target to make his 43rd career start on Friday against Cincinnati. Williams hasn’t been too good this year (102 for 177, 1,139 yards, 6 TDs, 5 INTs), but he was enjoying a fine run against Michigan and Minnesota before injuring his left ankle.

WR Arrelious Benn—While the junior told the Chicago Tribune he won’t decide whether to declare for the NFL draft until after the season ends, Benn still looks like an obvious early-entry despite his modest statistics this year. Injuries and Illinois’ inconsistent passing game have led to just 33 catches for 370 yards and 1 TD.

RG Jon Asamoah—The senior has zoomed up the NFL draft charts despite Illinois’ uneven season. Most draft web sites suggest the 6-foot-5, 315-pound Asamoah will go no later than the second round. The Cincinnati game will mark his 36th consecutive start. After the season, scouts will get a look at him at the East-West Shrine Game.

Roster Report:

• QB Juice Williams (left ankle sprain) didn’t play on Nov. 14 against Northwestern, but Ron Zook expects him to make his 43rd career start at Cincinnati.

• WR Arrelious Benn continues to play despite injuries all over his body. In Zook’s words, Benn has “dinged” his head twice this month. He also has been fighting shoulder and ankle issues.

• TE Michael Hoomanawanui (high ankle sprain) hasn’t played in three weeks even though Zook says each week that he’s confident “Uh-Oh” will play. Perhaps with the bye week, Hoomanawanui can get into the mix on Friday. He’s an important player as judged by his recent acceptance of an East-West Shrine Game bid.

• TE Hubie Graham has missed the last three games as well, but a family funeral explained his more recent absences. It seems like the sophomore should be able to play.

• S Donsay Hardeman tweaked his neck against Northwestern on Nov. 14. Zook said X-rays were negative, so Hardeman might be back on the field for Cincinnati. Zook will be careful with the senior, though, as Hardeman missed two games earlier this year with a neck problem and underwent offseason surgery.

• MLB Martez Wilson (neck) and CB Miami Thomas (knee) are out for the rest of the year after undergoing surgery.

Terry Hawthorne deserves the Game Ball for this past Saturday win against Michigan. I believe that without the spark his extraordinary effort provided, the Illini would have continued to play uninspired football and lose to Michigan. Hawthorne's play inspired the defense to hold Michigan back from 4 tries at the 1 yard line and the offense to spring to life and score 3 touchdowns. Inspiration, motivation and perseverance are what have been lacking through most of the season. It took a heroic effort from Terry Hawthorne to fire up his teammates and get them to deliver 100%

i don't think you need to fire Coach Zook yes the team offense hasn't come together and the defense is young but the Illini has talent. Zook has did a wonderful job in recruiting now its time for him to start coaching that talent. Illinois could be a powerhouse with the players they have and the players coming in don't give up on them yet. Coach had to bring the talent in now since he got it he has to start doing something with it.

Talk about a momentum changer . . after Charest drove the Illini down deep into the red zone, completing some key passes along the way, Coach Zook inexplicably put Juice into the game to replace Charest and wouldn't you know it the drive stalled and the Illini were kept out of the end zone. I believe Charest had it going and would have lead them to a TD. The team were hoping he could provide the spark and he was getting it done in the first time he's played in two years no less. But with Juice back in there the spark rapidly vanished . . the offense momentum was broken with Charest out.

This is classic Illini football. They had there one fluk team for the decade. What good is firing Zook going to do. all but 2 of the last nine have been fired, that spans clear back nearly 60 years. So that hasn't worked well. You could do what I did, move to Fl. where there' s good football.

I just finished watching the Indiana game. It was on ESPN2 for some reason. It was a continuation
of a poor display of every part of the game. This coaching staff has really lost the handle. I see a 1-10 season. There isn't anyone on the schedule that can't beat this team. From what I've seen the best game plan is show up and the Illini will beat themselves. Looks like another coaching
change will be in order. There's been 9 or 10 Coaches in my life time and only 2 had winning records. That kind of says it all right there.

Illinois and Guenther has no ability at choosing a coach. Just look at what they have had for a long many years. It's pathetic and embarrassing to say" I'm from Illinois". ask this....why did Zook get fired from his last job?

Fire ZOOK now! He has proven he can't coach. Recruiting and working hard is not enough. Any decent coach would have been able to generate an offense with the offensive weapons Illinois has at their disposal. That new offensive coach from TCU is a BIG step backwards from Locksley and has demonstrated his play calling is woefully awful. He should be reassigned immediately as he absolutely doesn't have a clue how to harness the thoroughbreds he has on offense. Stop sticking with Juice! He has lost it totally this year and is not even close to the level he was even 2 years ago. McGee can't handle the pressure either. Give Charest a chance or stick in the K.C. Freshman. Charest might at least give the Illini a chance with his passing (better than Juice or Eddie) and at least as good as QB's from Indiana & Iowa

I heard the other day that Illinois is having trouble putting a schedule together for next season. They are looking for a bad high school team they can beat. Ron Zook has been coast to coast looking for one and , he cant find any high school team they can beat...... Illinois football does not even make the grade for the Pathetic rating ...... You just dont get any worse than that. The athletic director should GO, Ron Zook should Go,all Zooks staff should Go, Scrap Illinois football program and , start over from ground up........ I think thats the only hope Illinois fans have......They are worse than Pathetic!!!!!!

From what I saw, Juice doesn't make the decisions a senior QB should make. Granted, he hasn't had a lot of time, but enough time to not make so many basic mistakes. It's horrible. He has no touch on his ball. They should just install the Wildcat offense, and forget about passing this year. Ron Zook is supposed to be such a fantastic recruiter. Where's the next QB? It's not McGee.

Tough schedule that will test their mental toughness. If they don't break early they'll be much stronger. Juice shows more mature decision-making. He needs to work both aspects of his game to get comfortable & productive. Play to their strengths (the run) yes, but they need some good passing to open that up...& the offense needs to hold onto the ball more consistently. I think the defense will be better than advertised. Still hard to tell how the new coaches will impact strategies, tactics & the team's performance. I remain cautiously optimistic about the prospects for my Illini this season.

Benn had 0 catches..I thought he was supposed to be..well damn good. And seriously, give up on the Williams hate. He is a great athlete who gives the team the best chance to win. What are you going to start McGee? Seriously, every pass he throws wabbles the whole way..I've never seen a spiral out of him. Juice will lead this team to a winning season..

I agree we can't give up just yet... but it's hard to think positive with the schedule they have saddled this team with. Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State to start off the season, then 2 non-conference solid opponents in Cincinnati and Fresno State to end the season... We've got to take at least 1 of those games to finish with a winning season, and we'd have to win all the games in between those if we were just to get bowl eligible. I agree that we need to work around the strengths of our offense. We need to stretch the field early, and then bang the ball with our running attack. Hopefully Ford is emerging as a go-to back and we will see him turn into a guy we can rely on like we could with Mendenhall. That will take pressure off Juice, open up the passing game, and get us back to the style of play that helped us get to the Rose Bowl... but I'm not getting my hopes up, this schedule is a monster and obviously our defense hasn't made enough of an improvement to handle strong offenses. Bummer, I hope the Illini can prove me wrong this year!

all you guys are idiots i mean honestly i went to the illinois missouri game and they are good. missouri's defense is very good this year and illinois lost alot of there secondary from last year. how about you give them a freakin break! the year we wnt to the eose bolw we lost to missouri so all you people that give up on the year aren't true fans all that you do is say how bad they are when they lose but once they win you decide to like them. whoever the idiot was tlkaing about benching juice you dont no anything about sports.juice is a very good player but how would you like it if you were the starting quarterback for the U of I and everytime you made a mistake the fans yelled at you? you have no idea what that is like so just stop talking trash. people that talk trash usually suck at the sport and think they no everything. if you knew everything about football why dont you coach then? just stop talking bad about our team this year of go be an ohio state fan you worthless waste of life.

Juice just needs to throw a few deep balls in the beginning of the game to back up the defensive backs then hand the ball off. I'm sick of Illinois' horizontal game, maybe if we started a straight up option attack. It all comes down to the quarterback, which has been Juice for the most part. If Zook doesn't change his gameplan to correlate with his players talents then he needs to go. There are just too many wr who are not doing anything and rb that sit on the bench while Juice gains two yards a carry.

This bum has cost has by himself cost us at least 10 victories over the last 3 years. COME ON ZOOK BENCH THIS LOSER and go back to the drawing board.
