‘The Game’ looking like anything but

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—For years, the annual showdown between rivals Ohio State and Michigan has been called “The Game.”

Maybe this year it should be referred to as The “Just Another” Game.

No. 9 Ohio State (9-2, 6-1) has already assured itself of its first spot in the Rose Bowl in 13 years after clinching at least a share of the Big Ten title and the conference’s Bowl Championship Series automatic berth with Saturday’s 27-24 overtime victory over 15th-ranked Iowa.

“We told our guys they could have three hours to savor that, but when the clock strikes 12 o’clock, we know what week it is,” coach Jim Tressel said.

In other words, it’s time for the contest with the Buckeyes’ biggest rival, Michigan.

The Wolverines (5-6, 1-6) have lost four in a row and six of the last seven and remain tied for last in the Big Ten after Saturday’s 45-24 beating at the hands of Wisconsin.

“There’s no question we’ve got one more chance,” embattled Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said in Madison, Wis. “I’ve asked the team to be extra focused. We’ve been focused all year, but this is the biggest game of the year. Our guys know that.”

What used to be the red-letter day on the calendar for each team has become one of relatively minor rewards.

In addition to sticking it to their nemesis, the Buckeyes would like to win an outright conference title. But it’s hard to imagine anyone rallying to the battle cry of “Avoid a co-championship!”

Asked if the teams’ vastly different fortunes and the Buckeyes’ recent accomplishments would make it difficult to get up for Michigan, Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman said, “It’s not tough at all. We want to win the championship outright and to beat Michigan. That’s a lot of motivation to play well.”

The Buckeyes have beaten two top-15 teams in as many weeks, knocking off then-No. 11 Penn State 24-7 in Happy Valley two weeks ago. Those two wins gave them the Rose Bowl bid—and a Jan. 1 date against the Pac-10 winner. No. 11 Oregon (8-2, 6-1) currently leads that race, with Stanford (7-3, 6-2), Oregon State (7-3, 5-2) and Arizona (6-3, 4-2) hot on the webbed feet of the Ducks.

“We’re not worried about the bowl game right now, we’re just worried about Michigan,” Ohio State defensive end Lawrence Wilson said. “Michigan is a good team and it’s a huge rivalry. It’s the biggest rivalry in sports.”

Besides, it’s not as if Ohio State is steamrolling teams. The offense remains a question mark, with quarterback Terrelle Pryor and the rest of the Buckeyes playing adequately but not much better. Backs Brandon Saine (103 yards on 11 carries) and Dan Herron (97 on 32) combining for 200 yards rushing and three touchdowns. But Pryor totaled just 93 yards on his 14 completions. And Tressel showed little faith in his offense by basically killing time until the overtime and then using three plunges into the line to set up Devin Barclay’s 39-yard game-winning field goal.

“We’re going to have to get better for next week,” Tressel said. “And we’re going on the road in the big one.”

Michigan needs a win to salvage its season, but that’s sort of like putting lipstick on a pig. A victory would give the Wolverines, who are coming off a 3-9 season a year ago in Rich Rodriguez’s debut in Ann Arbor, the minimum requirement for playing in a bowl game—a non-losing record. The Wolverines could also avoid the Big Ten cellar, hardly a blood-boiling bit of motivation, in addition to knocking their neighbors to the south down a peg or two.

Rodriguez believes the game is still, well, The Game.

“It’s not going to be a game that either team needs to get fired up for,” he said. “It’s Michigan and Ohio State. We got a lot at stake. It’s at our place and it’s our seniors’ last game. The focus this week should be great, I just hope the play is great.”

One other incentive for Rodriguez and his players might be securing the coach’s job. It seems unimaginable that Michigan would pull the plug on RichRod and his acclaimed spread attack after only two seasons, but then again the Wolverines hadn’t missed a bowl game in 33 years before missing a year ago.

The man who brought Rodriguez to Michigan, athletic director Bill Martin, has announced he is retiring effective Sept. 4, 2010. Is it possible that the new AD might want to mollify many unhappy fans and ex-players and tear the whole program up to start over with a new head coach?

Usually the Ohio State-Michigan game is the ultimate winner-take-all contest in the Big Ten. Focus has never been a problem. It has been simple: See rival, beat rival, celebrate.

But this year, the Buckeyes have accomplished so much already—and the Wolverines have struggled so much—it’s not surprising that the focus might not be there.

“We’ve worked so hard for this and I’m so relieved,” Coleman said in the din of the postgame celebration. “I think we still have some unfinished business up in Michigan, but right now we’re on top of the world. (This week) we’ve got to get back to work and get ready for Michigan.”

For once that might be hard to do.

Sad facts are that Ohio St and Michigan need each other. Michigan being down hurts Ohio St's rep as a Big Ten power and the entire Big Ten national rep as being a really down conference. Fans crack me up... everyone twists the facts to suit them. I do not like either team but Ohio St owns Michigan right now... in the 90s Michigan owned Ohio St... nothing lasts 4ever

@OSUMatt....all other teams with a plus own Tressel. 0-9 vs. the SEC. Humiliated by LSU and UF on the national stage. USC and Texas play whack-a-mole with OSU. PSU beats your "all-world" team last year at your house, during your homecoming. A crap USC team this year comes in with a true-freshman QB and beats you straight up.

    # 37, John..in one to two more years ?? REALLY ?? I do support my team, but I am not going to support RR. The guys RR wants are all small guys to fit his type, or idea, of a spread offense. The guys he's recruiting are small guys as well...how are they going to keep the bigger defensive guys out of our backfield ? How about keep the opposing offenses from running and throwing all over you ? All the players are out of gas by the second half..and it has been brought up so many times before by the so called professionals. If you look at their stats, it shows the same, so what will be the difference next year or the year after ?? Every team will have their balance of big guys, on both sides of the ball, and RR will have small guys on both sides of the ball for us. So what's going to change ?? The smaller guys will always get gased trying to fend of the much bigger guys. RR brought a lot of negative baggage with him and it hasn't stopped with him bringing negativity to the school !! That should have never happened and there is no excuse for it. Gee, now practice logs are not accounted for ?? Come on John, how much crap should we out up with from this guy ?? Rules and regulations don't change with schools, another negative blow bto the school and program by RR. Due to him, we are losing recruit committments and players. Michigan has no place for a guy like RR, he's trouble. What is it going to be down the road with him ?? Illegal recruiting and scouting tactics ? Like the sec team trying to get the player to drop his committment to another school to come to theirs ?? You know, the one promising the playyers dad a job if he drops his committment to the other school and comes to play for them ? Every since RR got to Michigan, it has been one problem after another. Before he even got here, a lot of the allumni didn't want him here..it was the Ad, WHO FOR SOME STRANGE REASON IS NOW RETIREING !!!

People seem to drift a little far afield here. The truth is, all the Big Ten schools are excellent academic institutions. I don't understand all the trash talk. We are all brothers and sisters, if you went to one of these schools. Michigan has given Rodriguez two years, he had 7-5 talent bothe years and did not achieve on that level. The team has not improved at all from when he took over. The same results every week. After Saturday, Rodriguez will be 3-13 in conference games, Tressel will be 59-13. Tressel has done it cleanly and with class. If we are very lucky, we can get Jim Harbaugh in here next year. there is only one streak Rodriguez has not managed to end at Michigan and that may fall this Saturday if Ohio State shuts out the Wolverines. Martin is leaving a little too late, and he needs to take his boy with him. Martin should have been fired after the Les Miles debacle anyway. A nice man and a good fundraiser, but not an AD. It is only a rivalry if both teams are competitive, and unless the OSU throwback uniforms include the throwback players, Michigan does not stand a chance of winning.

Though some may say I'm saying this so that OSU can win a few more against him, I agree that Rich Rodriguez deserves one more year to bring Michigan around. It is possible that Carr did not leave much left in the tank for him to use. Given that, it should only take RR about three years to get good talent back at Michigan.

If RR doesn't produce more wins next year with three years of recruiting and coaching, it's time to move on. Many other coaches get canned even sooner. I predict that next year will be RR's last if he doesn't have a good game against his rivals (OSU/PSU/ND) or a bowl. Frankly, I do believe he is partly responsible for this year's problems, but a good coach deserves three strikes before I'd throw him out.

OSU has never had this many problems with a head coach before, and neither should Michigan. If I weren't a buckeye, I'd feel sorry for the Wolverine faithful. I just can't help but love to see those wolverines choke on our... Stop thinking so dirty! I was going to say buckeyes! Jeez! Everyone's always thinking explicitly. Have fun! ;)

It's the "real" Michigan fans, like Navy Vet, that crack up this Michigan fan. It's pretty easy to pile on a guy who walked into a locker room, that didn't have much talent in it, for not winning. Seriously, I listen to talk radio, read few blogs, but I am tired of the "real" Michigan fans crying. How about supporting your team? RR is an excellent coach, and with 1 to 2 more years will have Michigan back to the point of mattering. Lloyd didn't leave much for RR to work with, so, not only did the poor athletes that Lloyd left not fit his system, but it is a new system, and you don't learn it over night. Have you looked at the roster...not exactly upper classmen heavy. I had been done with Lloyd for several years before he retired, and lets not pretend that he was the messiah. Lloyd lost the majority of big games he coached. His final game, against Florida, was how that team should have played the whole year, and I blame Lloyd for not winning a National title with that crew. I think they had a lot of upper classmen on that team. Uhh, might have been a good time to leave.

Everybody seems to complain about Oh. St. winning games in a conservative fashion. Some Tressel haters think he's a boring coach. GET OVER IT!!!

Tressel wins lots of football games. His record is 91-21. He won a national title in 2002, and has gotten to two more title games since. He and his team are the envy of many a great football team, and have only recently had a string of bad bowl games. The loss to Texas was close and tough, and frankly Colt McCoy deserves a Heisman just for his performance last year, much less this year.

He can't help that the Big Ten is such a weak conference. OSU boldly put teams like Texas and USC on his schedule to prove the buckeyes can play with the best with mixed results. Few other teams have deliberately scheduled BCS-bowl eligible non-conference opponents. OSU is doing everything that other schools will not, in order to prove itself worthy of a good reputation.

If the objective is to win, Tressel and OSU have done more than almost any other team I can think of since 2001. Compare the results of OSU to any other coaches or teams since Tressel took over at OSU. I think Tressel will one day earn the respect nearly the same as Woody himself. He deserves it.

It's hilarious how any team that has played Michigan last year or this year and have won act like they have accomplished anything. You all laughed when we played Delaware, but you too played very weak teams. But then, by playing Michigan last year and this year, is no different then Michigan playing Delaware State..it's just a scrimmage. RR has ruined a once proud and winning program and has caused players to leave the team and even pull their committments to the school. Once RR is gone, and we can go back to being a Big-10 team again, big, fast players not small and somewhat fast players, then the games will be worth the win. Michigan football will never work with RR and his much smaller spread offense and smaller defenders..NEVER !!! I am a Wolverine fan, but to be a fan for any team that plays Michigan and act like you accomplished something is way beyond me. Michigan has no talent except for one of our defensive guys( no name mentioned...GRAHAM). He can't be the only great player and the team win. The team is not better then it was last year...maybe even worse then last year. The rest of the team can only play one half...not an entire game. I will admit that we are years away from being competitive, but I will never stop being a Michigan fan. When ever we can manage to get rid of RR and his croonies, I am sure that within 3 years after that we will be a contender again. With RR, no way what so ever. He wants nothing but a spread offense with way smaller guys on defense...that is not Michigan football nor is it Big 10 footnall. It will not work here. I just worry how badly RR ruined our schools recruiting and how long it will take to fix his F-up there ?? I really feel sorry for the next coach- I wonder if we will ever get Harbough here ? I believe we had Miles untill some big mouth let the cat out of the bag and didn't give miles time to take care of business on his side.

LOL, look at how pathetic OSU fans are. Why are you even picking on any teams outside of UM football? Other than the current Cavs vs. Pistons, Michigan teams are far better than Ohio teams. Excuse me if the current Pistons are a bit mediocre like the Lebron Cavaliers have been for the past 4-5 years. We were too busy winning the f"$%king NBA championship a mere 5 years ago and came within 2 minutes or a Robert Horry miracle of winning another.

Tigers choked indeed, no dispute their. Say hi to Eric Wedge and that successful team over at Progressive Field for me. Truman was President the last time they WON the World Series.

If your going to talk up Ohio, talk about the Cincinnatti Bearcats (don't even mention the Bungles, God I can't wait til they begin their usual implosion). They are probably the best team the Big East has had to offer since V Tech, BC, and Mia left the conference.

Last OSU men's basketball title, we have to travel back to the 60's, sweet let's get some weed!

Don't get started on hockey, Red Wings OWN the Jackets (I won't hold that against you since they are only like 8 years old).

    GO DUCKS!! QUACK QUACK QUACK!!!!

I love how all OSU fans always bring up Appalachian State, especially wurkinwoodwheel. I bet OSU would have lost that game too. OSU hasn't been an exceptionally good team this year, they just have been lucky when it was necessary. But, while I'd rather be lucky than good, it doesn't mean that you're a dominant team. Let's see if OSU can go to the Rose Bowl and not EMBARRASS the Big 10 like they've done the past few years. If they can do that, I'll be happy...but I'm not holding my breath. And I know one of you OSU fans is going to come back and say, "at least we're in a bowl game." But, come on...I'd rather not be in a bowl game than be in one and get my A$$ kicked when I'm supposed to be the much more dominate team.

    1. APPALACHIAN STATE.

    2. TOLEDO.

    3. 42-7 (2008 OSU v. UM).

    4. SEE #1

As a fellow Michigander and Buckeye fan from birth...Lions suck, UM sucks, Tigers had the lead for the division half the year and choked it away so they suck, Pistons traded the best thing going for them (Chauncy) so they suck, the ONLY and BEST thing going in Detroit is the REDWINGS...LETS GO REDWINGS!!!! The Coney's are pretty good too.

The Buckeyes might be the 2nd best team in Ohio, but that's not that bad, Cinci is tough this year. However the wolverines are probably the 3rd best team in the state this year, behind Central Michigan and Michigan State. You guys got crushed by Illinois... Really? Even with all that said, records don't matter in this game, as a Buckeye fan I've had my heart broken too many times to take anything for granted. This is THE game of the year, because it's the only one that matters every year. 11-1 with a loss to michigan is a failure, 1-11 with a win over michigan is a success in my book. I grew up in Toledo right on the border, it's insane the entire week of the game. Now LET's GO BUCKS!!! OH-IO!!! Michigan.... SUCKS!!!!!

    1) Hopefully you die a slow, painful death

    2) Only the Lions suck out of your vicious rant. How many NBA Finals games have the Cavs won?
Last time Indians won the W.S.? Last time the Cleveland Browns had anymore relevance than the Lions? So unless your a Reds fan and you want to travel back to 1990 or beyond to the 70's, shut up. OSU wins 1 national title in the past 40 years and so you think your the best thing since sliced bread.

    3) OSU is the 2nd best team in the state of Ohio.

    4) How is Maurice Clarett enjoying his human booster shots in the pen? Did Tressel give him any advice on trying various lubricants?

    5) Refer to #1
