QB Terrelle Pryor says Buckeyes must avoid letdown

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Terrelle Pryor has a warning for his Ohio State teammates: Forget last week and take Iowa seriously.

Pryor said Wednesday night that the 10th-ranked Buckeyes must be careful not to follow last week’s big victory over Penn State with a letdown in the winner-take-all Rose Bowl battle against No. 15 Iowa on Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback said coach Jim Tressel had illustrated the pitfalls of resting on week-old laurels.

“Coach Tres showed a statistic how all these teams go and beat a big team and then come in the next game (and lose),” Pryor said after practice.

He cited the Buckeyes’ loss to Purdue, which was just 1-5 at the time, earlier this season. He said Ohio State was coming off an emotional victory against Wisconsin and didn’t see the Boilermakers waiting to ambush them.

Pryor also used Oregon as an example. The Ducks walloped Southern California two weeks ago and then turned around and lost to Stanford last week.

“Maybe sometimes there’s a mindset where you think you accomplished something,” he said. “It happens a lot, I’m sure, and we can’t let that happen to us. Because we have a goal that we want to reach and we have places that we want to go and if we do that, we’re definitely getting knocked off by this (Iowa) team because this team is pretty good. They’re the real deal on defense. We have to come in focused.”

The winner of the game at Ohio Stadium will get the Big Ten’s automatic Bowl Championship Series berth in the Rose Bowl and be assured of at least a share of the conference title. The Buckeyes are seeking at least a piece of their fifth straight Big Ten crown.

Whether the winner is Ohio State (8-2, 5-1) or Iowa (9-1, 5-1), even if that team lost a week later in the regular-season finale, it would win any tiebreaker and earn the spot in the Rose Bowl.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has seen the films of Pryor and is impressed with how he has developed this year in his first full season as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback.

“He’s found a rhythm. He’s more comfortable now. He’s more experienced, certainly,” Ferentz said. “He’s always been a phenomenal athlete and now he’s becoming a better quarterback, a more comfortable quarterback. And it takes time.”

Pryor’s teammates think he has found a calmness that has helped him handle the pressures and problems of being in the spotlight so early in his college career.

DeVier Posey has become Pryor’s No. 1 target as a receiver—and one of his best friends. He said the players surrounding Pryor have helped ease the burden on him.

“We’ve taken some pressure off of him. We’ve been trying to focus on team concepts and let Terrelle know that he’s our guy, that he really doesn’t have to get into too much what the media’s saying about him and the criticism,” Posey said. “I feel like he’s playing with no pressure now. You can see him a lot more comfortable in the pocket and he’s actually running the offense now. He’s just being more of a leader and he’s getting better and better every week. You can see what kind of player he’s going to be in the future.”

The game against Penn State might have been a glimpse into how far Pryor has come. Considered the nation’s No. 1 quarterback recruit when he came out of Jeannette, Pa., he had included Penn State on his list of finalists before deciding on Ohio State.

A large crowd at Beaver Stadium taunted him and held up derisive signs on Saturday night but he seemed to shut all that out while playing one of his finest games.

“His decision-making grade was, I think, one of the best he’s had,” Tressel said. “He needs to do some of the little things better, things like carrying out fakes and this and that, but his decision-making was very good.”

Earlier in the season, Pryor was hurt by poor decisions. He arced long passes that led to costly interceptions and made ill-advised pitches on the option.

Pryor’s position coach, Nick Siciliano, said Pryor has gotten calmer when there is more riding on the game.

“I don’t know why it happened that way but it did and I’m sure glad that it happened that way Saturday night,” Siciliano said. “He did seem to be a little bit calmer. He did make great decisions with the football. There were a couple of bad ones here and there (but) that’s part of the deal. But we didn’t turn the ball over and there wasn’t anything even close to a turnover. If we can do that again this week, we’ve got a chance.”

Pryor, who said he is still sore from several hard hits in recent weeks, feels he is improving at letting the game come to him.

“Sometimes I get caught up in different emotions in a game,” he said. “I thought I was pretty calm, though (against Penn State).”

rick z - In post #72, I posed the question, "How has the SEC faired in BCS games, rick?", after making the statement that bowl games were OOC games and making the assertion that BCS games were the toughest of those games.

I'm sorry that your education was lacking in the basics of understanding the written word. Perhaps now that you've had the question explained to you, you would like to comment on the SEC's record in BCS games.

You are truly indicative of the type of person who requires the help of a professional. I hope your parents realize the problem before you do something to cause them embarrassment and wind up in prison, or worse.

In the mean time, rick z, have a wonderful day.

Lawrence, you are the typical SEC illiterate. You referenced the bowl games SEC teams play. In case you haven't noticed, this article is about the Big 10, so I used Big 10 stats.

The SEC is 9-9 in the last 18 bowl games against the Big 10. Given that most of those games are in SEC territory and that SEC fans like you are always running your mouths about how superior you are, I'd say that record is pathetic for your group.

Start winning more games, or STFU.

Just wanted to mention one thing. I am a buckeye but the facts of the big vs the sec debate overall is this. Any stats(win or lose) of arkansas or penn st before they joined their respective conferences sec big 10 should be thrown out the window. It sucks but you can only count those wins or losses when they both joined. Don't know when arkansas joined sec but i know penn st joined the big 11 in 94.

rick z - You really should take another look at my post #72 - there is not a single reference to the Big Ten conference, or team, but the SEC that you so vigorously disparage. With that in mind, you reach back into your nether region and pull out some remote fact that doesn't have any relation to the question posed in my post about the SEC's BCS record.

And you say that we're illiterate. Oh rick, you're exposing yourself.

Good luck to you, rick z.

I am a huge Buckeye fan and have been for about 21 years, But Ohio State cannot go into this game with the mindset that with their starting QB out of lineup they will be a pushover. Ohio State still has to come ready to play in order to win the Big Ten Title because Iowa will still come ready to play.

But, have a lovely evening anyway.

61 - rick z - I read your blog and although I don't agree with most of it, I was going to give you credit for at least trying to have a conversation. Then you added the last paragraph and ruined it all. Dude, I don't give up on many people but your hatred is just too deep seeded to overcome. Hatred will eat away at not only your heart but your soul. This is advise from a good old Southern country boy, let the hatred go.

Given the facts above and the fact we both have jobs and we both are passionate about CFB, guess we have more in common tha we thought. Quite the opposite, I have been a fan of my 'Canes since 1979. I just don't know why you want to disparage William & Mary, a fine institution. Does Ohio State exist for education or are athletics first?

"Larry... It isn't just a Big Ten team that plays in the Rose Bowl. They dissolved that written rule at least 10 years ago. Has I wrote earlier tho, the Rose Bowl officials do their best to uphold tradition so they will pick a Big Ten team that doesn't belong over some other rightful team that should be there."

The Big Ten champ has an auto-bid to the Rose Bowl. If the champ is in the NCG, they will pick a BCS bowl eligible team from the Big Ten and not because of tradition, but because of money. The Big Ten fans spend it.

@66 Wisconsin beat Stanford on 1/1/2000.

With respect to Big Ten vs. SEC vs. Pac-10 etc., you must look at out-of-conference play. Obviously, the sum total of wins & losses for conference play will net zero. So OOC games become the comparison point

For the Big Ten, each team plays 8 conference games out of the 10 other teams, plus 4 OOC games. So far in 2009, the results are:
vs BCS ("Big six" plus Notre Dame) 7-7 with Illinois still to play Cincinnati
vs other FBS 16-2 with Illinois still to play Fresno State and Wisconsin to play Hawaii
vs FCS 8-0 with Minnesota still to play South Dakota State

The SEC also plays 8 conference games plus 4 OOC. This year:
vs. BCS 7-4 (with Florida vs. Florida State, Georgia vs. Georgia Tech, and South Carolia vs. Clemson still to be played)
vs. other FBS 20-2 with Arkansas still to play Troy
    vs. FCS 11-0

The Pac-10 plays a full conference schedule (everybody plays everybody else once) plus 3 OOC games. In 2009:
vs. BCS 7-7 with Stanford still to play Notre Dame
    vs. other FBS 9-2
    vs. FCS 4-0

So really, I don't see any huge difference between these conferences when you consider games versus other BCS league opponents.

But let's look at the difference versus other opponents:
SEC: 12 teams have 11 games versus FCS opponents and 10 games versus Sun Belt teams (which aren't that much better than FCS teams). That is essentially 2 guaranteed wins for every team in the league. Let's say that an "average" SEC team wins half of their other OOC games (average of 1 vs. a BCS team and 1 more vs. Conf USA/MAC/WAC/MWC team), and that means a 4-4 record in conference play turns into a 7-5 result at year end.

Big Ten: slightly better, but there are still 9 games vs. FCS teams and 14 games vs. MAC teams (which is slightly better than the Sun Belt) , so you have a similar situation. Your 4-4 team from conference play is a 7-5 team at year end.

Pac-10: more games vs BCS teams (avg. 1.5 per Pac-10 team) and only 4 games vs. FCS teams. Your "average" Pac-10 team will end up at 6-6 instead of 7-5.

Conclusions: SEC is over-rated, and mid-league Pac-10 teams are likely better than teams with comparable records from other leagues.

    rick z -
1995 Nebraska (arguably the best college football team ever) beat UF by 38 points
1996 Florida beat Florida State (during their dynasty years - most top 5 finishes in history) by 32 points
That was fourteen/thirteen years ago. What's your point?

The last time I checked bowl games are out of conference. I would think that BCS games are the toughest of those games. How has the SEC faired in BCS games, rick? Not too bad.

When Alabama played 7th ranked Virginia Tech in Atlanta the first game of the season how did that work out? One of those teams is still undefeated, the other is still ranked. You left that out of your analysis.

Tim Tebow has two touchdown passes in excess of 60 yards this season.

Florida was placed on probation 19 years ago. I'm not sure what you mean by 'major' probation. That's just short of ancient history in the scheme of things.

Academically, UF has been ranked in the top 50 of all public and private universities - combined - in the country on a continuous basis for as long as I have been reading US News and World Report (about 20 years).

The last paragraph is purely conjecture on your part. I can tell you, however, that when I moved to Florida from Ohio in 1974 that I was surprised that race relations in St. Petersburg were much more relaxed than they were in Cleveland. That sentiment was renewed this summer when my brother-in-law from the Cleveland area came down to New Orleans to help with relief work and noted that if he had to walk through a neighborhood in Cleveland like that in which we stay in NOLA , he would have been frightened. I've spent about four months there in the last two years without ever having witnessed a problem, but that's real and you're just spouting off about things that you know nothing about.

I'm pleased that you took my advice and switched up on your insults. It shows that you're trying.

As always, rick z, have a great day.
