Florida increases Spikes suspension to full game

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—With all the negative attention “weighing heavy on his heart,” Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes asked to serve a full-game suspension for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back.

Coach Urban Meyer obliged, saying Wednesday that it was in the top-ranked Gators’ best interest that Spikes sit out Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt.

“I really don’t want to be a distraction to the team,” Spikes said after practice. “I want the guys to prepare without any negative things going on, and I feel like if I would play, it would be a big thing going on. I’m just trying to stay out of the way and just motivate the guys.”

Meyer had faced some criticism for only suspending his star defender for the first half of the Vandy game. The Southeastern Conference accepted the original punishment.

Spikes stuck his hand into the facemask of Georgia’s Washaun Ealey during Florida 41-17 victory against the Bulldogs. There was no penalty called at the time, but after talk about the play spread, Meyer reviewed it and decided to punish Spikes.

Meyer, Spikes and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong agreed to increase the punishment.

“A lot of the negative things out there really weighing heavy on his heart right now and so we thought that, as a group, we decided the best interest just for the team to not play him Saturday,” Meyer said. “It was a group decision and we’re doing it out of respect to our team so we can focus on trying to win our ninth game.

“We think it’s the right thing to do. We support Brandon fully and we look forward to get back and finish the season the right way.”

Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks.

He considered entering the NFL draft in January, but decided to return for his senior season in hopes of helping Florida win a third national title in four years.

But he’s battled injuries all season. He missed time early in the season because of an Achilles’ tendon injury, and sat out most of two games because of a strained groin. He played only a series against Arkansas on Oct. 17 and sat out the entire game the following week.

He returned against Georgia and finished with a team-high 10 tackles. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

What he did to Ealey, though, overshadowed one of his best games of the season. Meyer said Spikes was retaliating for things that happened earlier in the game.

Ealey defended Spikes on Tuesday, saying he didn’t believe he should have been suspended. Ealey also said he was surprised the play drew so much attention.

Fifth-year senior Ryan Stamper is expected to replace Spikes in the starting lineup.

“I’m pretty sure that Stamper got my back, and my teammates really support this decision” Spikes said.

    Post 2110, you're absolutely right.

Dawg, this is not a football discussion and everyone knows it. Remove all the smack talk from both sides and you'd have maybe 100 intelligent and rational posts about football.

So, in honor of David L and everyone else who wears or has worn a uniform, smack talk away. I'm going searching for some real football discussion.

Here's something to debate. I'm giving extra points to those who can defend my hypothetical position. Think of it as your chance to be a devil's advocate.

OK, here goes. Suppose I can 1) don a military uniform for a country other than the United States, voluntarily (in other words, there's no draft, no compulsory conscription), and I can then go off to another country and do the snoogly snoogly thing to women and children; or 2)

Or I can pull my own pud.

In which senario am I doing the most good?

I say me pulling my own pud is more beneficial to humanity than me donning any military outfit and doing what uniform-wearers do. To, statistically, mostly women and children. Cuz they're brave. And get a paycheck.

Now, defend me. Defend my right to speak freely in a country where it's cool to speak one's mind.

Oh, gawd. Just kidding. Just a joke. Nevermind. I misread the question.

    As you were....

Stop all the crying. This is football. Spikes thinking was, "If you f*** with me in the pile and hurt me , I will pizz in your cheerios. I am not going to take it and I am not going to whine to the officials, they will do nothing. I will take care of this myself because I am bad enough, mean enough
and tough enough. " ............................................... He was wrong in what he did and could have really injured someone. He made a mistake. He is paying a high price now, that has nothing to do with the token suspension. This was not an every play deal. Spikes is a great player and is going to play at the next level. But Spikes is still a young, tough, prideful, kid..... that made a mistake. Let's move on to the next game. JMHO

As a lifelong Gator fan, I've always thought that Urban had been a great program manager who knew how to discipline his players for misconduct (Marcus Thomas in 2006, Jamar Hornsby in 2007, Cam Newton last year in 2008, etc.) and I would've expected better from Spikes, who in spite of what everyone says, is NOT a thug. He is genuninely a nice human being and he made a mistake. Even W. Ealey doesn't think Spikes tried to do anything and doesn't even think he should even be suspended. I agree the 1/2 game thing was ridiculous, but if you're going to blame someone for not taking more action, it should be the SEC or the NCAA.
This heavily scrutinized play has been taken out of context--the whole game was chippy as a lot of players on both sides went after one another and I'm not saying that it's an excuse for what spikes did.
To be honest with you and I think a lot of Gator fans will agree--I'm not even sure what to make of all of all this. Spikes didn't try to gouge someone's eyes out (which Ealey will confirm) and it looks pretty bad on video. I'll just say this--if you're a player and want to hurt someone, hurt em where it's going to hurt the most at the end...on the scoreboard.

First off, as post 2104 mentioned, yes, some of my brave brothers and sisters in uniform lost their lives in a senseless shooting and my heart goes out to their families. But they, and I put on this uniform to defend the rights of you folks to post your feelings on stuff like this. So to honor them, I say the following.....

Florida, suspend Spikes for the rest of the season if you have any balls!

Nick -- I am 58 years old and have never heard the term "Dirty South" till today.
Son you need to gets some new friends - You are hanging out with the wrong crowd.
The blight and poverty in the rust belt and northern cities makes the south look like paradise. Maybe I should say "get a job". Then you might be able to afford to see more of this great part of the country and meet some of the nicest people on earth.

BTW south central LA in not the South, if you are confused.

Just some advice from another "grimey untamed animal" lol
