The long shadow of the Atlantic Coast Conference seemingly stretches all the way to the coastal North Carolina city where for years UNC Wilmington's proud baseball program lurked under the radar. Maybe all the Seahawks needed to begin emerging from that darkness was a season-long power surge. "We really didn't feel like this club would have this much power," coach Mark Scalf said Thursday.

This was just what the Atlanta Braves envisioned a year ago. Well, almost. Joshua Fields was dominant on the mound at Turner Field on Tuesday night, throwing fastballs clocked at 97 mph and striking out two batters in the ninth inning for another save. Such outings prompted the Braves to select Fields in the second round of the draft last June.

A bench-clearing brawl in a junior college tournament Tuesday night ended with umpires ejecting every player and declaring a double forfeit that ended the season for both schools. Weatherford College and New Mexico Junior College emptied its benches in the sixth when a skirmish at second base set off a mele with thrown punches and tangled players.

Buster Posey was all over the field for Florida State. The Seminoles catcher played all nine defensive positions -- and hit a grand slam -- in a 10-0 seven-inning victory over Savannah State on Monday. Posey, a junior who's expected to be a high pick in the major league baseball draft in June, became the fourth Seminoles player under coach Mike Martin to play all nine positions.

Nick Restaino has a bunch of thieves on his Fordham baseball team. They don't think twice about stealing, and the Rams coach wholeheartedly encourages all the pilfering. "We've got guys who can run and really steal bases," Restaino said. "And speed kills in sports, right?" It sure does, and it also can help you win ballgames.

A Georgia Tech pitcher died last month from an accidental drug overdose, the medical examiner's office said Monday, but it has not been determined if heroin was involved.
