North Carolina State's potential dream season turned into a nightmare. Picked to finish third in the conference in a preseason media poll, based mainly on last year's late run to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title game, the Wolfpack instead staggered home in 12th and last place. In bowing out of the tourney with an opening-round loss to Miami, the Wolfpack ended the year on a nine-game losing streak, matching the 1991-1992 team for the longest in school history. The problems started when Farnold Degan, a transfer from Iowa State who won the starting job at point guard, went down with a season-ending knee injury after 10 games.
