The 49ers fell hard and fast after winning the Big West Conference championship in 2006-07. They set a school record with 25 losses, but coach Dan Monson was satisfied with their effort.
"I'm so proud of these guys," Monson told The Long Beach Press-Telegram after the fifth-seeded 49ers lost to No. 5 UC Irvine 77-63 in the opening round of the Big West tournament. "We gave up 47 points in the first half to Irvine, and a lot of teams would have stopped playing defense in the second half. But we came out and fought and never quit. And that's the way we've been all season."
Small wonders were all Monson had to celebrate in his first season at Long Beach State. He inherited a team that was going through a full-scale collapse. ...More |
