Bradford Burgess scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Virginia Commonwealth past Hampton 63-52 on Monday night. The Rams (3-1) led 28-19 at halftime before the Pirates (0-3) pulled within 29-25 on a layup by Mike Tuitt with 19:34 left to play. Often, it's hard to know what to expect when a team experiences a coaching change, but as an assistant under his predecessor, Kevin Nickleberry, interim coach Edward Joyner Jr. recruited every player on the Pirates' roster.
The guy in charge might be familiar to the Hampton players, but he's bringing a new style to the program. The Pirates played a more deliberate game under Nickleberry, but Joyner intends to push the tempo at both ends of the floor in what the new coach describes as "in-your-face basketball."
