Jarvis Varnado scored 10 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and became the all-time leading shot-blocker in the Southeastern Conference as Mississippi State beat Bethune-Cookman 67-51 on Saturday night. It's been a long, hard road for Bethune-Cookman since making the leap to Division I, but the perennial struggles of the Wildcats could be at an end.
Bethune-Cookman returns the core of a team that gave the Wildcats their first winning record since joining the D-I ranks.
The list of returning talent starts with sophomore point guard C.J. Reed, son of coach Clifford Reed Jr. A second team all-conference preseason selection, the younger Reed won MEAC rookie of the year honors last season, and took a greater role on and off the court during the Wildcats' trip to Costa Rica this summer.
