Gibbs’ 20 lead Pitt past Colonels 71-60

Preview | Box Score | Recap

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Ashton Gibbs scored 20 points and Pittsburgh began pulling away by holding Eastern Kentucky scoreless for more than eight minutes during a 71-60 victory on Thursday night, the Panthers’ 24th in a row at home.

Gibbs, who scored 22 against Binghamton on Tuesday, had seven points during a 13-0 run that began with 6:57 remaining in the first half and ended with Pitt leading 41-24.

The Panthers (3-0) rarely allowed the Colonels (1-1) more than one shot on a possession, doubling them in rebounds most of the game before finishing with a 47-25 advantage.

Justin Stommes scored 24 for Eastern Kentucky, which played its first game against a major college opponent this season.

Pitt has won 41 in a row on its home court against non-conference opponents, two off the school record.

Hopefully the Panthers will hold there own in the Big East.. However, looks as though there is a lot of good teams especially Syracuse and Villanova. Never count out Connecticut,Notre Dame or Louisville. Jamie will have a decent team on the floor. He is a great coach and I wish them the best.

plutaris, you could not be more correct. It seems like the guards are loath to involve either big man! So far this season, every time they got the ball into the big men good things have happened. They are just not doing it very often. Jamie needs to teach the guards how to make a bounce pass into the key. However, because of how easy it is to make three pointers, Pitt might do all right this year if Gibbs and the other guards keep making three's! I hate that about the college game, but you can win in college with shooters. Look at Villanova year in and year out......four guards and a swing man and they win every year!

Dante Taylor showed up on the Boards with 12, however he needs to take more than 2 shots
during a game. He did make both of them. Coach Dixon needs to get the guards to get the
ball into Taylor alot more during these non-con games so that he is ready come BigEast season.
Another nice game from sophomore Ashton Gibbs and true freshmen Lamar Patterson made an
impact tonite. Also sophomore Nasir Robinson is stepping up early to be the 2nd scoring option
    after Gibbs.
