CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP)—Center Jordan Eglseder scored 17 points to lead Northern Iowa past Denver 61-56 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Freshman point guard Johnny Moran had 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds— including a 3 with 41 seconds left to push the Panthers lead to 57-51—and Ali Farokhmanesh scored 13 for Northern Iowa (1-0).
Nate Rohnert had a game-high 20 points and five rebounds for Denver (0-1), which led 20-19 at halftime. Kyle Lewis scored 15 points and Rob Lewis added 13.
Eglseder shot 8-of-9 from the floor as Northern Iowa picked up its sixth straight season-opening win.
