STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Talor Battle scored 21 points and Jamelle Cornley had 14 points and 12 rebounds as Penn State beat William & Mary 65-51 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Cornley led the way for the Nittany Lions (1-0) in his first game after missing the final three games of last season with a knee injury. Penn State’s Stanley Pringle added 12 points.
The Tribe (0-1) got 15 points from Danny Sumner.
Penn State shot 47 percent from the field while William & Mary shot 39. The Nittany Lions grabbed an 8-0 lead to start the game and held a 35-24 edge at the intermission. The Tribe trimmed the deficit to 52-43 on a three-pointer by Chris Darnell with 5:13 to play in the game.
