Texas may be feeling the effects of no longer having one of the nation’s best players on its roster.

The No. 16 Longhorns look for a better offensive showing when they host UC Davis on Friday as part of the StubHub Legends Classic.

With last season’s national player of the year Kevin Durant now in the NBA, Texas scored its fewest points in a season-opening victory in 25 years Monday, beating Texas-San Antonio 58-37.

Even this early, the lack of scoring could be a concern for Texas, considering all its other starters returned from last season’s 25-10 team that averaged 81.7 points and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Longhorns, though, aren’t ready to panic as they move on without Durant, who averaged 25.8 points in his only college season.

“I don’t think (this) is a real good showing of what our offense can do,” said junior guard A.J. Abrams, who set a Big 12 record with 120 3-pointers last season but managed just 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting Monday. “I think we have the offensive firepower that will eventually develop.”

D.J. Augustin had a team-high 19 points for Texas, which went 8-for-23 from the field and led 22-19 at halftime before shooting 54.5 percent in the second half.

“They got tentative,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said of his players. “They can’t do that.”

The Longhorns, though, might be able to get by with defense, as they held Texas-San Antonio to 26.7 percent from the floor.

“It all comes back to discipline where we stay in front,” Barnes said. “For the most part again, 26 percent (against) will win you a lot of basketball games even with a subpar offense.”

The backcourt tandem that consists of Abrams, who averaged 15.5 points last season, and the sophomore Augustin, who averaged 14.4, will be expected to increase its production to fill much of the void left by Durant.

The Longhorns could also get a boost when prized 6-foot-7 freshman Gary Johnson is cleared to play. Johnson has been diagnosed with an unspecified heart condition.

Texas looks for its 13th straight home victory over a non-conference opponent when it meets UC Davis (1-1) for the first time.

The Aggies, opening their first season as a member of Division I, lost 75-65 at New Mexico State on Wednesday.

Vince Oliver had 17 points to lead four players in double figures for UC Davis, which shot 44.4 percent for the game but fell behind 11-0 and was outrebounded 47-20.

“Individually, we did some good things but collectively as a team we need to play much better, and we will,” coach Gary Stewart said.

Oliver is the top returning scorer from last season’s team that went 5-23.
