Harangody leads AP preseason All-America team

Luke Harangody should get used to being on top of lists.

The senior forward from Notre Dame was the leading vote-getter Monday on The Associated Press’ preseason All-America team, and if he has the type of season he usually does, he will become the leader for his school and conference in scoring and rebounding.

The 6-foot-8 Harangody received 57 votes from the 65-member national media panel and was followed in the balloting by Kansas teammates Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins. They are the sixth set of teammates selected for the preseason team, which began in 1986-87, and the second from Kansas, joining Raef LaFrentz and Paul Pierce in 1997-98.

Aldrich, a 6-11 junior who recorded a triple-double in the NCAA tournament, received 49 votes, 10 more than Collins, a senior point guard.

Junior forwards Patrick Patterson of Kentucky, who had 35 votes, and Kyle Singler of Duke, who had 30, rounded out the team announced Monday.

Harangody averaged 23.3 points and 11.8 rebounds last season, the only player to rank in the top 10 nationally in both categories. He was a preseason All-American in 2008-09 and was selected to the second team after the season.

He enters this season with 1,823 points—738 away from Austin Carr as Notre Dame’s career leader. He needs 370 rebounds to pass Tom Hawkins as the Fighting Irish’s career rebound leader, and averaging 20.6 points and 9.0 rebounds this season would make him the Big East’s career leader in both categories, passing Syracuse’s Lawrence Moten and Derrick Coleman, respectively.

Harangody decided to return to Notre Dame for his senior season after exploring his options for entering the NBA draft.

“It was a good experience for Luke to go through the process he did last summer,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. “He’s even more confident at moving around to different spots on the floor. We’re going to have him open up in transition much like he did at the end of last season and run him off a screen for 15- and 18-foot jump shots.

“He’ll be our main threat in the low post because that is his bread and butter, but we’re going to have him step out along the perimeter which should add another dimension to his game.”

Aldrich’s stock rose all last season and it culminated with the first official triple-double in Kansas history when he had 13 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocks in a second-round NCAA win over Dayton.

He averaged 14.9 points and 11.1 rebounds, joining national player of the year Blake Griffin of Oklahoma as the only players in the Big 12 to average a double-double last season.

Collins didn’t become a full-time starter until last season when he averaged 18.9 points and 5.0 assists in earning third-team All-American honors. He and Aldrich are the stars of a deep Kansas team picked No. 1 in the preseason Top 25.

“I do think we return the best guard in the country and the best big man in the country,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I think if you’re going to start a team, why not have an anchor and why not have a guard?”

Aldrich and Cole are the first teammates chosen to the preseason team since J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams of Duke in 2005-06.

The 6-9 Patterson averaged 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds for the Wildcats last season and he’s expected to be more of an inside presence this season with the addition of freshman point guard John Wall to new coach John Calipari’s offense.

Singler averaged 16.5 points and 7.7 rebounds last season for the Blue Devils but his role should change to more of a perimeter one this season.

#92 Pretty sure Collins outscored Lucas in both games and had more assits in the two games combined. That doesn't seem like Collins was "owned" by Lucas at all. However, Collins did have turnover problems in both games but that was because of Walton who's no longer playing. And, K-Dawg, the Big 10 have several above average teams this year but only MIchigan St. can be considered an elite team, Purdue is good but they are ranked high by default since they return nearly everyone from last year and had some success towards the end of the season. The Big 12 has two teams, Kansas and Texas, that has a legitimate shot at winning the national championship. As far as the other teams in the Big 12 goes they can beat potentially beat any team in the Big 10 save for Michigan St. on any given night.

go kentucky man the fever is building here we love coach cal he is exactly what we need I agree with the poster who said he is going to be watched so closely he couldnt cheat but we all know all college recruiting is shady its not really the colleges its the people trying to make money off these future wage earners the ncaa should get real and take that big stick out of their a#@. Some wages or financial aid would curtail most of this or some at least. I think daniel cousins is going to be a big force on this team and bledsoe is almost as good as wall those two together hold on. Wall is rondo like but Rondo was probably quicker but hes (Wall) a better scorer. John Hood might surprise us also a kentucky boy and they always play the hardest. Harrison is a big guy also. Patterson is only gonna be better. Tennessee looks pretty good missippi state also thats the thing about basketball any night a good team can be beat but talent especally in tournament to win 6 u got to have it. Sec a tough conference to play in.

First of all, the Big Ten isn't slow, they play good defense. Second, Indiana and Iowa could easily beat teams like Georgia, Vanderbilt and Arkansas. And anybody who says the Big 12 or Pac-10 is better than the Big 10 better remember this isn't football, it's basketball. The Big East is declining unlike the Big Ten. There are teams like Minnesota, Michigan, Penn St and N'western who are all capable of going to the big dance along with MSU, Purdue, Ohio St and Illinois who will make it easily. MSU hasn't folded, they've only been beaten by better teams such as N Car. But they beat #1 seed Louisville, #1 seed Conneticut and #3 seed Kansas twice last year under pressure situations. If you look at the schedule of SEC teams like Kentucky this year, they play five ranked teams. MSU plays seven ranked teams, three of them top ten. Kentucky only plays two. Not to mention they're playing they're whole season behind a freshman who'll probably suck. The ACC is better, but the Big Ten is second. After them would be the Big East, Big 12, SEC and Pac-10.

To Matt K #92- um...didn't KU win the national title, like 2 years ago? And to R #93 - how about you take your Big Ten blinders off and look at reality. Michigan State was solid last year and will be this year, but other than Purdue there isn't another legit team in the Big Ten...it's a league filled with mediocrity and they only get mentioned in the talk for march because they beat up on eachother and only score 35 points in a game twice in one season. I'm a KU fan and think highly of the Big 12 but at least I can acknowledge that the ACC and Big East are probably better conferences.

Justin and Justin....A couple of Timberlake wannabees probably? You have to be kidding me. All season long last year the Big East was supposedly the best conference and what happened? MSU took down there top two teams in embarrassing fashion. If you don't know anything about college basketball than just don't post.

Bottom Line....Kalin Lucas owned Sherron Collins in 2 matchups against Kansas last year and carried the Spartans to the national championship where he was dominated by Lawson. Lawson is gone leaving Lucas as not only the best guard but the best player in the nation. He has a pure jump shot and can take anyone to the whole. Tough to stop that. The best thing about him is he carried MSU as a sophomore. Lucas haters will see in March as will Big Ten haters.

#91, the big ten ALWAYS folds in big games? Hmmm... Kansas, Uconn, Louisville might disagree with you. 3 big games that the Big Ten recently won.

I agree with Justin C (#90). The big ten always folds under pressure when playing in the big games. That's why no big ten team will make it to a national championship game this year, honestly

I'm just putting it out there for everyone to agree with: The Big Ten is NOT the best conference in basketball (or any sport) and there are 4 leagues far superior. Big 12, ACC, Pac-10, Big East. And as much as I dislike the hype the SEC gets every year I would bet that every Big 10 school (Other than Michigan St or Purdue) would lose to a bottom team in the SEC. The Big Ten is slow and ugly to watch.

For people jumping on the "Cal will cheat" bandwagon, here is my one true argument, and I am not even a fan of any team in the N.C. argument this year.. With the watchful eye of the NCAA's governing body there is no way he screws this up.. He's got the bull by the horns now, and its only gonna get worse for the rest of the country.. TO assume his crookidness just makes you look jealous or envious, especially Kansas fans.. Take a look at your championship team... Ha Ha Ha Ha, those guys were all cheating.. Read up on the "ALLEGATIONS" surrounding that squad... Jesus, dont throw stones, or the NCAA may pick your team to investigate next..

The great thing about college basketball is that unlike college football there is a play-off at the end of the year. This makes all the idiot haters who spend so much of their time spewing the "this conference is better than that conference" crap out of their pie hole irrelevant.

It's sad that most of the posts on these message boards are nothing but small minded haters hiding behind a keyboard spreading hate instead of contributing something of substantial value to the conversation.

In the end the best teams from each conference get to play each other and ultimately they all have a chance to win. It really does not matter if the sixth place Big Ten team can hold its own against the sixth place SEC team, at the end of the year we all know who is the best.

Unfortunately for us the vile nature of college football and the BCS simply gives these morons a forum for their hate because the right games are never played so they can never be called out for how ludicrous their arguments are.

Looking forward to a great basketball season!

3 forwards and a center in the preseason All-American team? that seems like a lot of forwards in the preseason all-american team. only one guard on the preseason all-american team is weak sauce. Put Scottie Reynolds in there and take someone else out or in the second team.

DMiller - Sorry, man! UCLA is the greatest college bball program of all time until Ky, UNC or some other schools get to 12 before the Bruins. Yeah, UCLA last won in 1995. However, Brian B. was talking about the greatest of all time, not the greatest in recent years or of a certain decade.

Yankees won most of their 26 titles when there were 16 teams in the major league in the 30s to 50s. Celtics DOMINATED 1960s when there were only 8 teams in the NBA. They are still the G.O.A.T. in their leagues, until Cardinals or Lakers overtake them.

Brian B......UCLA won most of their championships when there were only 16 teams in the tourament and they got to play probably on their home court. So they had an advanage over everyone else! You ever notice that since there are 65 teams now in the Road to the Final Four UCLA hasn't won every year??
