Le Moyne stuns Syracuse 82-79

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Christopher Johnson and Laurence Ekperigin hooted and hollered as they skipped off Jim Boeheim Court, huge smiles creasing their faces and seemingly as stunned as the Syracuse Orange at what had just transpired.

Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game Tuesday night.

“We’ve got an experienced group,” Le Moyne head coach Steve Evans said. “Did we ever think that a day like this would happen? Probably not. But we put together a game plan. We didn’t want to play Syracuse’s way. We wanted to play our way. It was just one of those days for Le Moyne basketball. The kids will remember this forever.”

Wes Johnson, who led Syracuse with 34 points, hit a 3 from the left corner to put Syracuse ahead 79-78 with 22 seconds left.

Then Christopher Johnson responded with his sixth 3-pointer of the game, which came from the left side after Syracuse’s Kris Joseph backed off defensively.

“We were sort of out of whack a little bit,” Christopher Johnson said. “Everyone was rushing. But as soon as I caught the ball, I saw an opening and I just let it fly. Luckily, it went in.”

After Wes Johnson missed a 3, Can Ozkaner added a free throw with 1.3 seconds left for Le Moyne and Syracuse had its first preseason exhibition loss since a setback against the Harlem Globetrotters six years ago.

“Le Moyne really outplayed us from the beginning of the game to the end,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “They (the Orange) are very, very young mentally. They really have got to grow up. We couldn’t stop them on the dribble. That’s something we’ve been looking at in practice.”

Ekperigin had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Damani Corbin had 11 points and five assists, and Kevin Roth added 10 points for Le Moyne, which outscored Syracuse 42-30 in the paint.

Andy Rautins had 13 points and Rick Jackson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Orange, who led 47-37 early in the second half.

But the Dolphins, who play across town, never let down. Three 3s by Christopher Johnson helped narrow the gap and a three-point play by Ekperigin gave Le Moyne a 56-55 lead with 8:41 remaining.

The Dolphins, who repeatedly took advantage of Syracuse’s man-to-man defense with drives and back-door cuts, went up 76-71 after Ekperigin converted a lob from Corbin with 57.9 seconds left and held on.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Wes Johnson, in his first season after transferring from Iowa State. “Hopefully, we can learn from this and move in the right direction.” “It’s just embarrassing the way we played,” said Rautins, born and raised in Syracuse. “It’s embarrassing to ourselves and our fans. It wasn’t luck that they won. They came out and beat us fair and square.”

Evans said he wasn’t really looking forward to reading and watching the news on Wednesday.

“I feel bad that the story tomorrow will be, ‘What’s wrong with Syracuse basketball?’ I don’t think there’s anything wrong,” he said. “They’ve got tremendous players. It’s an exhibition game. They’re young. They’re going to be terrific.”

im a huge cuse fan have been since i was 8 years old ... but this was the worse lost ive ever seen ... even worse than last year when coppin state made a 60 footer to beat them cause that was just pure luck not skill... lemoyne looked like they knew what they were doing but come on you have kids that dream to go to syracuse not lemoyne... pretty pathetic even if it was an exhibtion game... good game by wes johnson though very impressive

practice games mean nothing, it's how you play when it counts for real. take it as a learning experience and move on. The chase for 8 is on. GO UK!

Syracuse need not fret about losing a preseason game. In fact, it may be a sign of greatness.

The 1966-67 UCLA Bruins (under Wooden of course) went 30-0 and won the NCAA Championship.

Yet, that team DID lose once...in the preseason, at home, in front of a sell-out crowd.

Great trivia question...Who did that undefeated, national championship team lose to in the preseason???

Answer: The 1966-67 UCLA Freshman Basketball Team. Remember, back then Freshmen couldn't play varsity. And that 66-67 freshman team had this guy in the middle named Lew Alcindor, and someone on the perimeter named Lucius Allen.

So THEY lost to a lowly freshman team and went undefeated with a National Championship. Syracuse at least lost to a DII school so things are really looking up!

what else have we come to expect from Cuse? They play the softest non-conf schedule in the universe EVERY SINGLE SEASON, and they struggle to beat and/or lose to a few powderpuffs EVERY SINGLE SEASON.

It's really amazing what could be accomplished if some of the big-name recruits Boeheim gets went to other schools and actually learned how to work hard and win. I just don't understand why kids go there anymore. They are who we thought they were. lol

Every body have fun with this one? Hope so. This loss only means they will drop out of the top 25 and that there focus is in need of attention. They will respond and yes you'll see them in March, Maybe not in Late March!!!!!!! I've seen alot of good teams loose games already marked as won as this should have been just to come back and have a great year. Now that I've been nice, LETS ALL LAUGH OUR A$$ OFF Cause its gona take a Great Year to over come this EMBARISMENT!!!!

I am a diehard 'Cuse fan but part of me was pulling for the Dolphins..their coach is a local "kid" who coached his butt off. Congrats to Lemoyne! Jimmy will use this as a learning experience, and 'Cuse will find a way to win 20 games yet again. Coach Evans from Lemoyne will soon be a Division 1 coach..

Syracuse will prolly finish last or near last in the BigEast. No BE tourny unless they need them
    to fill seats at MSG.

why are people making a big deal over this?? and the coach said that the kids will remember this forever!? seriously? thats sad when the highlight of their careers is a preseason win. The Le Moyne kids played this like the final four and for Syracuse it was just the last preseason game they wanted to get over with thats all, write an article like this if it happens in the regular season

This is what happens when an underdog completely focuses on this game in practice and the other doesn't seem to prepare at all and just assumes they will blow out another team. Anytime that happens, the team with better fundamentals is generally always going to be in it until the end. There's no reason for Syracuse to panic just yet since this is just a preseason game and doesn't make any difference in the NCAA selection, but I bet the practices this week are alot of fun, complete with running bleachers and suicides until somebody gets sick...and then running some more.

This is great! My neighbor across the street is a MAJOR 'cuse fan. Flying the flags, even has an obnoxious orange car with CUSE1 license plates. I'm certainly going to have to go over to visit this evening. And offer condolences (kashnicker).

I am not a big Syracuse fan (KU alum here) but I respect any win by a team who deserves it. If Syracuse got outplayed, so be it. The Orange came into a game with KU last year and beat the Jayhawks and my congratulations were to them. Although it stings to lose against a team you think you "should" beat, it is this sort of loss that will only benefit Syracuse over the rest of the season. I didn't see the game but read Boehiem's comments about the Dolphins exposing the Orange's poor 1:1 defence and dribble defence. Now there is a motivation for the Cuse players to work on this stuff in practice.

Better to have a close call or a loss now than an easy blowout. Also, you would rather lose a game like this early in the season than in the final tourney. As I read, I notice comments about the Orange's youth. A loss like this will help them grow up fast.

Good luck to the Orange this year.

It happens... I played for the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. In 1995 we were a 11-16 Division II school. We beat UNC-Willmington which made it to the NCAA tourney that year, in the consilation championship of a preseason tournament. It was not an exhibition. Teams were playing for rankings. At least this was an exhitbition game, which are mainly to figure out what they have..

Division II schools generally play better basketball because they don't get the same athletes as the big schools..

As a Cuse fan this was extremely disappointing. Jackson, Onuaku and Johnson have the potential to be the best frontcourt in b-ball. Mark my words- Wes Johnson will be a force in the Big East. The bad news - Flynn was a huge loss in the backcourt but I did not see Harris and Devo leaving as major impacts. Unfortunately they were the emotional lifts (often Devo had a big mouth) and this is now lacking on the 2009 team. Rautins should be the leader but clearly he would rather sit back and miss threes (as usual). I don't know if we have any fire, leadership or clutchness on the team. We will find out against Cal and UNC.
