Nothing in LSU's first six games suggests the Tigers have any hope of upsetting a top-three rival on the road. This was a team that struggled mightily against Washington in the opener and required a dramatic goal line stand to win at Mississippi State -- without defensive and special teams touchdowns that overcame the Tigers' offensive malaise in those games, there wasn't much to suggest they could win anywhere of any consequence. After coming back to beat Georgia in a game that featured zero touchdowns in the first three quarters, LSU returned home to narrowly avoid being shut out by Florida, 13-3, without coming close to the end zone. The offense still ranks dead last in the SEC in total yards per game.

For the optimists, though, there are the last two weeks, in which the LSU offense has found a little life off a post-Florida bye: The Tigers racked up 31 points against Auburn, their best output against the division's other Tigers since 2002, and hung 42 points on overmatched Tulane, their first game this year with 40 points or (not and) 400 total yards. Jordan Jefferson is emerging as one of the most efficient passers in the SEC, and his backup, true freshman Russell Sheppard, is coming on as a dangerous big-play threat as a runner, with long touchdowns runs in each of the last two games to complement the between-the-tackles thumping of regular tailback Charles Scott.

And by all appearances, this is the right time to catch Alabama. The Tide's surprisingly balanced offense through their 4-0 start in September has disappeared into a cloud of dust as they get deeper into the SEC slate, carried to a great extent by the Heisman-worthy legs of Mark Ingram but still held out of the end zone entirely by Tennessee and in three of four quarters by both Ole Miss and South Carolina. Quarterback Greg McElroy has looked increasingly like the "game manager" holding down 'Bama's rankings in the preseason, and the perfect season has looked increasingly vulnerable as the weeks go by.

If you're convinced enough that the Tigers and Tide have each come that far in opposite directions over that short a period of time, LSU might well be worth your bet; if so, they're also on the verge of a late push for the SEC and national championships.

A nice thought, but I'm not sure how anyone can get past the Tigers' last effort against an elite, top-ranked defense and still consider them a threat to bring down an outfit as consistent and not prone to breakdowns as Alabama. The impotent attack on display against Florida isn't even a threat to score a touchdown against the similarly monolithic Tide D, which has matched the Gators for defensive dominance across the board on a weekly basis -- if Ingram's late fumble hadn't reopened the door for a late Tennessee touchdown, it would have been the Tide's third straight game without allowing a touchdown, an amazing streak that definitely should not be jeopardized by the conference's lowest-ranked offense.

Still, although its main responsibility here is not turning the ball over, there is some pressure on Alabama's offense to rekindle some of the spark that led to big games against Virginia Tech and Arkansas. Nick Saban said after the escape against the Vols that his team was "tired" after eight straight games without a week off, a plausible excuse for the offense's general decline and the steadily closing margins of victory. If McElroy continues to struggle with the downfield passing game, though, and the offense in general continues to settle for field goals after a bye week -- especially a bye week in which Saban specifically called for a more aggressive approach to stretching defenses vertically -- the malaise of the last few weeks will begin to look less like a temporary slide than a permanent cross to bear in the stretch run.

To all SEC fans that read this....go read Olin Buchanan's mailbag this week! It was another fine example of how SEC fans think about there conference this week and how overrated most of them truly believe it to be. I will not argue that LSU, Florida and Alabama are not good teams, because they are. But they are not so much better than everyone else, that no one else can compete. And I think LSU beats Bama today then Florida in the SEC championship game and throws the whole BCS into a topsy turvy spin. At least that is my hope because I want to see the BCS implode and taking a 1 loss SEC team over one of the unbeatens will do that, all I can do now is sit back and let chaos rule.

Amen brother. I looked at Florida's schedule to date, the only team in the SEC they have played that has a recored over .500 is LSU and they have barely won two of them. Bama went up against a 3-3 team, scored 4 field goals and had no first downs in the entire third quarter and they are the number 2 team in the country, hardly. It was said Boise State is asking for a big confernce team to play them in a preseason game in 2011, no one from the SEC would bite. The SEC has one of the most lame preseason schedules in college football, and when they do play big conferences they are only winning at a .500 mark, hardly dominant. Look at Utah last season. If the SEC sends a one loss team to the BCS championship and leaves Boise State, TCU, Cincinnati out if they go undefeated it would be clear that they are all about the TV ratings and money and not about picking the best team in college football. Time for a play-off. Time to pull from conference winners and let real games be played in preseason, otherwise its more just hot air and hype and hearing about the "glory" (cough) of the SEC by the talking media heads.

Bama won tonight, but I don't think they beat LSU. I saw several calls go against LSU in that one or not get called at all. For example the interception with 6:30ish to go in the 4th was pretty clearly an pick yet somehow stayed with Bama who ended up putting the game out of reach. The toe looked in, but regardless of that fact, he had clear possession in his hands before the left foot ever came off the ground, regardless of the 2nd toe. Why don't we just give Florida and Bama wins the next few weeks, save the wear and tear on the players and just have them play the title game. Its pretty clear that both teams are getting all the calls right now. Like the no call on Cody against Tennessee. He clearly took his helmet off while the play was still live which is an unsportsmanlike conduct foul, would have been 15 yards and a free play with 0 time left on the clock as the game cannot end on a defensive penalty. So, again I say lets just say hell with the actual rules, give them undefeated regular seasons and let them play the SEC title game so we can just do away with the notion that somehow this is all being handled fairly.

Adam, stop whining like a girl. Both of those calls would have made NO DIFFERENCE in the outcome of the game.
Bama out-gained LSU by 200 yards and yet you still say they didn't "beat" LSU. What a joke. Keep making excuses and being bitter about your team's performance this year. Your tears and whining fuel my laughter.
