So it turns out the umpire who delivered the much-clicked hit to Stephen Garcia at the LSU 5-yard line during Tigers' win over South Carolina Saturday is no stranger to bringing down ballcarriers in the open field: Wilbur Hackett Jr. was a Parade All-American out of Louisville and a three-year starting linebacker at Kentucky from 1968-70, where he was the first black captain in SEC history. The conference won't say whether Hackett will be back on the field this weekend, per its usual policy, but he won't be facing any discipline:

... the SEC office believes Hackett was protecting himself and plans to take no disciplinary action on the veteran official. Rogers Redding, the conference's coordinator of football officials, reviewed the tape of the play and thought it was inadvertent contact.

"Garcia changes his direction just a tad, which ties up the umpire just a tad and makes it look a lot worse than it really was," SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said.

Of course, we didn't have to wait long for the inevitable evolution of one of the most-viewed YouTube clips of the weekend:

It should be noted that the impact of this gaffe on the game was zero: Carolina scored on a 4th-and-1 dive a couple plays later to go up 17-7 heading into the half, after which they punted four times and turned the ball over twice en route to blowing the lead. USC held the ball for all of 2:13 in the fourth quarter, losing seven yards on seven plays. Rather than worrying about any complaint, the Gamecocks will be spending their time this week figuring out the blitz after giving up a season-high six sacks.

The step toward the runner is the give away. It was on purpose. He'd have been fading back if he was just doing his job

LSU should be investigated for offering bribes of alcoholic beverages to referees.

Who cares, the guy is only human. Instincts take over sometimes. I'm glad the SEC isn't going to punish him. Very funny though!

Looks like a solid tackle to me. Man the refs in the SEC have stunk all year. Almost every crew has changed the outcome of each game.

This was either no accident or poor judgement. It would have taken a lot less effort to move out of the way than it was to sqaure up and tackle the QB.

Jesus, the referee even steped right towards the Qb. NVM, this wasnt poor judgement. The guy wanted to tackle the QB. Maybe the QB and the ref were fighting during the match.

Just goes to show, if you wanna play in the SEC you gotta come ready to play every single week. We've got the fastest offenses, the toughest defenses, and the hardest hitting refs in College Football!

If I was the runner, I would hide my head in shame. Just knowing I was knocked on my butt by an unprotected referee while I was in full pads, running full speed????? Come on, even if it was on purpose, the ref should not have been able to have taken this wuss out. Time to find a new running back, one who can stand up to a middle aged, unprotected, overweight guy in the middle of the field. W-I-M-P!!!!!

clearly an accident!! you people are ridiculous. He's trying to get out of the way. who would do that on purpose? i could see how some could think he purposely hit him, but you same people obviously don't play or watch enough football to figure this out. Jeez!

Matt J, they were playing a game not a match, and Bill G it was the quarterback not a running back.

What a joke! Typical conference response, refusing to police their own. How much more blatant does it have to be and just look at his facial expression afterward. If they ignore the "visual evidence" how can you trust the replays in the games?????? ALL of this stuff, including the media, is starting to turn me off to all sports. The games really don't mean much anymore with all the "stuff" surrounding them.

The only reason I see this being seen as an accident is the fact that Garcia did change his direction towards the ref. If it was me in his shoes I would lean in to the hit too. It's an instinct that was made in less than a second to lean in or dive away.

Accident??!! Are you kidding me?! What kind of knuckle heads are watching the video and giving their judgement??!! That is totally ridiculous. If I were the team's coach, I would "request" that he never do one of my games again!! And the college itself should do the same.

If this wasn't an intentional hit, I don't know what is! SEC should be ashamed to declare it was accidental.

if you seen the other video with the different camera angle, from the back, the runner clearly shifted course into the refs way and the ref just portected himself.

did they get a pic of him sitting on the sidelines afterward drinking a beer? maybe he was reenacting the commercial? maybe he is the ref from the commercial and forgot this was a real game? maybe he was made because xlite went under and he wanted his shot at kimbo slice too?
    whatever the reason... he's guilty.

well, even if it was an accident i bet the amount of crazies out there hunting him will be punishment enough. I think if he thought the QB was coming after him yeah go ahead lay a shoulder in. but the QB was trying to go around instead. nice tackle without pads though. those defenders could breath on this kid and he'd fall over.lol

you have got to be kidding me? An accident? That's one of the best feet planting, shoulder throwing blocks I've seen in a long time! This guy should change careers and and become a defensive coach! I can not believe nothing is going to be done about this. Clearing someone is covering up for this guy. If not, who ever was responsible for reviewing it needs to see an eye doctor immediately!

He is tracking the QB and moves in front of him. He had plenty of time to get out of the way if this was just a simple case of being out of position. Even if it didn't have an impact on the game and the player was about to be tackled any way, it is still an ethical violation and is incredibly unprofessional. This ref should be severely punished, although I don't think he will, to prevent other refs from trying something similar.

I agree with everyone else, he pursued the guy like a linebacker. he took a few side steps and when the ball carier was close he dropped his shoulder and made the hit. he actually leans into the hit too which would mean it was on purpose and not on accident. Maybe he had a flashback to his linebacker days at Kentucky and thought he was playing for real. but anyone with a pair of eyes and a brain can see and tell that, that hit was intentional. plus isn't the ref supposed to do his best to get out of the way of a play? if that was the case when Garcia changed lanes he should have tried to move out of the way not lower his shoulder and deliver a hit.
I don't know what tape the sec officials were watching but the several I have seen all show hackett hit garcia on purpose. watch the tape again there is enough space for garcia to run by the official without hitting him. Hackett actually leaned into the hit. and in my opinion the guy should be suspended for a few games and maybe get a psyche evaluation. there was no need for that hit.
