Indiana has 20 all-time Big Ten conference titles. Purdue has 21. And in case you weren't familiar with this fact (I had to look it up in an encyclopedia just now), Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke would like to remind you.

Discussing Purdue's 2009 Big Ten tourney win as a reminder of how good Purdue basketball is, or something -- the explanation for this quote beyond "tweak Indiana" is still a little fuzzy to me -- Burke dropped this little bit of not-exactly-friendly trash talk:

“It should not come as a surprise, because Purdue leads the conference with 21 Big Ten championships,” he told the Star. “Nobody else has 21, not even the people down south of Indianapolis.”

"The people down South of Indianapolis" is an obvious reference to Indiana University, which, as I said up there in the first sentence, has a mere 20 conference titles in its history, one shy of Purdue's conference-leading 21. Purdue has a chance to widen that margin this year; Robbie Hummel and E-Twaun Moore and the gang will make Purdue a legitimate national contender, while Indiana, though improved, will be fighting a huge uphill battle to finish .500 in the Big Ten.

I'm afraid to say it, but in the short term, IU fans have to take this one on the chin. Should they need any retaliatory ammo, they can merely point to the five banners hanging on the wall in Assembly Hall. Purdue, with just two Final Four appearances (and no national titles) in its illustrious history, might have a tough time countering that one.

It's laughable that the pu ad would resort to kicking a down and more storied program in this manner, but typical of the classless boilers!!! Go Hoosiers!!!

Purdue actually does have one national championship, though it was before post-season play (1932).

As a Purdue fan, this was funny but totally unnecessary. Indiana has national championships. Purdue has one from before they even count.
Another good dig would be the winning record against every single team in the Big Ten - Ohio State (82-81) and Illinois (88-85) are the only ones even close to a positive record against us.

He's just doing his job. He needs to generate "haters". When was the last time you saw a "haters" post on ANY board about Purdue??? I can't think of any -- even here, where the opportunity is being handed to you, no haters.
Only the really good programs get haters. Usually the more haters the better your program. He just needs to generate some "Purdue sucks" or similarly clever posts to bring Purdue some respect.

This will help the rivalry again, but nothing could ever match a good IU - PU game with Gene (and his crispy tanned wife) against the General. I do agree with #5 that it STINKS in west lafayette. Go hoosiers.

Dumb article, can he not find a real trash talking story? He made one comment about the amount of conference titles... Where did you dig this great story up Eamonn?
On the other hand...purdue better enjoy it while it lasts, IU will be elite in 2

It's a good thing iu struck out on most of their coaching candidates and had to hire a guy who's been past the second round of the ncaa tournament twice. iu doesnt stand a chance against Purdue for the forseeable future.

I must admit that this article made me laugh. I tell you what PU can win every big ten title from now to the end of time and IU can win 5 championships every 35 years and i will be happy. But i also must admit that i do root for PU on the occasional two days a year. When they play UK and DUKE, other than that the BOILERS can get stomped without me batting an eye. I would like to say that i do love the class that PU has with Hummel, Moore, Johnson, and i am hoping that is what we will be talking about with IU in 2 years. With this class if they stay together for 3-4 years they have the chance to do some great things. PU is one of the early favorites to win the Big Ten. IU and PU play each other twice this year i beleive, so for all you BOILERS, dont get mad when the HOOSIERS steal one from you this year, because in 2011 both games will be ours. See you guys at Robert Montgomery Knight Court. GO HOOSIERS and Praise INDIANA BASKETBALL

"...they can merely point to the five banners hanging on the wall in Assembly Hall"
As if IU fans need to be reminded that they can resort to this tired defense of their has-been program. Pretty sure it's on the first page of the handout you get when joining the Hoosier bandwagon. It's especially humorous when it comes from the latest generation of delusional Indiana fans who weren't around to see even one of those five championships. Oh well, it's good to know we're in your heads and the season hasn't event started yet.
Enjoy THIS season. I know I will.
