The Dagger - NCAAB

It's media day season, meaning coaches spend at least 30 percent of their time talking about their teams -- how they have to get tougher, usually -- and 70 percent talking about why their conference is the best conference that has ever played basketball, ever, so screw you, we're all going to the NCAA tournament, shut up. Last year it was Bruce Weber on the Big Ten. This year's most notable victim of delusion? John Calipari:

No, dude. No. If this was a coach from the Big Ten, sure. The ACC, maybe. The Big East? I'd listen. But not the SEC. Come on now.

Without spending too much time on this -- because everyone knows this is silly, right? I don't have to explain why this is silly? -- let's take a preseason look at the SEC. Barring catastrophe, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi State are all tournament shoe-ins. But then things really drop off, and you get a bunch of maybe teams in the mix. Vanderbilt is the best of these teams; they have a chance to be much better than the preseason consensus would allow. But then, who? LSU? Not a sure thing, not with all that lost talent. Florida? Maybe, if Kenny Boynton is a star, but this is a pretty big maybe (and even if he is, is that enough to carry the Gators)? South Carolina? Eh. Arkansas? Eh. Alabama? No. Auburn, Ole Miss, and Georgia: no.

The usual disclaimer here is that it's not to say this couldn't happen, or that it won't. Anything can happen. But as it stands today, the SEC is not a deep conference, and any politicking to the opposite should be promptly called out for what it is. Sorry, Coach Cal, but you don't have the votes.

Wow, your analysis came down to this: "I don't believe Calipari but I'm not going to take the time dissecting the other teams to see if he might be on to something or not. I'm just going to vent based on the SEC's reputation alone." The funny thing is, in your post, you named four SEC that could very well make the Big Dance, but somehow, it's inconceivable three or four other teams could have decent seasons as well.
    Perish the thought.

@christopher r: It's not inconceivable that 3 or 4 other teams could have decent seasons. It's inconceivable that they could all have "decent" seasons, and then make the tournament. In order to have 7 or 8 teams make the tournament, you need to have a couple teams of serious national championship caliber, and then those teams need to have a hard time in their conference. You also need a lot of teams coming in with respect, be it from superior recruting or strong finishes and lots of returners. The selection committee is pretty hard on the 5th team out of a conference, let alone the 7th. Reputation alone is enough to make Cal's prediction almost impossible.

The other week during all the Midnight Madness stuff, they talking heads were talking about the SEC, specifically the SEC East, and talking about how competitive it should be this year with four teams likely to make the tournament: Kentucky, UT, UF, and Vandy (maybe USC was thrown in there too, which would make 5). Then you consider Miss. State will probably make the tournament and LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas all will probably make a case, and that is 9 teams right there. I don't think 7-8 is that far fetched.

Cal will say anything to take away the black cloud over his halo. Maybe he needs to worry about orange clown Bruce, he will snitch on him in no time.

The conference as a whole will be better thanks to the best players staying in school and passing on the draft. Eamonn ruled out Ole Miss; however, they will be highly likely to make the tournament given that they will have the best backcourt in the conference. UK, Fla, Miss St., and UT will be locks. Ole Miss, USC, and Vandy have a legitimate chance, which puts the conference at seven. I don't know about an eight getting in though.

I am a SEC fan (UK fan) and I dont think there is any way -8- teams get in...I believe 6 have a shot.....Ky/Tenn/Miss.St. are "locks"...S.Car./Vandy/Fla/Ole Miss/Ark/LSU will be bubble teams.....-3- of them might get in...Every one is expecting big things from UK this year, and I am too...Tenn is flying under the radar....They greatly under-achieved last year, but they basically return the whole team...Some "experts" had them rated as high as #3 preseason last year and all had them in the top 10...BEWARE!!! Miss.St will be a solid team ranked about 15-20, especially if Sidney is cleared to play....Big 12 will be best conference....Dont be surprised if Texas wins it...I expect Purdue to win Big 10....Big East down some this year....At least -5- good teams, not quite great...Villanova best, Uconn/Gtown/Louisville/Notre Dame close...4 teams with most talent in no order....Texas-Kansas-Kentucky-North Carolina.....Rip my thinking to shreds, readers

People should realize 6 teams from the SEC making the tourney = 8 teams from the Big East, simply based on conference size (12 to 16).. So when 8 teams from the Big East made it, it was a shocker, but when the SEC sent 6 the same year, it wasn't as amazing... I went to Seton Hall and still believe the Big East are top to bottom the best conference but I'm a big UK fan and the fact is, 8 teams is a bit of a stretch by Calipari. 6 is more like it.
