  • SL: Arenas says Wizards have 'hidden agendas'; VC shoos boos

Each weekday morning, BDL serves up a handful of NBA-related stories to digest with your rum chica rum chicken.

Tim Price, NBA.com: "Emotions on the Washington Wizards seem to be boiling over ... The Wizards (3-9) have lost eight of nine games. Against San Antonio they shot a season-worst 33 percent. Perhaps more embarrassingly, they had just as many turnovers as assists (nine) heading into the fourth quarter before finishing with 12 assists to nine turnovers by the end of the game. Gilbert Arenas said players on the team had 'hidden agendas,' noting that eight players on the team are free agents following the season. 'I guess when you start losing everyone wants to start pointing fingers everywhere else,' Arenas said. 'I converted my game to try to get people involved, but at the end of the day, to be honest, this is the same team since three years ago. We added a couple of pieces, but everybody else is basically the same player. I'm sitting here thinking 'Do I have to go in attack mode like I was two years ago to get us over this hump?' I hope not. I hope we're strong enough mentally that we can get over this.'"

Brian Schmitz, Orlando Sentinel: "Not surprisingly, Vince Carter quickly turned down the opportunity to be, ahem, honored by his former team, the Toronto Raptors, on Sunday. He didn't turn down the chance to beat the Canadian club again and remind Raptors fans of his bittersweet legacy with some live highlights. Carter led the Magic to a fifth consecutive win with a 104-96 triumph against the Raptors, ultimately silencing a crowd that has booed his every return to Air Canada Centre the past five seasons. [...] The Raptors have been celebrating their 15th anniversary as a franchise by honoring former players and coaches with video tributes during timeouts. Given the acrimonious back story of the relationship, the Raptors contacted the Magic to see if Carter might be a willing participant (or target) for the tribute. George Galante, director of communications for the Magic, said he asked Carter if the Raptors could honor him, but Carter declined. 'Why would I want to do it? You heard it out there,' Carter said. 'They came to me. It just didn't make sense. Actually, it wasn't as loud as it has been. It used to be deafening.'"

  • Game to pay attention to: Raptors vs. Nuggets

    Toronto at Denver

You think Carmelo's licking his chops, thinking about going up against the NBA's worst defense?

Well, he isn't. He doesn't go anywhere near chops these days, which is why he's in such good shape, which is why he's having a career year, and this is also the reason why Carmelo turns just about any team defense into the NBA's worst team defense.

A bit of a problem here, though. The Nuggets are going to have to guard what has been the NBA's best offense, thus far.

Can they handle that? Sure they can. Will they try to get into a Raptors-styled shootout, and ignore their own defensive abilities? That's the question.

Denver can be baited. Then can fly out of character, winning character, rather quickly. They could also keep it together long enough to win a championship. Good thing they have an even-keeled coach like George Karl around to ... oh, wait. Went down that path again.

Toronto? They bring the show. The other night, against Phoenix? They brought the defense. We could have a great one, here.

Denver Nuggets: 7-3, 95.4 possessions per game (sixth most in the NBA), 111.3 points scored per 100 possessions (fifth), 105.5 points allowed per 100 possessions (17th).

Toronto Raptors: 5-5, 92 possessions per game (19th), 116.2 points scored per 100 possessions (first), 115.1 points allowed per 100 possessions (30th).
