Spurs training camp opened Sept. 30 without Robert Horry. Chances are, it will end without him, too.

The question is: Will the same be true of the NBA regular season and, perhaps more important, the postseason?

Ending an offseason of uncertainty, Horry acknowledged on the first day of camp that, in a phone conversation with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, he was told the club would like to go in a new direction this season.

But "would like" and "will" are two different things, so let's not slap a "retired" label on the unsigned free agent just yet.

"He told me there were some other guys they wanted to bring in," the 16-year veteran said of his lay-our-cards-on-the-table chat with Popovich.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich didn't care about the outcome of the Spurs' preseason opener against Houston on Thursday night. He was more interested in seeing his new players in action for the first time. Ron Artest had 18 points and five rebounds and Luis Scola added 13 points as the Rockets beat the short-handed Spurs 85-78 on Thursday night.

The Spurs signed forward Charles Gaines and waived guard Brian Morrison on Wednesday. The 6-foot-9 Gaines spent the past four seasons in Europe, mostly recently with Galatasaray Cafecrown in the Turkish TBL League. He averaged 12.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in 28 regular-season games and 12.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in 17 ULEB Cup games.

There was no noticeable limp when Manu Ginobili walked into the San Antonio Spurs training facility Monday. Even better, there was no sign of bad feelings from his teammates. Ginobili, who had surgery on his left ankle in early September, could miss at least two months of the season. Though off crutches and out of a protective boot, he's still got plenty of rehab.

The San Antonio Spurs signed first-round pick George Hill on Tuesday. The Spurs took Hill with the 26th selection, but didn't have to sign him. His agent, Michael Whitaker, said the former IUPUI star participated in summer league with the Spurs and had been working out in San Antonio since Aug. 18, despite the fact that he hadn't officially signed.
