Each weekday morning, BDL serves up a handful of NBA-related stories to digest with your rum chica rum chicken.
Tim Price, NBA.com: "Emotions on the Washington Wizards seem to be boiling over ... The Wizards (3-9) have lost eight of nine games. Against San Antonio they shot a season-worst 33 percent. Perhaps more embarrassingly, they had just as many turnovers as assists (nine) heading into the fourth quarter before finishing with 12 assists to nine turnovers by the end of the game. Gilbert Arenas said players on the team had 'hidden agendas,' noting that eight players on the team are free agents following the season. 'I guess when you start losing everyone wants to start pointing fingers everywhere else,' Arenas said. 'I converted my game to try to get people involved, but at the end of the day, to be honest, this is the same team since three years ago. We added a couple of pieces, but everybody else is basically the same player. I'm sitting here thinking 'Do I have to go in attack mode like I was two years ago to get us over this hump?' I hope not. I hope we're strong enough mentally that we can get over this.'"
Brian Schmitz, Orlando Sentinel: "Not surprisingly, Vince Carter quickly turned down the opportunity to be, ahem, honored by his former team, the Toronto Raptors, on Sunday. He didn't turn down the chance to beat the Canadian club again and remind Raptors fans of his bittersweet legacy with some live highlights. Carter led the Magic to a fifth consecutive win with a 104-96 triumph against the Raptors, ultimately silencing a crowd that has booed his every return to Air Canada Centre the past five seasons. [...] The Raptors have been celebrating their 15th anniversary as a franchise by honoring former players and coaches with video tributes during timeouts. Given the acrimonious back story of the relationship, the Raptors contacted the Magic to see if Carter might be a willing participant (or target) for the tribute. George Galante, director of communications for the Magic, said he asked Carter if the Raptors could honor him, but Carter declined. 'Why would I want to do it? You heard it out there,' Carter said. 'They came to me. It just didn't make sense. Actually, it wasn't as loud as it has been. It used to be deafening.'"
In their never-ending quest to remind us what city they play in, the New Orleans Hornets unveiled special Mardi Gras uniforms on Wednesday. You know, third jersey alternates. Laissez les bons temps roulez!
The busy uniforms will be worn annually during the Mardi Gras and feature many designs inspired by the beautiful city of N'awlins and the Carnival tradition. They also smell like gin.
Designed by adidas — and based on the two-tone template used for the 2008 NBA All-Star Game held in New Orleans — some of the hometown accents include: the wild purple-green-gold scheme; the word-mark "NOLA" abbreviation across the front; funky ornamental side patterns based on NO's rich heritage of wrought iron architecture; and the Fleur-de-Bee and trumpet logos on the back.
