The Rockets knew it would be a struggle to get to this point, but they insist they expected more than 8-6.

Houston opened the season with a schedule rated the league's toughest to this point, playing on the road at the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah, Portland, Dallas and Atlanta. They just reached a needed three-day break in the schedule after playing eight games in 12 nights.

Adjusting to a lineup radically altered by injuries, and with a style nearly as transformed, they are two games above .500 but not satisfied, arguing that they had lost too many games they could have won, and a few they believed they should have won.

"I think we could do better," Trevor Ariza said.

Rockets' McGrady back at practice, return unclear (AP)

Tracy McGrady returned to practice with the Houston Rockets for the first time since microfracture surgery in February on Monday, but the seven-time All-Star still doesn't know when he'll play. McGrady said he can play now, but Rockets coach Rick Adelman has said he's not ready. Adelman missed practice Monday to attend to a personal matter and was not available for comment.

After leading by 15 points in the second quarter and holding a 59-52 halftime edge, the Rockets needed 22 points from Luis Scola and some defense down the stretch to beat the Sacramento Kings 113-106 on Saturday night.

Amare Stoudemire and the high-scoring Phoenix Suns turned to their defense to pick up another victory in Houston. Stoudemire scored 23 points, Steve Nash had 16 assists and the Suns recovered from a slow start to beat the Rockets 111-105 on Tuesday night. Jason Richardson scored 20 points for the Suns, who have won eight of their last 11 games in Houston.

The Toronto Raptors claimed British forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu off waivers from the Houston Rockets on Tuesday. Mensah-Bonsu played for the Raptors last season. He signed a free-agent deal with Houston on Sept. 3 and played a total of 12 minutes in four games before he was waived last Friday.
