Bobcats Team Report

Yahoo! Sports - 5 hours, 38 minutes ago

Bobcats coach Larry Brown took a gamble on using his bench Sunday, and he couldn't help but be impressed by the results.

Three starters are among the top 30 in the NBA in minutes per game: Gerald Wallace, (a league-high 42.5), Boris Diaw (37.8) and Stephen Jackson (35.9). That had to lighten up sometime or they'd burn out.

Sunday, Brown played four reserves 11 minutes or more apiece. The results were promising as the Bobcats defeated the Indiana Pacers to break a seven-game losing streak. The bench totaled 40 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

The most impressive reserve was rookie forward Derrick Brown, a second-round pick who finished with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. If that's any indication, Brown could get more playing time in the week's remaining home games, versus Toronto on Wednesday and Cleveland on Friday.

BOBCATS 104, PACERS 88: The Bobcats reached a season high in points one game after putting up just 59 field-goal attempts and committing three shot-clock violations versus the Milwaukee Bucks. They shot 50 percent, with center Nazr Mohammed making eight of 10 shots from the field.

  • To illustrate the difference between Sunday's game and Friday's game, consider this: The Bobcats took just 15 fewer shots in the first half versus the Pacers (44) than they did all game against the Bucks.

  • Even on a generally hot shooting night, the Bobcats are miserable from 3-point range. They were 1-of-10 from the arc Sunday and 10-of-48 in their last three games.

Quote To Note:

"It's my 12th year and I'm not going to be an All-Star. … Winning is the only thing that's going to satisfy me—to win and feel like I contributed."

—Center Nazr Mohammed on his success after spending most of last season on the bench.

Rotation:

Starters—G Raymond Felton, G Stephen Jackson, F Gerald Wallace, F Boris Diaw, C Nazr Mohammed. Bench—G Flip Murray, G D.J. Augustin, F Derrick Brown.

Player Notes:

  • G Raymond Felton continued to start despite coach Larry Brown's hint after Friday's game that he might consider starting Flip Murray instead.

  • C Tyson Chandler still figures to be the starter once he recovers from back spasms. And Nazr Mohammed won't have a problem with that—he doesn't believe he's up to 35-minute games as a starter at this juncture of his career.

  • F Derrick Brown, the Bobcats' second-round pick, is having a bigger impact than lottery pick Gerald Henderson. That's partially because Henderson plays behind Stephen Jackson at shooting guard, but it also reflects Brown's maturity and versatility. Brown can play either forward spot.

  • G D.J. Augustin looks scared to shoot. He hasn't taken more than six shots in any of the last nine games, and that's costing him minutes to Flip Murray.

Medical Watch:

  • C Tyson Chandler (lower back spasms) missed his second straight game.
