The word yesterday was that there was no way a contract extension would be reached between the Boston Celtics and Rajon Rondo(notes) before midnight on Halloween and the guy would become a restricted free agent next July. But now his agent, Bill Duffy, is singing a different tune and has told ESPN that negotiations are still underway and something could happen before the deadline.
Duffy and Danny Ainge, the Celtics director of basketball operations, apparently met up in Cleveland where the team made a counterproposal that got things going again for Duffy.
Rondo supposedly wants to be in the top five in terms of payment to point guards which would put him in the company of Chris Paul(notes) ($13.6 million), Deron Williams(notes) ($13.5 million), Steve Nash(notes) ($13.1 million), Chauncey Billups(notes) ($12.1 million), and Baron Davis(notes) ($12.1 million). Obviously, Boston doesn't want to shell out that kind of cash right now.

resign ray ray. get a cheap point guard like jamaal tinsley (obvious upgrade. better shooter, better passer), brevin knight, trade for one like rafer alston, or draft one. with the big 3 healthy, you can pretty much plug in any competent point guard and the team will still keep rolling. just look at the magic last year after jameer got injured.

stephen jackson, a vastly superior player to rondo (better shooter, scorer, defender, all around talent), gets paid 3 year 28 million, he is a greedy bum then rondo wants 13 million a year and the comments here are screaming pay the man.
i wouldn't pay him more than 8 million max. go ahead and sign someone like brevin knight, rafer alston, or jamaal tinsley. the record wouldn't even show.
rondo is not a difference maker.

Tinsley....better than rondo? you have lost your dang mind.
Rondo averages a double double almost every game and whats tinsley do? 12 points?
yeah thats much better.
I'm sorry but rondo deserves at least what hes asking for if not more. because even with the big three+rash still need someone who can dribble drive and pass the ball back out. pierce cant play point all game and ray ray needs to say on the perimeter. so all the rondo haters, dont be jealous because hes better than you and most of your teams point guards.

If Rondo was a better shooter than maybe he deserves more money.
Rumors were that Rondo's agent was asking for the house. He won't get that anywhere.
If you put Rondo on a bad team. They still will stink. He can't lead a bad team like Chris Paul because Rondo is a poor poor poor shooter
