NBA - Sports Rumors

“RajonThe word yesterday was that there was no way a contract extension would be reached between the Boston Celtics and Rajon Rondo(notes) before midnight on Halloween and the guy would become a restricted free agent next July. But now his agent, Bill Duffy, is singing a different tune and has told ESPN that negotiations are still underway and something could happen before the deadline.

Duffy and Danny Ainge, the Celtics director of basketball operations, apparently met up in Cleveland where the team made a counterproposal that got things going again for Duffy.

Rondo supposedly wants to be in the top five in terms of payment to point guards which would put him in the company of Chris Paul(notes) ($13.6 million), Deron Williams(notes) ($13.5 million), Steve Nash(notes) ($13.1 million), Chauncey Billups(notes) ($12.1 million), and Baron Davis(notes) ($12.1 million). Obviously, Boston doesn't want to shell out that kind of cash right now.

I say give Rondo his money, at his age with his talent will not be easy to replace.

i can't wait to see the c's get rid of this greedy, overrated bum.
resign ray ray. get a cheap point guard like jamaal tinsley (obvious upgrade. better shooter, better passer), brevin knight, trade for one like rafer alston, or draft one. with the big 3 healthy, you can pretty much plug in any competent point guard and the team will still keep rolling. just look at the magic last year after jameer got injured.

i can't help but notice the double standard here.
stephen jackson, a vastly superior player to rondo (better shooter, scorer, defender, all around talent), gets paid 3 year 28 million, he is a greedy bum then rondo wants 13 million a year and the comments here are screaming pay the man.
i wouldn't pay him more than 8 million max. go ahead and sign someone like brevin knight, rafer alston, or jamaal tinsley. the record wouldn't even show.
rondo is not a difference maker.

he doesn't deserve 13 million a year, but he's a triple double waiting to happen every night, he carried the team against the bulls in the first round of the playoffs last year. the big three aren't getting any younger. even if they dont sign him now, he's a restricted free agent and the celtics can match any offer. maybe if it gets that far you can work out a sign and trade, but you dont just let a young point guard who has gotten better every year go. he's a great rebounder for his size, he's also an above average defender. he can work on his jump shot that will come in time. to say this team will be just as good without him is a little over the top.

Let him play for the contract this season. He's a restricted free agent, so any offer made to him this offseason, the Celtics can match. His offensive liabilities would keep him out of being considered a top 5 PG in the league as of now, but that can change over the course of this season and in the seasons to come. The rest of his game is there, just needs to hit and look for his shot more often, and continue to grow as a floor general and team leader. He wants to be paid like a top 5 PG, let him show this season he is indeed a top 5 PG. It can only help the team to have him extra motivated. LET'S GO CELTICS!!!!!

Tinsley....better than rondo? you have lost your dang mind.
Rondo averages a double double almost every game and whats tinsley do? 12 points?
    yeah thats much better.
I'm sorry but rondo deserves at least what hes asking for if not more. because even with the big three+rash still need someone who can dribble drive and pass the ball back out. pierce cant play point all game and ray ray needs to say on the perimeter. so all the rondo haters, dont be jealous because hes better than you and most of your teams point guards.

he doesnt deserve top 5 pg money right now. he could down the road if he improves his shooting and more importantly his leadership. i would let him play out this season and then let him fend for himself next offseason. I would not give him top 5 pg money right now.

Rondo is not worth 13 million yet, but please dont try to compare that useless p.o.s. Jackson to Rondo. They shopped that loser around the leauge and not one team, even the worse ones, wanted that bum. What does that tell you. If Golden State could have found a sucker to take his contract, he would be long gone. He knows it, and so does every team in the NBA, thats why he came crawing back.

hold on, stephen jackson, vastly superior to rondo? what games are you watching. rondo has a better all around game than s-jax. the only thing that jackson beats him on is shooting and the reality is that he's basically a career 40% shooter, hardly knock down. rondo is a better decision maker than jackson, a better rebounder (and smaller) and a better defender. they are about even in the maturity and leadership department even though rondo is much younger. jackson's stats last season were inflated by the fact that he played point guard, averagely. the most significant thing about that is wins. he's supposed to be the best player on the team but did that leadership translate to wins, nope. his basic pg style of play was to bring the ball up, dribble it around a bit and then throw up a 3. that only works on a don nelson team. on a good team jackson might come off the bench while rondo with his x-factor play and all around game could be starting. i can only assume that you havent seen jackson play very much to make that statement.

    ten million per year.
If Rondo was a better shooter than maybe he deserves more money.
Rumors were that Rondo's agent was asking for the house. He won't get that anywhere.
If you put Rondo on a bad team. They still will stink. He can't lead a bad team like Chris Paul because Rondo is a poor poor poor shooter
