“RajonThe Boston Celtics and Rajon Rondo(notes) have apparently agreed on a contract extension that will have him with the team for five more years at the price of $55 million, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears.

Today is the deadline to sign such deals. Rondo's agent, Bill Duffy, apparently called Celtics president Danny Ainge to let him know that Rondo was happy to just become a restricted free agent next summer and not sign an extension since he and Rondo weren't thrilled with the offers that had come in from Boston. Ainge apparently told him right that they would give Rondo the cash he wanted, which is a different song than the team was singing this summer when Rondo's name was supposedly in trade talks and the team publicly worried about his "maturity."

"As much as we were willing to wait his contract out, the Celtics stepped up to the plate to meet the original request," Duffy said. "This is a really fair contract. We wanted him to be paid like one of the top five point guards around."

As long as he keeps maturing and improving/expanding his game, then its fine. Can't give too many players big contracts though, limits your flexibility later on.

I always wonder why these rumors that has already been announced and confirmed in yahoo sports nba news are placed here in sports rumors. Aren't rumors suppose to be unconfirmed or something people are still uncertain of or they should at least be posted here in rumors before being posted in yahoo news. I might be wrong here, just wondering.

gotta say yeah there is room for improvement. i do understand that the core is aging and most of his game is based on them but he is one of the best defensive pgs in the league with a ring. gonna make the off season hard to resign key players though like LA's problem when they did bynum last year. guys like house, allen, scalibrine, dainels, pierce all will be free agents next year with a declining cap. Possible luxury tax problem unless they will to take a play cut

he's definitely overpaid especially in the current economy, but role players on good teams and young guys with a bit of upside are always overpaid.
i don't see him being worth more than 8 million per year.

Tyson... Rondo is one of the top PG's in the league... he's one of the reasons the Celtics are the best team in the league... there aren't that many PG's you can rate ahead of him... Parker, Paul, Nash, Williams, Kidd, Billups, are all really great, but Rondo is right there... he's fast, defensiveminded, and stays healthy... and he's won a ring, which is more than Paul, Nash, Williams, and Kidd can say...

rondo was only good cuz he plays with 3 future hall of famers.
if you get rid of him and plug brevin knight or jamaal tinsley in there, you would get the same result.

Tyson...I agree......Rondo is a notch below Billups, Paul, Parker, Nash etc. But like most teams do with young players (like the Lakers with Bynum) they're locking them up for the future, thinking they will improve. Most of the time it doesn't happen.

So Tyson... retarded JACKASS... i guess since Rondo was averaging damn near a triple double in the playoffs... it was because of the big 3... they gave him all those rebounds... all those points... I'm SURE you know more about the NBA and the talent level of the players than people like Danny Ainge and people who are truly in the know... Rondo was a really good player for the Celtics in his rookie year when all they had was Paul Pierce, and had several games of double doubles... admit it, ROOKIE... you're a jealous RETARD...

you really think that the Lakers would rather have Fisher than Rondo? how about Cleveland? Miami? NY? Philly? Rondo is the leading PG who would be a free agent next year, and who in the hell would take his place? Marbury? House? a rookie? Rondo and Perkins are the cornestones of the next generation of Celtics after KG, Pierce, and Allen go on down the road, and there will be a TON of cap space when that does happen, ensuring that the Celtics have an awesome chance of being a dominant team for a long time...

smrd, your trying to reason with people who aren't capable of reasoning. Just laugh at the morons. I LOVE the argument that Rondo is only 'good' because he plays with who he plays with. It's a stupid argument. I would guess then, by that reasoning Magic Johnson was only 'good' because he played with Jabbar, Worthy, Scott, Cooper, etc....? See if you use their reasoning against them, they will have no answer for it! Unless your brain dead, or have absolutley no objectivity at all, if you watch the Celtics you will come to the same conclusion that Doc put into words last year " Rondo is the heart and soul of the team, we go as he goes". The hopeless don't understand ( not capapble of rational thought) that if you put R R on any other team HE would be the star of that team. And he's only getting better. Most of these wazzoos are just statistic readers....they have no idea what actually goes on in a game other than numbers.

The Celtics are gambling big, hoping Rondo to develop into an star. The only reason he averages good amount of rebound and assist compared to other point guard is because of the defense of the team the causes opposing team to miss shots and more rebounding opportunity and another is that he doesn't really need to take shots because of so many players more capable of scoring then him so he gives the ball to other players for the assist. In fact high rebounding point guard waste the teams opportunity to push the floor for easier shots because instead of running he goes back to get the rebound. Another thing is that he won't be able to carry a team with just passing the ball,he need to score and the only reason he able to score in double figures because opposing teams play off him to double team the big three.

Kenneth C... if it's such a "gamble" why don't the Celtics go ahead and gamble that they can get a player that lives up to your worthless expectations? If the only thing you can knock on him is that he isn't a great shooter... then how in the FUK do you explain OTHER "poor shooters" like Jason Kidd making it in the NBA?

smrd thanks. But again look at the reasoning your up against. First of all kenneth is probably not even close to aware of what Rondo's shooting percentage is ( one of only 5 guards in the leauge who were over 50% last season). But yet according to the masses he 'can't shoot'. Hmn? Not to mention the fact that it could very well BE HARDER to run a team like the 'Big Three', just for the fact that there are 3 guys that need to have the ball and be a scoring threat all at once. Wouldn't it be easier to run a team with 4 nobodys on the floor? And the rebounding argument is unbelievable! How do you 'push the floor' without the ball? Gimme a player that gets 8 rebounds a game, ESPECIALLY from the point, anyday. IT"S EXTRA POSSESIONS! Possessions are crucial to scoring and controlling the tempo of the game, DUH! Would these people rather he NOT rebound, and thus take the chance that those 8 possesions a game went to the opponent? DUH AGAIN! And I am getting tired of making people who don't know what they are seeing TRY TO LEARN here, but it's a TEAM GAME. No one player needs to do the scoring, unless the situation calls for it. IE, if they double off him. When you have so many guys on the floor that are capable of it and do score, why is it nessesary for one guy to 'have to score'. Look at the way the Celtics play and it will become obvious that no one player, except in times of 'team drought' and every team has those 4 or 5 minute stretches when the shots aren't falling, has to do all the scoring. On a well rounded team, the TEAM plays as a team and no one player has to do everything. I've seen quite a few games where R R put it on himself to score, when he had a mismatch, when PP or RA shots weren't going down, whatever. He recognises those times and takes it on himself. That is a player folks. AGain, if he was on anyother team, he would be the star. And when the big three start to fade away eventually, this guy will be the focus of the Celtics for years to come.

yeah i haven't noticed Rondo SLOWING the Celtics down by getting rebounds, or hurting them with the inablility to knock down the 3... he plays to his strengths, which is rebounding, pushing the tempo, good defense, penetrating and kicking out or making a close shot.... as long as you know your strengths and weaknesses you can succeed... while he'll never be the "go to player" on the floor, that's ok!! Yeah Voice of Reason, Rondo is a CAREER 48% shooter (better than the "great" Kobe Bryant"), yet can't get the ball in the hole... give me a break... learn the game of basketball, rookies, then come back!!

lmfao @ all the ppl sucking rondo's balls.
    rondo stinks. PERIOD.
smrd thinks rondo and perkins should be the future cornerstone of the celts rofl. if they are, then the celts will be the worst team in the league.
the guy doesn't have any midrange or 3 point shots. shooting percentage don't mean crap cuz all his shots are layups and wide open shots when kg is getting doubled.
and can y'all stop pointing out that stupid playoff series with the bulls as the justification for this ridiculous contract? derrick rose (another young overrated, overhyped loser) can't defend anyone to save his life. that's why rondo's stats was so ridiculous. in fact, the entire series was the epitome of horrible defense.
i'm a celts fan and if i wanna shell out that much money, i woulda given it to a better player such as david lee or allen iverson instead of this scrub. hell, jamaal tinsley is an upgrade.
