Bosh, Calderon lead way as Raptors beat Pacers

Preview | Box Score | Recap

TORONTO (AP)—The Raptors didn’t need a big game from Chris Bosh(notes) to beat the struggling Pacers. Another lackluster effort by Indiana made it easy work.

Chris Bosh had 16 points and 12 rebounds, Jose Calderon(notes) scored a season-high 21 points and Toronto handed the Pacers their fourth straight loss, 123-112 on Tuesday night.

“This was an unacceptable performance for us,” Indiana center Troy Murphy(notes) said. “We have aspirations of making the playoffs and this is definitely not getting us going in the right direction. We have to come out and play a lot better.”

Still angry at his team’s showing in Sunday’s double-digit loss at Charlotte, Pacers coach Jim O’Brien was even more livid after the Pacers allowed 74 first-half points in this one.

“I’m very disappointed,” O’Brien said. “I thought we were horrible at Charlotte and I think the first half here was just like Charlotte. We just did not play with any defensive force and, as a result, we got pounded.”

Bosh made only five of 19 shots but still got his 12th double-double in 15 games.

“I don’t consider this a bad game,” Bosh said. “If we had lost it would have been a bad game.”

With the rest of the team combining to shoot 66 percent (38 for 58), Bosh’s line was an afterthought.

“Everybody else was scoring so it doesn’t matter,” Calderon said. “We’re as happy as if he got 30 points.”

Jarrett Jack(notes) scored 18 against his former team and Andrea Bargnani(notes) and Hedo Turkoglu(notes) each had 14 for the Raptors, who won for just the second time in six games.

Jack has reached double figures twice in his past three games after failing to do so in any of his first 12 after joining Toronto this summer.

“He’s different right now,” Raptors coach Jay Triano said. “He’s lighter off the floor. He’s just playing with a lot of confidence.”

Indiana’s Danny Granger(notes) recovered from a poor first half to finish with a season-high 36, including seven 3-pointers, and nine rebounds. Former Raptor T.J. Ford(notes) scored 16.

“I really don’t know what to tell you,” Granger said. “We emphasize what we want to do and sometimes we do it and sometimes we don’t. We didn’t do it tonight.”

Murphy and Brandon Rush(notes) each scored 11 for the Pacers, who have allowed four straight opponents to top 100 points. Indiana hosts the Clippers on Wednesday night, leaving little time to sort things out.

“We have to stop it, regardless of what it is,” Murphy said. “We have to figure it out quick.”

Toronto led by 21 at the half but saw the Pacers cut the gap to eight, 100-92 to begin the fourth. Murphy made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, the second making it 113-106 with 6:52 left, but Bosh made one free throw and, after Toronto grabbed the rebound on the missed second, Jack drained a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 11, 117-106.

Calderon and Turkoglu combined to shoot 6 for 7 in the first as Toronto led 39-31 after one, it’s highest-scoring opening quarter of the season.

Toronto kept it up in the second, shooting 13 for 18 and setting a season high for points in a half to lead 74-53 lead at the break.

After shooting 3 for 12 in the first half, Granger began the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers. With Toronto suddenly misfiring, missing six of their first eight shots, Granger heated up, shooting 5 of 8 for 13 points in the quarter as the Pacers fought back.

“You can’t play one good quarter on the road and expect to win,” O’Brien said.

Calderon stepped awkwardly on a layup attempt and injured his right ankle late in the third. He spent the rest of the quarter on the bench before returning midway through the fourth, and said afterward that he expects to be healthy in time for Wednesday’s game at Charlotte.

Toronto’s Marco Belinelli(notes) (left groin) and Antoine Wright(notes) (left ankle) returned after sitting out Sunday’s home loss to Orlando. Wright had missed four of the past five games.

Indiana’s Jeff Foster(notes) made his first start, replacing Roy Hibbert(notes), because O’Brien preferred Foster’s defensive quickness when guarding Bosh and Bargnani. It’s the first time this season that Hibbert has not started.

NOTES: O’Brien said swingman Mike Dunleavy (right knee surgery) could be ready to return “within days.” After the Clippers, Indiana hosts Dallas on Friday. … Toronto’s first half was its biggest since scoring 75 in a Dec. 21, 1999, home win over New Jersey. … The Raptors plays five of their next seven on the road. … A large group of fans from Toronto’s Turkish community waved flags and cheered loudly for Turkoglu. … Toronto is 5-2 at home.

I am so glad the Pacers decided to put an emphasis on defense. 74 points in the first half! Are you kidding me? Why is O'Brien starting Foster? Hibbert is finally coming into his own, and now you bench him for an aging rebounder who can't score, and was never very good on defense. It might be time for O'Brien to go. He has no feel for this team, and has little if any idea how to fix it. I agree that Ford is not the answer at the point. I mentioned a 3 team trade with my friends to see if they thought it was a good idea. The trade would be Ford to Orlando, Redick to Chicago, and Hinrick to Indiana. I think the Pacers would be better served slowly up the offense, and running a half court set. You need to play a style for the personnel you have. Especially with players like Dunleavy and Murphy. It will minimize possessions, help slow tempo, and the defense should have a chance to get set. Run and chuck doesn't make sense to me. As far as Chicago trade wise. They have a point guard in Hinrick trying to play the 2 guard and Orlando needs a starting point with Nelson down. Redick is a pure shooter and would fit nicely in Chicago, instead of backing up at point and getting lost in the shuffle in Orlando. Sorry I was so long winded... Any thoughts on the trade proposal?

How did Bird not ditch Ford (he sucks by the way) and sign Jack to run point, Bird is ruining The Pacers, O'Brien is one of the worst coaches in the NBA, see starting line-up with Jeff Foster and Troy Murphy in it as an example. PACERS SUCK, I feel so bad for Granger.

U R WRONG! Kobiotch has NOT given up his numbers for the team. He has played and shot, and shot, and shot in the 4th Quarters of games the Lakers have led by 24 & 23 after 3 quarters. Just to get his points. That is SELFISH & Unnescessary.

Bosh Fans. Relax. Don't think Colangelo won't trade this guy. Raptors played a weak Pacers team. When it comes down to the wire in big games Bosh is not clutch. Who cares what kind of numbers he puts up. He should be in the WNBA. I can remember one stretch in the 4th he put up back to back bricks. Started the game 0-3 relying all on @#$% mid range jumpers. I'm no expert on the game, but anyone can see this guy should not be taking those kind of shots. Basketball is a team game. Even Kobe has given up his numbers to get his whole team in the game. I'm sure if you look over stats you will suprisngly see that when Bosh puts up big numbers...Raptors lose. The only idiots are people that actually think Bosh is a leader.

I will agree with, the team has a lot of new guys and need time to gel. There is no excuse for squandering huge leads. Even with the tough schedule. Raptors have thrown away games. Has Bosh done anything to give them the edge?

Bosh is not the guy that can gel this team together. He has to be shipped. Toronto fans, and media alike have given Bosh way too much credit. Being an elite player, Franchise player, Go-to-guy. It has all gotten to his head.

Calderon making 8 mill a year...that is another story.

This was an amazing game by the Raps, 100 minutes and 50 points from the bench on the front side of a back-to-back. Great floor management by Triano, I know Pacers got a little close for comfort, but nobody will ever beat us scoring like we did. Things are only gonna get better for these kids. Love it! Does not matter, pretty or ugly, it is a win. If we do not celebrate when we win, it will be a miserable year. However, it was on a good shooting night (or a bad one even by Bosh standards). What Triano needs to figure out is what if Raptors only shot .400 instead of .558. There will be plenty of those nights when you go on the road for the next 5-6 games. Then what do you have to do to scratch out a win.

I would try this combination - Jack, Bellini, Johnson, Bargnani, Bosh. Any one else agrees?

123 pts in regulation is nice and all, but to give away 112 just plainly says basement playoff team.

    Still, go raps.

Bosh and Calderon both stink. Trade them. Turk and Barg are being overshadowed by Bosh glory hog mentality as long as I get my high Doubles I'm happy. Franchise my ass! Down the stretch trying to beat double teams with that Rupaul body. Throwing up rushed shots, and running into dead ends because he is weak. Calderon overrated! He has one pass inside to Bosh. No wonder Raptors stink. Give the Ball to Turk to lead this team. He lead the Magic last year, not that clown Howard who thinks he is superman.

Raptors should pull themself together or else this could just be a mirror of last season wherein somebody got fired going into the Christmas break. Triano has to push his boys to give it their all every game. Until now the Raptor head coach has yet to find the right rotation for his lineup specially his starters. Jose Calderon maybe be good but not good enough up to this point to lead his team to success. Everyone is pinning their hope for him to succeed so he has to show a lot of toughness & most specially his aggressiveness inside the court. There are no more Jermaine O'Neil to block shots for him nor Shawn Marion to chase loose ball for him. His fellow starters Bargnani & Turkuglu have totally different skills. So far Chris Bosh has been doing the dirty work for them scoring, rebounding & blocking shots. Toronto can be a very tough team if they can limit their opponents below 100 points a game.
