Kobe scores 34 in Lakers’ 100-90 win over Knicks

Preview | Box Score | Recap

LOS ANGELES (AP)—When Lakers 7-footers Pau Gasol(notes) and Andrew Bynum(notes) lined up for the opening tip against New York’s comparatively pint-sized front line, anybody who has ever seen a pickup game between poorly chosen teams could have predicted what happened next.

Los Angeles just had way too much size and strength for the Knicks—and if the Lakers can just hone their finishing skills, they’ll be close to the complete team coach Phil Jackson expects.

Kobe Bryant(notes) scored 34 points, Gasol added 11 points and 16 rebounds, and the Lakers exploited a major size advantage in their fourth straight victory, 100-90 over the late-arriving Knicks on Tuesday night.

Bynum added 17 points and eight rebounds on an injured right ankle, although he barely needed to jump while helping Los Angeles to a 60-36 rebounding advantage. When the Knicks struggled from outside, they had little chance to climb over the defending NBA champions.

“We like to use our height to our advantage,” Bynum said. “It doesn’t do any good if you don’t have the right game plan and the right fundamentals, but we had that for the most part, too.”

Ron Artest(notes) scored 17 points for the Lakers, who took control of their eighth win in 10 meetings with New York by scoring 17 consecutive points in the third quarter while holding the Knicks scoreless for nearly 7 1/2 minutes. Even 6-10 Lamar Odom(notes) grabbed 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, though Jackson didn’t like his performance with the Lakers’ reserves in the fourth quarter.

“It was one of those games that got plodding in the last 6-8 minutes, so it doesn’t leave you with a good feeling when you walk out of here,” Jackson said.

The Lakers led by 24 in the third quarter before New York’s late rally against their reserves trimmed another potential blowout to respectability. Los Angeles also committed 25 turnovers, but the Lakers still haven’t really been challenged in three games since Gasol’s return from injury.

“It wasn’t as good as we would have wanted, but we got a nice win,” Gasol said. “We have to do a better job and put in the effort. The intensity level just winds down, and we’ve got to continue to play hard for 48 minutes.”

The entire evening got off to a poor start for the Knicks, whose team bus carrying coach Mike D’Antoni and some players didn’t arrive at Staples Center until less than an hour before game time, slowed by Westside traffic from the team’s hotel in Santa Monica.

Nate Robinson(notes) and Wilson Chandler(notes) scored 15 points apiece for the Knicks, who opened a three-game West Coast swing with their fifth straight loss to the Lakers. Eddy Curry(notes), the Knicks’ own 7-footer, tweaked his knee and didn’t play in the second half.

“We were trying to be tough and aggressive on the defensive end and make it tough for them early in the game, but they used their length and were able to get a lot of looks right in front of the basket,” said Larry Hughes(notes), who had six points on 3-of-9 shooting. “We took a lot of contested jump shots and didn’t score, and it puts pressure on us when we’re not getting stops.”

Chandler’s 5-for-20 shooting performance didn’t help, but size was the most obvious offensive problem for the Knicks. Basically unable to get into the paint, the Knicks earned just 12 free throws but also struggled from outside, going 11 for 33 on 3-point attempts.

“We needed to shoot the ball extremely well tonight to have a chance to win, because their defense is predicated on making teams shoot contested jump shots rather getting into the lane,” 6-foot-9 center David Lee(notes) said. “And when you do get into the lane, they have two 7-footers in there. That’s why we needed to shoot well from the 3-point line. We put up 33 of them, and we didn’t hit as many as we should have.”

Bryant set a Madison Square Garden record with 61 points in the teams’ last meeting, but the Lakers needed much less help to beat New York on the other coast for their 10th win in 12 games.

Los Angeles finished the first half on a 15-4 run to take a 10-point lead. The Lakers then turned a 59-52 advantage into a 24-point margin with a relentless series of baskets and defense, with Bryant leading the way on both ends.

Bryant then hit a fallaway 3-pointer and a tough jumper in the final seconds of the quarter, although Robinson made a double-clutch 3-pointer from near midcourt at the buzzer to cut Los Angeles’ lead to 21. Robinson had four 3-pointers altogether.

NOTES: D’Antoni said Curry’s injury “will probably just be a day-to-day thing.” … Bryant returns to the Garden on Jan. 22. He made 20 free throws without a miss in his 61-point game last February. … Stevie Wonder, comedians George Lopez and Richard Lewis, and actor Jason Patric attended the game.

once again I'll start by saying kiss me gold and purple arse all u Laker haters! Dontcha know its better to keep your mouths shut and have people think your an idiot than to open your mouths and prove to everyone u are idiots? No other coach would have accomplished what Jackson has PERIOD all this garbage about anyone could have coached Jordan, Kobe,Shaq would have won championships is ridiculous. Cleveland and Orlando were most likely better teams last year and according to all u experts queen james was MVP and Howard was superman lmao Plenty of coaches would have never trusted putting the ball in Fishers hand for the game tying shot after the way he wasn't close to the sinking a 3 in game 4 of the finals. If Malone and Stockton had been coached by Jackson they would have some rings as well as the Sacramento queens or your beloved Cavaqueers. See u in the funny papers. Losers!

Kobe is the greatest of all time!!!! Well... Kareem, Wilt, Michael, Magic, Larry Legend and even The Big O Oscar Robertson might have something to say about that. I'll grant you that when it is all said and done, Kobe will go down as one of the greatest, but not as the greatest of all time. Shaq got Kobe those three rings. He got to play with Shaq when Shaq was a full time dominating center in the NBA. Put someone like LeBron in Kobe's place and LeBron would have won three rings too. Hell put any star in there with Shaq and they would have one three rings. Shaq got Wade his one and only ring too. Oscar Robertson AVERAGED a triple double one season. All of the aforementioned players won alot of rings between them. Prople like to compare LeBron and Kobe. Well Its hard to do right now because Kobe is 32 and heading toward the downside of his career and LeBron has not even reached his prime ( SCARY THOUGHT). It took 5 years for Kobe to average 25 pts a game. LeBron averaged 27 pts a game at age 19.(SCARY THOUGHT) .Kobe has an extra seven years of playing time on LeBron so the best thing to do is wait until LeBron is 32 and swee what he has done.

D,Antoni needs to benched. We benched players I think it is time we start benching coaches. When a coach is not doing a job he should be benched and then if he cannot improve he needs to be let go.
Anyone who have any common sense will see that we cannot win with the line up we have. The starting five for knicks is horrendous thee bench has the better players especially the guards. We need to start Curry at Center and David LEE AT POWER FOWARD. Galinieri should be smallforward and Chandler should play shooting Guard
Douglas should be the point guard. Both hughes and the other point guard should be playing behind Nate ROBINSON, HARRISON AND HILL SHOULD BE THE FIRST SET OFF THE BENCH.
The BACK up Center should be the shot blocker the 7ft player.
Knicks are not utilising there players well. We have players to play big teams ... Guess what the coach is incompetent HE DOES NOT COMPREHEND HE NEEDS TO PLAY THE BIG PLAYERS . Knicks have two rookies that can be all starS and the coach is hardly playing them. Knicks have big 7 foot players and big players like Curry who is not being played.. Knicks need to bench the coach... It is time coaches be bench when they are incompetent.Knicks has an incompetent coach, Bench the damn coach.

tunit... That comment was aimed towards the idiots that always say that LA never beats good teams, if you wasn't one of those idiots, then don't respond. It's damn hard not to beat good teams when you win 65 games in the regular season and then the World Championship to boot. Yeah, they really suck!! A loss to Denver in the first 10 games of the season is just as important as getting swept by Orlando last year in the regular season... not very.

    1. Unguardable
    2.Clutch in the 4th quarter
3.He's better than Lebron, hands down.

Watching the Lakers 4th quarter left me with a few thoughts:
Why was Sasha Vujacic bringing the ball down the court instead of Shannon Brown?
Does Adam Morrison have any post up moves at all or is he just an outside shooter?
How could Lamar & Sasha commit so many turnovers and throw up so many out of control jumpers so early in the shot clock?
Where was the perimeter defense? How could the Laker bench let NY shoot so many 3's?

Now I know why Luke Walton is so important to this second unit. He controlls the ball, rebounds, makes good, crisp passes and gets open for easy layups. Luke! Hurry up and heal- Morrison is a slow, plodding, pathetic excuse for a lottery pick.

On the whole, it was a win, but the Laker bench can't play like that if they want to repeat.

COACH are you serious? Did you watch the game or were you cheeering the Entire game? Lakers and Knicks were back and forth in the 1st half. Im pretty sure true fans of the Game noticed. In the 1st half The refs whistle blowing dictated the pace of the game 7x whistles were blown against knicks some for idiotic fouls and a few for no reason. Case and point when Lakers would turn the ball over and knicks were on a fast break attempt an offensive foul would be call against the knicks keeping the half court pace momentum in favor of the lakers. Bynum WAS fouled on the wrist on one play, Knicks took the ball ran for a fast break attempt suddenly a late technical call was given to Bynum for complaining. Even the commentator "Stu lance" admitted it shoulve been called after the Knicks fast break Knicks lack an interior game and basic perimeter defense. Numerous occasion they couldv'e drove it to the paint to create contact, In the begining they tried and recieved contact but no whistles were blown..David lee had been hammered twice no whistle.. Lakers would capitialize with either a fisher pull up or a team jump shot., As well a halfcourt tempo with Kobe creating his own shot and if hes doubled or tripled facilitating to an open player on the perimeter or slashing the paint.. Knicks took the lead by free throws.and then allowed the lakers to go on a 7-0 run by halftime. 3rd qtr Lakers STARTERS mauled the Knicks idiocy on settling for jump shots, lack of defense, and rebounds. LAKERS bench came in the game ONE WORD they are "TERRIBLE".. Knicks were finnaly driving the paint cutting the blowoff lead in half Phil is forced to place his starters back in too close the game.

Pros- Lakers starters "Kobe and Gasol " Height advantage,Big Bodies, half court tempo, Interior Team defense Great ball movement and Offensive production..Refs help.. Really Kobe hes a great player

Cons- Guarding pick and roll of screens, Zone Defense, Pressure defense, up-tempo, Kobe extended minutes, No Bench production.Complaining. Kobes out of the Game rest of the Team lacks assingment..

BIGKATT.. Huston and Phx really the only team on your little list that matter!! ATL is in the East and the other team are not making the playoffs.. beating PHX and huston are good wins but its the losses to Denver by 20+ and Dallas at home by 10+ that worrie me!!! i would rather loss to team like OKL and other sub.500 teams then getting beat down from Denver!! Laker wont see bad teams in the playoffs.. lossing by 20+ in Denver hurts more because Denver is a good team and can take out the lakers come playoff time!! Dallas is the same way!! i dont expect the lakers to win every big game but at least show up?!?!? it is real early in the season and they got Gasol back which should make a diffrence. Phil is a great coach and should have the lakers ready come playoff time..

To post 195 and all you anti-Lakers fans: You guys worrry way too much about our team. I'm not worried at all. Post 195 (Phoenix fan) said beating the Knicks by only 10 should set off an alarm. WTF are you talking about? You may know your team but you obviously know nothing about the Lakers, the triangle offense and most importantly, the way Phil Jackson coaches. I suggest you watch the Lakers very , very closely.

All the Lakers are doing is playing games and getting better as a team so they can be healthy and hit their stride come playoff time. Phil hates the regular season and that's why Phil says the Lakers won't beat the 72 win record of the Bulls because that's not the ultimate goal. Ever notice Phil doesn't look worried most of the time? His goal is to get everyone playing well late in the season. The early season is important, but it's not life or death for the Lakers because they KNOW they will be in the playoffs. Wait till the Lakers start playing good basketball (around February). So, thanks for worrying about our Lakers but really, there is no need; it's all going to play out just fine. LAKERS BACK TO BACK CHAMPS.

Let's see. LA hasn't beat anyone yet.

    Atlanta - Best in East
OKC Thunder (twice) - Winning Record
Houston - Everyone says they are great - Winning Record
Phoenix - on the Suns court (11-3)

I guess you can't play the best every game. We'll see what happens when LA plays Denver next time, when they are coming off a night game at Phoenix...

Tunit, Gasol is going to change a lot of things. Can you just add an all-star 7 footer to any roster? You tell me what happens when you add 20 points and 10 rebounds to any playoff roster. All those cheap wins the Lakers got by 1 and 2 points early are now blow outs. Gasol makes all of the difference, maybe even more than a Kobe because he does more for this team. Gasol is definitely the glue of this team. He may not have helped in the Denver game but he probably would have meant a great deal in the Houston and Dallas losses. Lets just put it like this, Bynum is a scrub compared to Gasol. The Lakers are just TOO big in the front court for ANY team to deal with.
