Magic win 4th straight, beating Boston 83-78

Preview | Box Score | Recap

BOSTON (AP)—Kevin Garnett(notes) missed last season’s playoff series against Orlando with a knee injury. Rasheed Wallace(notes) signed with Boston after it was over.

But the Magic made a key offseason pickup of their own.

Vince Carter(notes) scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, including a tiebreaking fadeaway jumper with 2:33 left to give Orlando an 83-78 victory over Boston on Friday night.

Carter, who came to Orlando in the offseason as part of a five-player trade, took 29 shots, a season high and his most in almost three years.

“I’m just glad I was able to deliver,” he said. “This type of basketball game, you don’t want to let down. This is what it’s all about. This is the bar. It’s great to see we were able to buckle down and persevere.”

Rashard Lewis(notes) had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Dwight Howard(notes) grabbed 15 boards and Mickael Pietrus(notes) added 14 points for Orlando, which won the rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference semifinal for its fourth consecutive victory.

“This is a big game for us, a confidence booster,” Lewis said. “We rode Vince a lot tonight.”

Paul Pierce(notes) scored 21 points, Garnett scored 13 with 11 rebounds and Ray Allen(notes) had 15 points for the Celtics, who have lost three of their last four games and three of five at home. Wallace had 13 rebounds, but he was 0 for 8 from 3-point range and Boston was 2 of 19 from beyond the arc as a team to contribute to a 34.5 percent overall shooting percentage.

“I think that our team is playing awful,” coach Doc Rivers said. “I’ve been saying it for a week now. We’re going to win some games still, but we’re not going to win against good teams.”

The game was the first meeting between the teams since the playoffs, when Orlando rallied from a 3-2 deficit to advance and, after beating LeBron James(notes) and the Cleveland Cavaliers, reach the NBA finals. It was the first time in franchise history that the Celtics lost a series after going into Game 6 with a chance to clinch.

The teams seemed destined to meet up again next postseason: They had matching 9-3 records entering Friday night’s game that were tied for the second-best in the conference to Atlanta. Now the Magic, who already held bragging rights thanks to last year’s playoff win, took the early lead in the race for this year’s seeding.

“We’re not a team that takes losing well,” Garnett said. “We’re still trying to figure it out.”

Kendrick Perkins(notes) picked up his fifth foul—and a technical to go with it— with 7:25 left in third and played only 15 minutes in all. Wallace took most of his minutes, hitting from under the basket with 2:53 left to tie the game 78-all.

Carter made a 12-footer to break the tie with 2:33 to play and give the Magic the lead for good. Lewis made a pair of free throws with 59 seconds left, then Jason Williams(notes) stole the ball from Allen to clinch the victory.

The Magic scored 12 straight points after trailing 6-5, the Pietrus made a 3-pointer and a 19-footer at the end of the first quarter to make it a 16-point game. But Boston scored seven in a row to start the second, then went on a 12-3 run just before the half to make it a 41-40 deficit.

Orlando led by 10 in the third, and 66-59 heading into the fourth before Boston cut it to one point when Wallace had a steal, leading to Pierce’s fast-break layup that made it 75-74 with 5:16 to play.

NOTES: The Celtics shot 33 percent in the first half. … Carter passed Rick Barry and moved into 53rd on the career scoring list with a driving jumper with 9:34 left in the first half that made it 31-20.

Good win for the magic in November against the Celts and good win for the magic last night against the Celts.Go Magic go.Nuggets Magic NBA finals 2010 either team can win the championship and it is fine with me because I love both teams.Nuggets Magic finals would be perferct matchup because neither team has won an nba championship. This type of nba finals would draw in a lot of viewers because during the regular nba season a lot of magic games are televised on nationwide tv and a lot of nuggets games are televised nationwide on tv.

The Fakers with Kobe Bryant the rapist will not repeat as champions just like the Celts did not repeat in 2009.The Fakers will loose to the Celts in Boston on Sunday and the Celts will beat the Hawks tonight.Celtics will always be number 1 in the nba with number of championships won and the Rapers/Fakers will always be number 2 in the nba.Faker fans have no class and destroy things when they win championships.Boston had better class in bean town in 2008 when they won 17th nba championship.

the team to beat this year in the east cleveland, orlando, atlantic , in other confrence laker phonix, denver dallas san antonio, boston don't have a chance with any of these team , boston is playing lousy ball noe all they thinking about now is shooting easy three points , 80 percent of the time they miss! 3 POINTS ARE NOT SO GARUTEE SHOTS, THEY ARE LOW PERCENTAGE SHOTS , NOT LIKE TO 2 POINTS SHOT OR PAINT POINTS ARE HIGH PERCENT POINTS , to TO MANY BOSTON PLAYERS ARE TRYING TO SHOOT 3 POINTS SHOTS ,THAT WHY BOSTON LOST 3 OUT OF 4 GAMES ,WE REALLY NEED WALLACE TO TRY FOR SOME 2 POINTS SHOT PLUS KEEP SHOOTING SOME 3 POINTS SHOT, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME, HE NEED TO TRY TO GO TO THE PAINT SOME TIME ALSO TO GET SOME POINTS , LOUSY DEFENCE,OUT REBOUND ,SLOW STARTS, AND MOST OF ALL SHOOTING TO MANY LOW PERCENTAGE 3 POINT SHOT AND MISSING ( 1 FOR 15 AND 2 FOR 19 ) AND NOT GOING TO THE PAINT OR 2 POIINT SHOT ENOUGH , THAT WHY BOSTON IS LOSING 3 OUT OF FOR 4 GAMES, DEFENCE HAVE TO BE NUMBER ONE! POINT WIL FOLLOW , STOP RELIEING AND TRYING TO SHOOT EASY 3 POINTS SHOT, GO AND GET THE DIRTY POINT FROM THE PAINT AND SHOOT MORE TWOS PONT SHOT , THAT WHAT BOSTON NEED TO GET BACK GO BACK TO FUNDEMENTAL DEFENCE AND 2 POINTERS!STIL SHOT 3 POINTS BUT DON'T SHOOT TO MANY DON'T RELIE ON 3 POINTS TO WIN GAMES

the game was simply a proof... A. Magic will still ripp of the celts... B. Carter is still good, motivated and definitely not a wrong move for the magic... and C. Magic are a powerhouse... oh... include D. Jameer may be traded for more productive PGs...

The magic came into boston and punched the celtics in the mouth, then stole their lunch money. The celtics already lost $200,000 worth of lunch money to the magic last year. The magic just keep bullying the retards in green! LMAO

RENE, are you still smarting about the spanking the hen nuggets got from the champs on the playoffs? That's what you should call destroying a team, more like a shredding, but then again chicken nuggets are supposed to be soft and Denver always is soft...on every sport..

So many Magic haters here...Don't you think that Boston shot bad because of the Magic's defense?? Um, probably so...last night's game was the worst shooting performance in the Garnett/Pierce/Allen era...that's no coincidence. The Magic locked down on defense and just beat them....period. After the first quarter, the Magic shot bad too, had a lot of turnovers, missed free throws, and STILL won a tough game on the road! We beat them once again without All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson, just like we did last year in the playoffs, only this time, they had Garnett, so there are no excuses. I know that the media loves Boston and Cleveland, but Orlando is the best team in the East, whether people like it or not...plain and simple! GO MAGIC!

For those that were not alive, or NBA fans in the 1950's, this game had to be what it was like back then. These teams couldn't win 40 games in the 70's. I know, I was alive and an NBA fan then.
Quit watching duringg Mikeys time in Chicago, because the teams during that era played the worst basketball in NBA history.

It took Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki & other foreign born players like Vlade, Peja, Gasol, * Yao to save the NBA that was once saved by Magic & Bird. When the aforementioned players hang em up, the NBA will revert to the Iverson, Kobiotch, Lebronze, D-Wade game of Selfish Ballhogs, just like Michael Jordon! YUK!

Fakers fans are a joke. You come on this board gloating about our loss. lol. Celts shoot very poor, Yet Orlando barely beat them 5 points! lol. How did Lakers do Against Denver ? or Dallas? a BLOWOUT. Once Again Lakers proved they can't beat A injured Rocket squad without the Refs bailout plan.. Fakers should be worrying about your inconsistent bench who are you going to trade for the deadline in Feb? Fakers are scared of the Rockets and Nuggets! You fakers are praying McGrady and Yao do not suit up. Fakers never could beat Aldermans team fair and Square without Stern Working his Magic. Remember the Sacramento Series Game 6? Face it Faker fans you cant beat a Healthy or DEPLETED Alderman squad without CHEATING.. .Rockets have your Number on the West. They show what you can Never buy and thats HEART. Fakers were embarssed on their homecourt The FAKER fans showed their true Colors By booing their Champs..FAKERS. How do you get outrebound 60-38 by undersize MEN?? ANY FAKER FAN ANSWER the question?? How come we you beat the Rockets in went into OVERTIME by 1point? Celtic Fans Know we always slap around the Fakers in the Finals.. How about that, 22yrs we were gone and we came back and we Destroyed The FAKERS..LMAO.

I didn't see the game but looking at the box score, it appears this was a case of Boston playing that bad (shooting % horrible) and not a case of Magic being that much better than the Celtics...However, a Win is a win no matter how bad/good you play.

Still think Celtics are the team to beat in the East...they just need to start hitting some 3's, and playing with a little more urgency...I know its early, but these losses come back to haunt you when home court is the key in the playoffs.

Fakers? I never heard that one before! (sarcasm). the Lakers will overtake the Celtics in titles in the next few years. Count on it. Then all we will be hearing is: The Minneapolis titles don't count. blah blah blah. Sour grapes for the Celtics.

You have won only one title since 86. You won't win another in another 20. The Lakers are about to pass you up.

At least we won't be hearing from Celtics fans about getting the record for most wins in a season now. Your team is too old and creaky. And you got a leprechan for a mascot. Whoop de whoop. Go Lakers!
