Ron Artest(notes) left the Houston Rockets to sign with a Los Angeles Lakers team he felt gave him the best chance to finally win a ring.

Houston, though, is now playing at a high level without Artest and two other superstars - and with former Laker Trevor Ariza(notes).

Artest returns to the Toyota Center on Wednesday night, when Los Angeles faces the Rockets for the first time since the teams’ seven-game series in last season’s Western Conference semifinals.

Acquired in a trade with Sacramento prior to 2008-09, Artest averaged 17.1 points and 5.2 rebounds as the Rockets went 53-29 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons.

Houston won Game 1 of the West semifinals in Los Angeles, but fell to the Lakers in seven.

“I thought it was a good learning experience for these guys,” Artest said following the Rockets’ 89-70 Game 7 defeat at Staples Center on May 17. “They’ve been through a Game 7. Most young teams get swept. That will really help the Rockets in the future.”

Artest, though, ultimately decided not to be a part of that future by signing a five-year, $33 million deal with the defending champion Lakers.

“This was a long time coming,” he said. “As I started to compete against the Lakers and against Kobe (Bryant), I had respect for him and I always wanted to be a teammate of his.”

Playing their first road game of the season Tuesday, the Lakers (3-1) defeated Oklahoma City 101-98 in overtime.

Artest scored a season-high 20 points, while Andrew Bynum(notes) posted his third double-double of the season with 22 and 10 boards. The star of the night, though, was Bryant, who had 31 points while battling flulike symptoms. The Lakers’ star hit the go-ahead jumper in overtime and a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining.

“When Kobe’s out there, he wants it,” Artest said. “That’s the great thing. He wants it. It’s not like I have to really go get it.”

Bryant averaged 28.3 points on 53.0 percent shooting as Los Angeles won all four regular-season matchups versus Houston in 2008-09.

Ariza, who scored 11.3 points per game and shot 47.6 percent from 3-point range during the Lakers’ 2008-09 playoff run, signed with Rockets in the offseason to help minimize the loss of Artest.

“I think (Houston is) the best place for me,” Ariza said over the summer. “I think I have more of an opportunity here.”

He’s making the most of that opportunity thus far, averaging a team-high 21.3 points.

Playing without Artest, Yao Ming(notes) - out for the season following foot surgery - and Tracy McGrady(notes) (microsurgery on left knee), the Rockets have won three straight since a 96-87 season-opening loss at Portland.

“When you lose your star players, people don’t expect very much from you but we’ve had the attitude that we’re going to play hard, compete and we’re going to see what we can do with this group,” coach Rick Adelman told the Rockets’ official Web site.

Adelman has started 6-foot-6 Chuck Hayes(notes) at center each game, but the undersized Rockets have compensated by shooting 44.8 percent from 3-point range.

“We have good shooters on this team, so we’re going to be really aggressive,” said Shane Battier(notes), who hit three of the Rockets’ 10 3-pointers in Monday’s 113-96 victory at Utah.

Ariza, Aaron Brooks(notes) and Chase Budinger(notes) each hit two from long range, and Budinger finished with a career-high 17 points.

The rookie also rolled his ankle in Monday’s victory, but is expected to be available Wednesday.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol(notes) worked out prior to Tuesday’s game, but has still not played this season due to a strained right hamstring.

As a die hard Laker fan I am still trying to figure out how these Rocket fans can fantasize about their team beating the Lakers in the playoffs. They will be lucky if they even make the playoffs. For this to happen Yao must remain injury free and McGrady must become unlazy. That is the only chance they have because their bench like most of the teams in the west are average at best. Our Lakers have one of the deepeswt benches in the entire west and therefore I don't see anyone touching them. Now if any Laker fans agree with me or Rocket fans disagreee you may email me at: owen.mosteller@yahoo.com and we can discuss or chat on messenger. Either way it would be fun and a way for this Floridian as of 1991 to make some friends in Texas and expecially California where I lived for 6 years.

If the Lakers are doing this damage to other teams and are short handed, just think how powerful they will be when they are back at full strength. They still have an awesome team and with the addition of Ron Artest they are even stronger. Just look at Cleveland who went out and got Shaq. Are they undefeated as they thought they would be? NO. Are they in first place in their division? NO. So what happened to them they were suppose to be the best in the East with Shaq to compliment Lebron? They don't have that necessary cohesiveness that a winning team must have. Now lets say Lebron gets hurt where do they go from there. Straight down to the bottom. The Lakers on the other hand are in much better shape because they have a much better bench and role players that can score from anywhere on the court. I have been following the Lakers since 1954 when they were in Minneapolis and had George Mikan as their true center and the best on around at that time. They won somewhere around 8 titles while there before moving to Los Angeles. Now everyone is talking about how great the Rockets are and they are nothing more than mere wanna be's in the West. If Yao isn't 100% then they have nothing or no one to replace him. It's a shame because the Lakers need a good team to push them to their limits and there really aren't any right now. Maybe somebody will make a late season push, but this fans isn't going to hold his breath. This is for Jamie: Kobe knows when to take over. All great players are not on every night they plaqy and then somebody has to pick up the slack for them. In the case of the Lakers if several guys aren't on then Kobe knows it is up to him to carry the load and only he can do it almost at will. How well does Lebron or the center from the Celtics. Can they do it almost everytime it is necessary? NO. So just sit back and watch the Lakers walk away with their division once again.

The Rockets played great the other night. That's to be expected from an Adelman coached team. They are always well prepared and play a solid team game. It took that to beat the Lakers playing at best their C+ game. Fun game to watch what with Artest and Ariza trading threes and glares. But frustrating to see the Lakers revert back to desperation mode when struggling against a team that out-hustles them. Lakers need to bring the energy, effort and consistent team play that made them the best in the league last year.

Of course it takes 41 points by Kobe to beat the injury depleted Rockets by ONE point. I am really looking forward to the day when the teams play each other and are both at full strength. Six players in double figures for the Rockets (almost seven), and only four for the Lakers. It is Kobe's world and the rest of the Lakers just stand around and watch him play in it. At least my team plays like a "team". Peace.

For a team that most of the critics predicted would be dead last in the West, the Rockets are playing pretty good. Maybe this is just what the NBA needs, a team with no marquee players that plays as a team. The no name Rockets may be the best thing to happen to the NBA in years.
