Will DeMarcus Cousins Ever Become a Dominant Player? Fan’s Take
DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings is one of the most frustrating players to watch in the NBA. As a longtime fan of the team, I question whether Cousins will ever be a dominating force in the league. He has shown enormous talent but has been equally frustrating for fans to watch at times. During the last week, Cousins has played outstanding basketball.
In his last six games, DeMarcus has had over 20 points in all but one game and over 11 rebounds in all but one game as well. He has also had four or more fouls in each game. This is what continues to worry me as a fan. For every great performance I see Cousins turn in, he struggles to be the truly dominant force he should be on both ends of the court.
Two stats of his are very disturbing for fans. Cousins is first in the NBA in fouls per game this season. He's currently averaging 4.1 fouls per game and is averaging 6.5 fouls per 48 minutes. This indicates that he is committing far too many fouls and is hurting his team in the process. DeMarcus is also second in the NBA in technical fouls on the season. Through 50 games he has 12 technical fouls and only trails Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins by one technical foul. These two statistics show a level of immaturity and reputation that surround Cousins on the court. Without changing this trend, Cousins will never become the dominant player he is capable of being.
At just 21 years old, I think fans should give Cousins some slack and let him continue to develop. Ever since the takeover of new head coach Keith Smart, Cousins has played noticeably better. His actions on the court will continue to leave doubt in players minds, but his play shows that he has all the potential to be one of the best centers in the game. Sacramento fans deserve to see their team succeed again and will need DeMarcus to thrive on the court for that to happen.
