Lakers Team Report

GETTING INSIDE

For all the attention that Mike D’Antoni’s “Seven Seconds or Less” up-tempo offense has gotten in recent years, the Lakers might well be bringing back the idea that big is beautiful.

The Lakers’ 60-36 rebounding advantage over D’Antoni’s New York Knicks on Tuesday was a stark reflection of how size can matter in basketball. The Lakers did commit 25 turnovers, but they won easily by shooting far more accurately from close range while the Knicks fired away from afar.

“Probably the biggest thing is that they are good,” D’Antoni said of the Lakers. “They had a lot of length on us, and the only way we are going to be able to beat them is if we made some jumpshots—and we just did not make them.

“When you are shooting 38 percent, they are going to get a lot more rebounds. And when you play with three 7-footers (Andrew Bynum(notes), Pau Gasol(notes) and 6-foot-10 Lamar Odom(notes)), you are going to get a lot more rebounds, too.”

Bynum had eight rebounds, Gasol 16 and Odom 12 against New York. Ron Artest(notes) had seven, too.

The Lakers’ size made it nearly impossible for New York to work out any offense near the rim. Said Knicks forward Wilson Chandler(notes): “They pushed our offense back a little farther than we usually do.”

Lakers 100, Knicks 90:   Kobe Bryant(notes) was plus-25—meaning the Lakers outscored the Knicks by 25 points when he was on the court but got outscored by 15 points when he wasn’t. Bryant had 34 points on 14-of-20 shooting.

NOTES, QUOTES

• G Kobe Bryant was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season (Nov. 16-22), but it was the 25th such honor of his career. That ties Michael Jordan’s total, although most of Jordan’s nods were leaguewide and not conference specific.

• C Andrew Bynum, G Jordan Farmar(notes) and F Pau Gasol played host to military families and veterans, and helped serve a Thanksgiving dinner. Earlier this season, Shannon Brown(notes) and Josh Powell(notes) volunteered to help assemble holiday care packages for U.S. troops.

Quote To Note:   “You don’t see that anywhere else but L.A.”—Kobe Bryant on a fourth-quarter mini-concert by the Black Eyed Peas breaking out during a timeout Sunday at Staples Center, which is next door to Nokia Theatre (where the American Music Awards took place the same night).

ROSTER REPORT

Rotation:   Starters—Point guard Derek Fisher(notes), Shooting guard Kobe Bryant, Small forward Ron Artest, Power forward Pau Gasol, Center Andrew Bynum. Bench—Forward Lamar Odom, Guard Jordan Farmar, Guard Sasha Vujacic(notes), Guard Shannon Brown, Forward Josh Powell, Forward Adam Morrison(notes), Center DJ Mbenga(notes).

Player Notes:

• G Shannon Brown is going to be promoted by the Lakers with a Web site to campaign for his invitation to the NBA All-Star dunk contest.

• F Ron Artest appeared with “Jimmy Kimmel Live” cut into his hair when he did a guest spot on the show Monday night.

• F Pau Gasol said he wasn’t completely satisfied with his second game back from his hamstring injury after being pleasantly surprised by his effectiveness in his debut. But Gasol looked smoother in Game 3 with 11 points and 16 rebounds against New York.

Medical Watch:

• F Luke Walton(notes) (pinched nerve in back) is out at least until the end of December.

laker haters, or should i say kobe haters. Everybody want to hate kobe, but don't hate kobe hate the game. Everybody say 's lebron, but until he wins a championship i got wade above lebron james. And defintely kobe bryant is better, he's more focused and less selfish when it comes to the team. lebron thou he is a distributor of the ball, yet he is still looking for the limelight instead the team getting the limelight. he still got a lot to learn. he got to get the mental part of the game like wade and kobe have already got that part down. His jump shot is still shottyy, his turnover comes at a crucial time in key games. He's good but not great yet. but i expect him to be the best player in the league probably within the next 3 years, For now it's kobe bryant and dwayne wade. lakers champions 2010

Why are you people still insisting that we sign Iverson? he is a freakin cancer and we dont need him here in L.A....He will be crying like a little @#$% that he is and dont need his drama. He is a great player, but he doesnt fit in with the triangle offense...Would be nice to get Ariza back though....Sounds good, but doubt that would happen...Image him coming off the bench to replacew Artest or have Artest, Ariza and Kobe on the court at the same time...WOW!!!!

When people say that the Lakers suck, it's sounds more like you hate the Lakers rather then true facts. They will lose in the playoffs? To who? Hate them but remember that the Lakers are the defendind champs and they are playing really good basketball right now. Think before you speak.

The Lakers are a joke and they will lose in the playoffs. Kobe is good (Never in the same cat. as MJ or Magic or Larry Bird) but his ego will get in the way.

I agree with you GregS, Lakers need a real good point guard, Adam Morrison should have waived before the start of this season. I have watched the guy from then 2nd round draft, he is a lot better player than him, the reason they are winning without Pau Gasol is because of Kobe, I really can't remember Kobe's been this good from any past yrs, he's been shooting the lights out for the last 3 games.

The Lakers bench is there only weak spot... it's not good... and to blake you can't be watching there games... Farmar, Brown have done absolutely nothing... Powell is playing better but hasn't done that much Mbenga is just a Ben Wallace type player... Walton garbage... Orlando and Boston by far have a great advantage in the bench dept... i like the Hawks bench over Lakers... Crawford for starters, no one on the Lakers bench is even in the same league with Crawford.... I like Dallas bench also ... Barea is turing into a nice PG back up, Terry best 6th man and now Gooden and Q Ross. Lakers bench is horrid right now. When Gasol gets back you'll be able to say Odom on the bench but for now there is nobody on the bench!

I saw someone who was talking about Kobe saying Havlicek is better. I noticed his facts were way off. Let me put my input:

    4× NBA Champion
    (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009)
    NBA Finals MVP
    (2009)
    NBA Most Valuable Player
    (2008
    11× NBA All-Star
    (1998, 2000–2009)
    2× NBA Scoring Champion
    (2006–2007)
    7× All-NBA First Team
    (2002–2004, 2006–2009)
    2× All-NBA Second Team
    (2000–2001)
    2× All-NBA Third Team
    (1999, 2005)
    7× All-Defensive First Team
    (2000, 2003–2004, 2006–2009)
    2× All-Defensive Second Team
    (2001–2002)
    NBA All-Rookie Second Team
    (1997)
    3× NBA All-Star Game MVP
    (2002, 2007,2009)
    NBA Slam Dunk Champion
    (1997)
Naismith Prep Player of the Year
    (1996)
    Olympic Gold medal
    (2008)

    John Havlicek:

    8× NBA Champion (1963–1969, 1974, 1976)
    1× NBA Finals MVP (1974)
    13× NBA All Star (1966–1978)
    NBA 35th Anniversary Team
    NBA 50th Anniversary Team
    1962 NBA All-Rookie Team
    4× All-NBA First Team (1971–1974)
    7× All-NBA Second Team (1964–1970, 1975–1976)
    5× NBA All-Defensive First Team
    3× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1969–1971)

Havlicek got him championships but by the end of Kobe's career, he will be considered one of the best ever as he is right now.

Lets remember that 6 of Havlicek's 8 championships had hall of famers from top to bottom. Kobe only had Shaq and the one last season only Gasol would be considered great even though I think Gasol is very important, I don't know if he's great yet.

Hate Kobe but don't be stupid. Respect his game. He can't help it that he's great. People who hate on Kobe always said before he won this last championship that he couldn't win without Shaq and until he actually won on his own he's not a great champion. He won without Shaq and people still say non sense. I guess Kobe will always have haters no matter what he does. There are many people that say Lebron is better then Kobe. The Cavs had the best record in the league last season and were victims of a 5 game sweep at the hands of Orlando. The Lakers beat Orlando in 5. Lebron is really good but this is Kobe's world.

I think Houston have the best bench in the NBA, except without a center, but they are still playing great, just check out their box score and see.

Blake B, are you kidding me?

The Lakers have a better bench than most starting 5's, hopefully you were exaggerating... A LOT.
The Magic have a deeper bench and probably the Celtics, Spurs, and Blazers.

It's a deep bench, but I think they are hamstrung by the triangle. They used to come in and run the other teams reserves off the court. The last time they really did their thing was a game in 2008 against the Spurs, when they took an 8 point 3rd quarter lead and ran it up to over 30 in the 4th. Remember when Kobe & Co. would sit out the 4th quarters of games? Yes, they need to play with structure and discipline-Jackson wouldn't tolerate less. But they also need to let loose and run, and take advantage of mismatches. I see them as thinking out there and not playing. If Morrison can find his shot and help spread the court, there would be less pressure on "The Machine," and more room for Brown to drive. I just thought they were pressing, and had a bit of a hangover from the playoffs on Tuesday. We'll see how they look against Dallas, whose bench is not as deep, but they are athletic.

    Two notes:

One-Shaq in Cleveland may be one of the biggest blunders ever. Brown's going to lose his job over that. Didn't they see what he did to the Suns? They WERE a running team, weren't they?

Two-There were only 9 teams in the NBA when Havlicek played-they had all the talent outside the Lakers. In fact, they also benefited from the dilution of talent when the NBA added 5 teams from 1966-68. Red was notorious for giving up the worst players for the expansion drafts.

Adam Morrison sucks, they should have let the guy of 2nd round draft pick stay instead, their bench is lousy, they will have a hard time repeat as NBA Champ.
