Red-hot Carmelo gets fast start in Race to the MVP

Had the initial Race to the MVP column been written a week ago, after only a handful of games, the list would have been infiltrated by the likes of Channing Frye(notes), who hit six three-pointers en route to 22 points in one of the Phoenix Suns' early victories, and Al Horford(notes), who had 24 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks in the Atlanta Hawks' season-opening victory over the Indiana Pacers.

No offense to Mssrs. Frye and Horford, but as it is, time (and subsequently more games) tends to even things out, players ease into their natural roles and, as always, the best talent begins to stand out as it usually does.

Nevertheless, it does not necessarily mean there are no neck-whipping surprises when it comes to the year's first Race. That's right, this is not a sycophantic respite for LeBron-Kobe worship. No, we enjoy the occasional fried okra thrown in with our T-Bone, just to mix up the flavor.

Oh, we realize that at some point in the season, The Race is likely to fawn all over the two best players in the league, bowing to their theatrical excellence like so many whimsical worshippers before us. Hell, it's likely to happen over the course of the final 10 weeks of the regular season—at which point we'll conveniently forget this column was ever written.

Which makes this first entry in The Race so refreshing, so downright uplifting. After all, how can The Race even acknowledge the reigning MVP while he is wasting away on a middling club struggling to find an identity? How can the reigning MVP be considered a frontrunner when he fumbles the potential game-winning shot against Chicago out of bounds—after expertly channeling the Patrick Ewing four-step drive to the basket, no less?

There are so many other candidates out there, and The Race for one believes that the MVP should come from a winning team, and of being among teams that possess the best records in the league.

Sure, I have a soft spot for Cortez Kennedy being named the 1992 NFL Defensive Player of the Year on a 2-14 Seattle Seahawks team.

But this ain't the NFL. This is hardcore.

The Race likes undefeated. The Race likes one-loss teams. The Race doesn't want to hear excuses about 330-pound centers clogging up the middle. We've heard that one before. There are too many other compelling stories. Beginning in Denver, where even an early blizzard has not been able to cool off Carmelo Anthony(notes).

1. Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets (5-1)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%

So let's see, through his first six games, 'Melo has already eclipsed the 40-point barrier twice, going for 41 in a victory at Portland and 42 a few nights later against Memphis. He is averaging 32 points a game, shooting 41.2 percent from 3-point range and is averaging only 2.5 turnovers a game despite playing more than 35 minutes per. He was named the Western Conference Player of the Week and, following his impressive postseason performance last year, appears to be the pre-eminent player in line behind Kobe Bryant(notes) and LeBron James(notes). And right now, he has a better record than LeBron.

2. Paul Pierce(notes), Celtics (6-1)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
7 35.0 19.1 5.7 3.7 1.1 0.3 .500 .516 .857
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
Granted, Pierce's numbers are not gaudy. He is averaging 19.1 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. But we have two arguments there. Steve Nash's(notes) stats were not obscene when he won those MVP awards in Phoenix. And Pierce routinely has to share the ball with Ray Allen(notes) and Kevin Garnett(notes), which inherently means his numbers will be deflated, while Kobe's are always going to be up because the makeup of his team is altogether different. But shouldn't the best player on the best team get some consideration for national recognition beyond just the numbers? We think so.

3. Kobe Bryant, Lakers (5-1)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
6 40.2 34.5 6.3 2.8 2.8 0.3 .481 .231 .831
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
How long will Bryant be on the outside looking in at the top spots in this race? Seemingly not for long. The championship last season seems not to have quenched his thirst for a repeat, but only whetted his appetite. He currently is leading the league in scoring, with 34.5 points a game. He's getting 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He is winning games at the end, as he did in Houston the other night. And, perhaps most important, he is getting along with Ron Artest(notes)—or at least tolerating him.

4. Dwyane Wade(notes), Heat (5-1)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
6 38.2 28.0 4.0 4.8 1.7 0.6 .446 .182 .778
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
Wade is about as impressive as they come, primarily because he does not seem to have a massive amount of talent around him and he still is able to put up huge numbers. He outdueled Gilbert Arenas(notes) for 40 points on Wednesday night and has not scored less than 22 in a game. He got a great test this week, when he won a Race Face against Carmelo Anthony on Friday. Meetings with Arenas and then LeBron follow next week.

5. Dwight Howard(notes), Magic (5-1)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
6 30.2 20.0 11.8 1.2 0.7 2.0 .678 .000 .690
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
He is incorporating Vince Carter(notes) into his rotation, is missing Rashard Lewis(notes) due to suspension and still is developing his low-post game. And yet Howard still manages to absolutely dominate. It helps, of course, to have shoulders that make El Capitan jealous. But the guy is going for 19.6 points, 11.8 rebounds and two blocks – and is still learning how to play the game at this level. Scary. By the way, in Wednesday's 122-100 victory over Phoenix, he had 25 points in 23 minutes.

6. Steve Nash, Suns (5-1)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
6 34.2 19.0 3.0 11.0 0.2 0.2 .519 .536 .882
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
The question always looms: Who means more to the Suns, Nash or Amar'e Stoudemire(notes)? I have to go with the Canuck because he both finishes and creates for Phoenix, while Stoudemire mostly finishes. Nash has a Suns team that has a nice starting five but falls off after that off to a 5-1 start. For that he gets early consideration.

7. Joe Johnson(notes), Hawks (4-2)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
6 36.7 21.2 5.5 4.0 1.0 0.2 .453 .231 .893
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
Johnson is routinely filling the stat sheet, averaging 21.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists. He has the stacked Hawks off to a 4-2 start and seemingly headed back to the playoffs. Yes, he has a very nice team around him. But he is the dominant player on that team and regularly takes over games. Just imagine if he was still playing alongside Nash.

8. Trevor Ariza(notes), Rockets (4-2)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
6 39.0 20.2 4.5 4.0 1.3 0.3 .420 .459 .741
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
Admittedly this is a sentimental pick that likely will be out of the running next week. But The Race is absolutely flummoxed that the Rockets have four victories so far; it seemed a lock that they would be 1-5 or 0-6 at this point. But Ariza has more than done his share to carry a very average team to wins over Portland, Utah and Golden State, averaging 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists. This after being considered a defensive stalwart while performing in Kobe's immense shadow. Hats off.

9. Chris Bosh(notes), Raptors (3-2)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
5 36.6 29.0 11.8 2.0 0.6 1.0 .531 1.00 .724
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
Seriously, Darko Milicic(notes) over this guy? C'mon. How good has Bosh become? The guy is averaging 29 points and 11.8 rebounds. He is shooting 53 percent. He is getting to the line in excess of 15 times a game. His efficiency rating is off the charts. He has his team winning occasionally. What more can he do to earn a rather lucrative free-agent contract?

10. LeBron James, Cavaliers (4-3)
G MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
7 37.9 26.3 7.7 8.0 1.7 0.9 .517 .364 .716
Last Week: N/A | Drafted:
You didn't really think The Race was going to leave the King out, did you? With apologies to Ben Gordon(notes), Dirk Nowitzki(notes) and Tim Duncan(notes), James clearly is among the best players in the NBA, though his team is not playing very well right now. That hardly seems to be James' fault; he is averaging 26.3 points, 8.0 assists and 7.7 rebounds – though he can't seem to find a way early on to mesh with Shaquille O'Neal(notes). Have no fear, The Race knows it's only a matter of time before James crawls his way up the standings and will be standing beside Kobe and perhaps Carmelo in the end. But this is the first week. Strange occurrences happen early on.

The anti-MVPS

Unlike the 10 guys mentioned above, these players are the ones who don't quite embody that MVP spirit:

Baron Davis(notes) – He was supposed to lead his team to resurgence. Instead, he is averaging 13.7 points, shooting 38.8 percent and the Clippers are the Clippers at 2-4.

Stephen Jackson(notes) – He says he is as good as Kobe and wants to be traded to a winner. Yet he looks disinterested and the Warriors are just 1-3. Not exactly prime trade bait.

Allen Iverson(notes) – He said he thought the Grizzlies had championship aspirations. Now he is in a verbal battle with coach Lionel Hollins over playing time – after only six games. And Memphis has fallen to 1-5 with things sure to get worse before they get better.

    JR

I know what CP3 is doing. The Hornets are 2-4. If Terry & Barea hadn't missed 4FT in the last 20 seconds, the Hornets would be 1-5. How valuable can CP3 be?

Lets compare the combined shooting % of the Top NBA players. Nash= 193.7, Melo= 170.3,
Dirk= 169.3, Lebronze= 159.7, Kobiotch=154.3, D-Wade=140.6. Howard & Bosh don't count because they CAN NOT shoot the 3, and are terrible FT shooters.

Nash leads this group in assists, & has 4 times as many assists as Kobiotch. Nowitzki leads the top 6 in rebounds and blocked shots.

Nash won two MVP's & Dirk won one ( should have been two) because they are that Dam GOOD.
Racisim had nothing to do with it. Do you hear that Barkley, Kenny, Steven A., C-Webb, David Aldrich,
Dan Lebretard, and all the other race card playing, race baiting, foreign born player haters?

Nash has shot 50% from the floor, 40% on 3's, & 90% from the line in 3 of the last 4 seasons, and is going to do it again this season. Larry Bird did it twice, no other player has done it more than once.
Dirk has done it. Kobiotch, Lebronze, D-Wade, Melo, etc. have never done it & never will. Selfish ballhogs & certified bricklayers don't shoot 50-40-90%. Real MVP's do!

To think Kobe behind Pierce is a joke.. Pierce, my God! He is nothing if Allen and Garnet (and even Wallace) were without him in the Celtics!

Top three so far For MVP.... are
    1. Steve Nash (almost 20 points 11 assist a game the real reason is though no one thought the Suns would be 5-1 at this point ...dude is phat)
    2. Chris Bosh are u kidding me almost 30 points and 12 rebounds a game need i say more dude doesn't get the respect he deserves.
3 Carmelo-numbers are good but i have watched three games that denver has played w/o him they could very well be 2-4 he is carrying the team and he is gonna do it the whole season i have a felling he will win mvp this yr......
.......Peter Dude i have watched all but one of la game and Kobe is not the mvp he isnt even in the top 5 ...... the Defense of artest and bynum has saved them from two overtime loses w/o artest and bynum kobe would have never even had the chance to lead them to victory which is another reason his numbers are higher then others he has played a extra 10 mins more then everyone else on the list.... im not a kobe hater in fact im far from it but its obvious that u are a lover of his saying that he is above and beyond number 1 right now watch some games other then the lakers then u can talk SON!

Pretty close margin, but Kobe should be 1 and Melo 2.

I would take out both Ariza Joe Johnson and slide in Dirk Cp3. I like what Ariza is doing, carrying the Rockets to wins, but what the hell do you think Dirk and CP3 are doing?

Pierce should not be 2nd - that makes no sense. Since when did Boston became the best team? That had changed since Lakers won the finals, and several other teams powered up.

All I gotta say is anyone with any basketball IQ and not a Kobe hater would put Kobe at #1 right now. The man is the best player on the planet and carrying Lakers to multiple wins without the second best player and.or third best on the team. When KG went out last year what happened to Pierce? Thats right, he didnt step up.

There is no doubt my mnd that Kobe is way ahead of the pack right now. 34.5pts a game. I havent seen those numbers since the 80s. Kobe is the only one aside from Jordan and Wilt to be able to put up those kind of numbers. Kobe does not get the recognition he should get. Also anyone that knows the game knows Kobe is the best all around player and not Lebron. Charles Barkely is a dumbnut (I am dead serious that this guy is a moron) and Lebron balls hugger. He just mad because Kobe said he needd 3 games to score the amount of points Kobe can score in 1. Thats right. 81 baby. He is also jelous Kobes got 4 rings and he got the big fat ZERO.
