Lakers’ Gasol frustrated by hamstring recovery

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Lakers forward Pau Gasol(notes) is getting frustrated by the slow pace of his recovery from a strained right hamstring after missing his third straight game Sunday night.

Gasol has been out of action for three weeks since injuring his leg early in the defending NBA champions’ preseason schedule. He didn’t suit up for Los Angeles’ game against Atlanta, putting Lamar Odom(notes) in the starting lineup again.

“We’ve done all the right treatment and rehab, and now we’ve just got to be patient,” Gasol said. “It’s not going away, and it was hard for a few days. I didn’t expect it to be this way, but we’re doing what we have to do.”

The Spanish forward missed just one regular-season game last year and was the Lakers’ second-leading scorer while averaging 18.9 points, a team-leading 9.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

He wonders whether his extensive offseason schedule with his national team over the past two summers contributed to muscle fatigue that led to the injury.

“It’s a couple of years that I’ve put my body through a lot of work, so maybe that has something to do with it,” Gasol said. “Or maybe it’s just a one-time thing.”

The Lakers haven’t decided when Gasol will return, but he plans to make their upcoming road trip to Oklahoma City and Houston. Coach Phil Jackson doesn’t mind if Gasol sits out both games, but he expects his starting power forward to be back fairly soon.

“It’s not something where you have to be (100 percent),” Jackson said. “You can’t be 100 percent on this unless you take forever and ever to let it heal. … His initial diagnosis was that it takes six weeks for a hamstring to heal. We don’t have six weeks. We just have to figure it out, and there are ways to come through this without having to jeopardize him.”

Lakers could even win a championship WITHOUT Bryant AND Gasol.

    Thats a fact.

Any team with Odom, Artest, Fisher, P Jackson and the bench mob is a contender.

boston beware, you will be embarassed in June.

We just need to rest Pau for another 3 weeks and we should be fine.

They will be fine without gasol a couple of years ago they didnt have gasol and they had the best record in the west before they traded for him. They just need to rebuild the chemistry which I think they are getting close to doing.

Thomas P is right. Lakers coaches and medical staff need to be couseling patience. It's a hamstring. Don't rush back. Heal up now. Be healthy for the playoff run. Lakers #1 again in 2010 !

The Lakers should win 2 out of every 3 without Gasol playing, so no ground will be lost if he takes all the time he needs to heal completely. Coming back to play is less important than coming back 100%

Yes Phil, respectfully, I disagree you do have six weeks to get Gasol healthy. In fact for many of these up coming games at the first third of the season, I would play increased minutes for the second stringers to save wear and tear on Kobe, Derek and others. It allows the bench to devolop and gain experience while resting your best team who all play almost a hundred games a season including playoff, and preseason.

And by now its already been what three weeks or so of him being hampered so what's a few more weeks or a month more? This layoff also helps Gasol get that rest he should have had during the off season so he can be back 100% and not have to risk really reinjuring himself for much longer or have it linger all season or compensate and then have him injure something else, like a back or knee that could lead to ongoing problems.

I agree wholeheartedly that the off-season play should be banned. of course, this is the reason gasol cannot play, and may not play for some time. i just knew this would happen.
i don't blame him for putting his heart and soul into his country, but afterall.....what about his day job here. they miss him already, and god forbid someone else gets hurt.
please nba bosses.....make it a rule....no more off season committments!!!!!!!!!!!

look at what lamar odom did tonight as a starter. lakers are a deep team and they should let gasol sit out until he is 100% ready to go. if gasol played though the lakers would not have lost to the mavericks. odom is too good to be a bench player and artest suckin it up so far they should switch roles and have artest come off the bench as a 6th man if he cant find his shot

If Gasol is out, the Lakers may struggle a bit until they get used to playing without him. If Bynum can stay healthy (okay, big if), then they will eventually be even better than they were with Gasol. Bynum is more talented defensively and probably about even on the offensive side of the ball. Problem is, every time Bynum really gets to rolling, he gets hurt.
