Jackson likes LeBron’s call to retire Jordan’s 23

DENVER (AP)—Phil Jackson likes LeBron James’(notes) idea of NBA players giving up No. 23 to honor Michael Jordan.

The Los Angeles Lakers coach who won six titles with Jordan in Chicago compared the idea to the NHL’s retirement of No. 99 to honor hockey great Wayne Gretzky in 2000.

Jackson said Jordan changed the NBA much as Gretzky did hockey.

Asked about the issue before his Los Angeles Lakers played the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, Jackson said the only potential pitfall he sees with retiring No. 23 league-wide is it might be “a little step on the toes for a guy like Magic (Johnson) or (Larry) Bird.”

Lebronze is a total IDIOT! He thinks the NBA started with Jordan, like many other ignorant kids. Let's just outlaw the number 23 for every sport. Anyone caught wearing number 23 gets to spend the rest of their life "in ze cooler" for such a travesty and a crime by insulting the number one ball hog of the NBA...Michael Jordan of the Chicago Jordans! In fact, it will soon be illegal to randomly shout Michael Jordan's name in public, unless your name is Marv Albert....only he is allowed to yell "MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!!" at any time for every reason like he loved to do on TNT.

What a load of crock. Before #23 gets retired, retire Chamberlain's #13, and Magic's, and Kareem's, and Oscar Robertson's, and Karl Malone's.

Give me a break, will you? Or, rather, give Lebron a break.

Nobody is saying you have to like him, or root for him. But man, no matter what this kid does, people are all over it.

Even if he has an ego, so what? I think that is a pre-req just to play in that league. Or any other pro league for that matter.

He does everything pretty much spot on, stays out of trouble and just cause he doesn't play for your team you gotta tear every move he makes apart.

He's a big boy, with lots of money. I don't need to feel sorry for him. But I kinda feel sorry for some of you chumps, especially you guys hanging from Kobe's privates who constantly berate him. It was funny to see how the same people who rip him started getting starry eyed when the rumor circulated last week about Bron and Kobe playin together. Showed your true colors!

I personnally thought he should have chosen a more distinct number than 23 since he came out of high school but in the end it's not a big deal. I mean, let's face it; if you try to retire the number of every legend, you will have to start putting 3 or 4 numbers on each players back in order to accomodate them all.

Let the kid play and just enjoy a great era of NBA basketball. Did anyone watch Bron and D wade the other night. the NBA is in good hands as Kobe grows into the twilight of his talented career.

Nothing more needs to be said, but I'm sure you'll still feel the need to say it.

This is one of the few times I think Phil is wrong. There are two things wrong with this situation:

    1. This isn't about Michael, this is about LeBron's ego and lack of historical perspective. Not to mention trying to steal some spotlight from D. Wade wearing MJ's special new kicks.

    2. Michael is the greatest marketed player, not NBA player. The NBA is about teams. Some players just contribute more than others.

Let the jersey hang in the United Center and Hall of Fame and let it go already!

The hidden reason why LBJ would like to retire #23 is his ego. #23 will always be remembered as MJ and not LBJ. LeBron knows that his greatness will be in the shadows of MJ if he continue to wear #23. Therefore, this idea is only LeBron's scapegoat to switch to a new jersey number so people would remember LeBron's greatness out of MJ's shadow.

i dont think people give Magic enough thought when they talk about greatest of all time. he revived and revolutionized the game and was as much a winner as jordan, 5 titles and 3mvp's. when it comes down to it, this is a TEAM sport, where you dont just win titles by yourself. he was the ultimate team player, racking up points, rebounds AND 12 assists per game, making role players look like all-stars. and he accomplished an incredible amount of stuff even though his career was cut short.

i dont think people remember that he had just gone to the finals for the 9th time the year before he suddenly retired at 32 years old.

could he have won a few more? is that what it wouldve took for people to put him in the same sentence as michael jordan? probably. if you're gonna talk about retiring jordans number, you better think long and hard about retiring number 32 first.

Instead of retiring his number league wide it would be better to update the league logo to Jordan's logo. That would be more of an honor in my opinion. Sorry to Jerry West.

Of course Phil would like to see 23 retired league-wide, but it should only be the Bulls. He mentioned Bird, and retiring number 33 in his honor would also be a little step on the toes of another 33, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It could go on and on.
