Shaq tops 28,000 career points

CLEVELAND (AP)—Cavaliers center Shaquille O’Neal(notes) has become the fifth player in NBA history to score 28,000 points.

With his first basket Tuesday night, a layup in the lane in the opening minute against Toronto, O’Neal joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928), Michael Jordan (32,292) and Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) as the only players to reach the milestone.

O’Neal, who is in his first season with Cleveland, was saluted by the crowd during a timeout in the first quarter.

Congrats to Oneal, brilliant career, nothing came easy for the guy, each of those points were "earned" and if dude shot at least 65%-70% from the strike, he would have 30+ thousand already.
Remember yall, we are watching a living legend, a living, breathing piece of NBA history each time he is on the hardwood, for all of you haters out there before you go dissing Oneal and calling him names and teasing the big fella because of his age, "numbers never lie" he is a proven entity.
I been a long time fan of his since his LSU days, i do not even know how many times one of his dunks made me jump out my seat and shout, unstoppable force in the middle, hilarious guy, entertainer, philanthropist, all around great for this game.....say what you want, but we will never see another like him.

CONGRATS SHAQ! WILT IS NEXT! #4 AND CLIMBING!!!!

It's a shame how David Stern has SCREWED UP the NBA!! Under the David Stern era, the Center has lost importance, and thus, today's fans believe that a center is NOT IMPORTANT or NECESSARY in order for clubs to win ballgames and championships in the NBA!! Reducing the importance of the Center in the NBA, is akin to REDUCING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SUN IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM!!

EVERYTHING REVOLVES AROUND THE SUN, and in the NBA EVERYTHING REVOLVES AROUND THE PIVOT/CENTER!!! It was STERN'S MOTHERING OF Michael Jordan, not allowing Jordan to be fouled/touched in games, that RUINED the importance of the Center in the NBA!!

Jordan HAD FREE REIGN TO DO WHATEVER HE FELT LIKE DOING, and the Bulls was able to win games, and Championships WITHOUT A STAR PIVOT/CENTER!!! How many clubs have had the success that the Bulls had SINCE JORDAN RETIRED?? Even the Lakers had to go get Gasol who is a CENTER playing FORWARD!!! Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, Rasheed Wallace; and a few others, ARE CENTERS PLAYING FOWARD!! Guys like Ben Wallace, Amare Stoudamire, Kevin Garnett; and a few others, ARE FORWARDS PLAYING AS CENTERS!!

There isn't one Forward/Center in today's game, who could DO ANYTHING WITH THE CENTERS OF YESTERDAY: Bil Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Willis Reed, Abdul-Jabbar, Wes Unseld, Pat Ewing; Hakeem Olajuwon, Moses Malone, Brad Daugherty; Artis Gilmore, Nate Thurmond, Connie Hawkins; Zelmo Beaty, Bob Lanier, Walt Bellamy; Marvin Webster, Dave Cowens, Robert Parish; David Robinson!!! When you look at it closer, yes, Shaquille is the 5th highest scoring player in the history of the NBA; yet, he is the 3rd highest scoring CENTER in the HISTORY OF THE NBA behind Kareem Adul-Jabbar, and Wilt Chamberlain!!!

Shaquille O'Neal is the 3rd greatest Center in the HISTORY of the NBA in terms of Championships won!!! Bill Russell has 11, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has 6, and Shaquille O'Neal has 4!! David Stern HAS RUINED Basketball in the NBA!!! The MOST IMPORTANT PEICE on the FLOOR, HAS NO CREDENCE IN Today's NBA!!!

David Stern is little more than a CARNIVAL BARKER impersonating an NBA Commissioner!!! He should be in PRISON for fixing/tampering with games, players, and referees; maligning superstars careers, and influencing clubs to play OR NOT PLAY ESTABLISHED STARS in the NBA!!!

Hey, a lot of athletes hang around to long, and Shaq may be one of them, but you have to give the guy Kudos on the accomplishment, that's some rare air to be part of. Only 5 guys, count'em, only 5 have scored more then 28,000 points in the history of the NBA. I'm not a big Shaq fan, but quit dogging the guy, that's a hell of an accomplishment no matter how you slice it! He's definitely below Wilt and Kareem as all time centers, but you could make an argument for 3rd, 4th.

Man this just shows how many of you DOUCHE BAGS actually know anything about the game. First last year he carried the SUNS period.. Stoudemire went down Hill was in and out of line up they had a real idiotic trade for Richardson 2 coaches. And he averaged what 17 points?? And all this Kobe Shaq BS is old it took the Lakers putting together a complete team for them to get a ring Shaq went to Miami a team just building and won a Title. Yeah D Wade was there Haslem but come on that is no way close to what the Lakers have. If you have to send a constant double team it opens the floor. Shaq brings that kind of respect every game just look at the Orlando game. Howard one of the best centers in the NBA had help all night long. Can you picture watching Jordan or Kobe with a constant double team almost every time they touch the ball????? Teams came up with defenses like HACK A SHAQ oh and the Zone was brought back after Title number 2. Get real people you might not like him but you gotta respect what he does!!!!!! And for the Lakers fans that take such issue with Shaq he brought you 3 count them 3 Championships but you guys are still pissed cause he proved he could win another with out the Lakers .

Kobe 7 for 24 big deal, he has a broken finger. Most people won't even play with a broken finger yet hes out there giving it his all. And Shaq avg like 17/8 last year. Shaq just trys to fit in and play a role for the team to win games. Upper 30s in the NBA is tough, the physical pounding on the body and this man is still in the top 5-6 of centers in the league.

It's not the issue whether the Cavs play better with or without Shaq full time.

The issue is that he's NOT a full time player at this point in his career and they clearly DON'T play better with him coming in and out of the lineup and having to constantly switch styles a s a result.

jaymee, you're the idiot. Alvin Gentry has already said that Shaq did everything they asked him to do and they are not necessarily better without him. The Suns won 46 games last season, despite changing head coaches TWICE, changing playing style, and losing their franchise player-Amare Stoudemire.

Now, any short-sighted, and obnoxious Shaq-hater will blame Shaq for the Suns not reaching the playoffs last season, but it was not his fault.

BTW, i will not engage you in a flame war, I am much too busy for that. I have said everything I have to say, and that is that. Alvin Gentry (Suns headcoach) do not blame Shaq, and that is worth far more than any Shaq hater's stupid opinion regarding the matter.

Oh Man!!! Give the guy a break! He was injured! Remember last year when Amare Stoudemire got poked to the eye, he was out for the season. It's potentially dangerous! I can't believe all the immature and thoughtless comments on this message board.

"diesel broken down"? "retire before he embarasses himself further"? No doubt these are from the ingrates Lakers (Shaq gave them 3 titles, not kobe, Shaq! ) and Miami (Shaq helped Wade give them their ONLY title) fans. How does he embarass himself, actually? By being consistent, and despite limited touches and playing time, are still getting double-doubles? By scoring more than the other average (even young ones) centers? By commanding double teams? Even at 37 years old, he is still one of the better centers in the league.

Talk about embarassment, check out Kobe's 7 out of 24 shots (29% FG) in the Lakers' loss. That's embarassing, shooting and shooting bricks, forcing shots, just to keep up his scoring average. Shaq on the other hand has taken the high road, and is re-inventing himself, even with less ball touches.

rsxdaddy......do you realize just how much money they will have available without shaq's or lebron's overblown salaries??? if i were the cavs i'd rest easy no matter which way it goes. shaq was a has-been with the suns and he cavs didn't really want any part of him anyway. they got him to appease lebron, who's going anyway after the season. -shrug- lebron is getting like t.o. is to football......unbearably obnoxious. he's gonna be a cancer to the team down the line if he isn't starting already. just no one has the huevos to speak up now about his showboating. wait till he leaves and starts badmouthing the organization and the city. they're better off with 3 above average players to share the load.

shaq is a just a has-been and you're an idiot, cooper. smell the coffee already. you ARE right that he's a distraction though.....TO the cavs, not for them. just like he was TO the suns who dumped him. and rightly so. other than lebron, cleveland has a history of picking up has-beens on the cheap to try to wring one more year out of them. you think they would have signed shaq if lebron hadn't been here? of course not. they didn't want any part of the guy. an experiment gone wrong. admit it. the suns did.
